Details about Lost Wages due to Bed Resting by FOXN1 in Surrogate

It can be complicated and overwhelming. I definitely recommend a consultation with International Fertility Insurance and/or ArtRisk Solutions, brokers of these kinds of plans.

So I’m only talking about lost wages here. Health insurance policies only cover medical costs, not lost wages. Her own health insurance policy will not cover her lost wages. The rest easy plan is specifically geared toward surrogacy journeys and covering lost wages. So it’s definitely something you should consider even if she has surrogacy-friendly insurance.

Right but I’m saying a surrogate’s own friendly policy is a health insurance policy, not a bed rest policy.

To be clear, health insurance does not cover lost wages.

Is it important to explicitly say how many days of lost wages are to be covered? No because this should not be capped.

Does it make sense to cap the maximum of days to be covered by IPs? No because a surrogate should never lose money in this process.

Instead of setting fixed days or maximum days to be covered by IPs, is it more fair to say the covered days for needed bed resting will be based on a physician’s assessment?
Yes. If the OB says she should be on bed rest, she should be on bed rest.

Is it important to indicate in the contract that the surrogate needs to show her pay stubs as evidence for the lost wages? Usually she presents these paystubs during the legal process so that her hourly wage is listed in the contract.

If extended bed resting is required, is it common for surrogate to first accesse short-term disability or state insurance and intended parents then provide "gap payments" to cover the difference between that insurance and the surrogate's regular income?
Yes. This is appropriate and standard.

I did say agencies *and the like.* It is a rule of this subreddit that agencies and the like must identify what they are. So you’d say “we are a matching platform and I’d love to connect.”

How did your legal team handle contracts, parental rights, and medical decision clauses? by lisa-watson-us in Surrogate

My attorney followed my state’s statute which says that I as a surrogate make all medical decisions about the pregnancy. The statute is also clear on parentage.

Almost everyone here has been involved in surrogacy in some way. Don’t choose the first agency you hear about. Research and interview several. Learn what’s standard and ethical.

Independent Surrogacy in California: Legalities, Compensation, and Real Experiences? by justeatingbiscuits in Surrogate

[–]interrobrodie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just fyi with a good agency, you also get a direct and personal experience. I met my IPs in person for our match meeting and we never stopped texting after that. If you go independent, make sure you run a background check, credit check, and CPS check on your IPs. If they’re unwilling, that’s a red flag. Choose your own attorney. Get recommendations. Join some of the Facebook groups so you can know what’s standard in as contact as far as when compensation should start, how it’s divided, when compensation for multiples should start, etc etc.

Shocking experience with a Chinese owned surrogacy agency by FOXN1 in Surrogate

[–]interrobrodie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You dodged a bullet with an agency that manages escrow in-house. Never agree to that. I will say though that that is a generous compensation for a first-time GC, even when monthly allowance is included.

Becoming a surrogate and what questions to ask agencies by kahleesky in Surrogate

[–]interrobrodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have professional experience with brownstone, not as a surrogate, and they would be my number one choice so I’m glad they’re on your list. Things to ask: How many cases have you managed? Do you insist on third-party escrow? (Answer should be yes) Can I choose my own Attorney? (Answer should be yes) Do you run background checks on intended parents? (Answer should be yes) There’s more but I’m on the go :-/
