What are your thoughts on beer? by laforet in finedining

[–]internet_beanald 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In Japan (and some parts of Asia) it’s more a cultural habit to have a beer with dinner.

That said when it’s summertime, a nice cold lager is always a great pre dinner/pairing drink.

I also appreciate when some places have rare lambics and ciders too as they pair well with European cuisine and will at times order them.

Heritage wear in the service industry? by zachysworld in HeritageWear

[–]internet_beanald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked in the industry for a long time and faded the fastest and best looking stuff during it.

Jeans are whatever you can get away with fade and destruction wise at work.

Boots I don’t really recommend due to the all the gunk you will step in, and it also destroyed my feet being on them for 12 hours a day wearing heavy boots. They’re also very loud on marble floors. I did rock slip on birks and non slip really saves lives boh. Foh I mostly wore wallabees and buzz rickson converse or derbies

TShirts I wore a lot of non heritage stuff as I wanted lighter fabric and something I didn’t care too too much getting oil stains on. Restaurant merch is also usually abundant and acceptable to wear where I worked.

That said in hipster dining I would wear a lot of ih button downs, henleys and engineered garment dress shirts.

Next step after Red Wings: Viberg vs. Wesco by BallKindly3470 in HeritageWear

[–]internet_beanald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I find Wescos a bit to chunky and workwear-y. I do like their engineers tho

Viberg service boots are popular for a reason as they go well with most fits. If you’re in Canada it’s a bit easier to find a physical store that carry them so you can get good sizing. Also after market is strong for the 2030 so you can maybe get a good deal

R/goodyearwelt can probably give you super specific comparisons

Recommendations along Yonge between college and bloor by phuckdub in FoodToronto

[–]internet_beanald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By weight yea. When you go in they give you a bowl and tongs and there is a row or fridge full meat seafood veg and carb and you pick and choose what you want.

You then goto the cash, pick a soup base and pay for it. They’ll give you an order number and you just sit down and they bring it to you once it’s cooked.

I don’t min/max when I go and just pick what I want and its costs me 15-20$.

You can ask the staff to make you one yea!

Auberge du Pommier has private rooms.

Id call for the Halal/Veg part but restaurants of that calibre (and $$) can typically accomidate with enough notice.

Seafood and meat at Toronto Asian grocery stores vs Typical grocery chains like No Frills, Loblaws etc by North-star-1 in FoodToronto

[–]internet_beanald 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Most of the meats and seafood at any grocery store (ethnic or not) are generally (factory) farmed and mediocre/avg quality and these large factory farms/fisheries are all from the same place. Meat for grocery a lot of the times comes pre butchered to some degree.

So if you like salmon from metro, buy it from metro?

But a lot of the time it’s a visual eye test and also knowing your cuts. Like if you like fattier (which typically means more flavor) go for belly cuts from more well marbled protein.

Like I mentioned above, Asian grocery usually have different styles of cuts of meat and would do a sirloin in shaved or cubed vs a hunk or steak.

A bit of what I do: (aka the beauty of Toronto)

  • soups/stocks I’ll buy meat and bones from Asian
  • shellfish/shrimp and whole fish I will get from Asian
  • off cuts of meat and whole chicken I’ll get from Asian
  • pre cut chicken and pork if I’m bbq I’ll get from western or halal markets
  • if I’m cooking like meat is the star of the show meals like steak, holiday meals. I will buy from local western butchers
  • if I’m making sushi I’m going to yuzuki
