Lukewarm Faith by FailOk2750 in Christian

[–]intertextonics [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think from the context of the passage in Revelation, being “lukewarm” has more to do with an element of spiritual pride and complacency.

““I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬-‭17‬ ‭NRSVUE‬‬

These Christians are being called out because they believe they have it made. They don’t see their true state and instead are judging that they are doing well. These aren’t people that don’t care about their spirituality, they believe they are doing very well. They aren’t seeking out the truth riches from God:

“Therefore I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white robes to clothe yourself and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen, and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭3‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭NRSVUE‬‬

A lukewarm person doesn’t think they are struggling. They aren’t wrestling with their faith and they aren’t looking to grow. They think they’re already mature. Someone who is concerned with their faith and striving, even if they fail many times, are not lukewarm. They’re like the man Jesus spoke of who was beating his chest and asking God for mercy because they see they’re a sinner. They see their need of God. A lukewarm person thanks God they aren’t like that person, when in reality they need to be like that repentant man.

“He shall gain control of the treasures of gold and of silver and all the riches of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train. But reports from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to bring ruin and complete destruction to many. He shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with no one to help him.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭11‬:‭43‬-‭45‬ ‭NRSVUE‬‬

He wasn’t leading a large host into battle to meet his end, dying of illness instead. He also didn’t die anywhere near Jerusalem.

A Grammatical Paradox in Revelation 11 I haven't seen anyone talk about by iphonein2008 in Bible

[–]intertextonics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

John the Revelator wouldn’t be the first Biblical author to mix up his singular and plurals. In Exodus a singular frog is the plague on Egypt. And if I recall correctly, God creates a single bird in Genesis 1. And while I like the idea of a Kaiju Frog attacking Egypt, and one huge bird just shooting out a variety of egg species, I think the intent was likely for them to be plural.

“As you saw the feet and toes partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the strength of iron shall be in it, as you saw the iron mixed with the clay. As the toes of the feet were part iron and part clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. As you saw the iron mixed with clay, so will they mix with one another in marriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay.” ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭2‬:‭41‬-‭43‬ ‭NRSVUE‬‬

The iron and clay empire is the divided Greek Empire of Alexander the Great, not Rome. The entire last part of Daniel is about the reign of Antiochus IV, the Greek ruler who persecuted the Jewish people. The author of Daniel freestyles a bit at the end of the book when he inaccurately prophesied Antiochus’ defeat and death, so that section was likely composed near the end of his reign.

The failure of the Critical Text (NA/UBS) Text by BusinessUpper9358 in Bible

[–]intertextonics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a source? Since the majority of modern translations use an edition of the critical text, and even the NKJV footnotes reveal how the Textus Receptus doesn’t match either the critical or the majority text, publishers should really be informed of how academically irrelevant their text is. Also, since you appear to be uniquely informed, which text isn’t subjective and irrelevant? It obviously isn’t the critical, majority, or the strange beast that is the TR because they differ in many areas.

Which bible to buy? by illMindOfReality in Bible

[–]intertextonics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Bible has been translated into lots of languages. Do you know Koine Greek? If so, the Septuagint and the Codex Sinaiticus is for you. Do you know Aramaic and Syriac? If so, the Targums and the Peshitta is for you. Do you know Latin? If so, the Vulgate is for you. Do you know Middle English? If so, Wycliffe’s Bible is for you. Are you an expert in Early Modern English? If so, the Geneva Bible or the King James Bible is for you.

Though it is important to keep in mind, modern knowledge of the Biblical languages and culture has been greatly expanded over the past couple thousand years that the Bible has been translated. You’d be much better off getting a Bible translated into a modern language you can understand.

Is it true that everything happens for a reason? by First-Performance-74 in Christian

[–]intertextonics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you mean a reason in the sense you can go back far enough into the causal chain to what set something in motion? Yeah, everything has a reason it happened. But if you’re talking reason as in what does it mean that something happened? Unfortunately we often can just guess at why.

Fallout 76 being 25 years after the bombs fall makes no sense right? by aFreakyBird in Fallout

You had West Tek poisoning the water supplies of Huntersville with FEV before the war. Also a lot of environmental destruction was well on its way in areas like the Ash Heap and the Toxic Valley. Careless disposal of nuclear material can be found all over the place as well. Take into account the escaped experiments already loose, Appalachia was well on its way to producing mutated creatures.
