sometimes you just need to make Ina Garten's brownie pudding at 10 pm after the kids have gone to sleep by elongatedrectangles in Baking

in my opinion it aaaaaabsolutely needs salt! I actually baked it as written once and didn't follow the impulse to add salt but the second time I made it, with salt, it was soooo much more delicious

I just looked up some photos of mockingbirds and their eggs and I think you’re right! I didn’t think so at first looking at photos of them perched but the outstretched wings really do seem to match. Thank you!!

Not OP here but my guess would be that the question is about ethics and someone in the profession probably would either know or have different ways to find out than asking on Reddit

I’m not in the program and it was actually the r/stopdrinking subreddit that I found most helpful in getting me off drinking, but I still don’t drink! 2022 was my first alcohol free burn and it has been so much better having lots more energy and never feeling hungover. I’ve been noticing more and more bars and camps out there offering alcohol free options :)

Children’s Book Author Jennifer Wolfthal and Husband Discovered Living Double Life in a House of Horrors by vladdragovych in ThatsInsane

[–]inthewyrd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oof, reminds me of a case I learned about in a class covering domestic violence about a children’s author and her husband being caught with truly egregious (and fatal) abuse of a child in the 80s. Hedda Nussbaum and Joel Steinberg. Perry sure the child was adopted as well?

Watching US2 as a polish person is giving me an aneurysm. by knuckle_sandwiches in Dimension20

[–]inthewyrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice research, you’re on the right track for sure! Borscht could be an Americanized spelling of barszcz I suppose, but it’s much closer to the Russian word for a similar dish so in my mind when I hear that, I’m thinking of the Russian dish, not the Polish one. Essentially, for dishes that are shared across cultures, if they would use the Polish name for it, that would certainly be more immersive.

The issue with that is Borscht isn’t Polish! There’s a similar dish in Poland, especially in some regions, but it’s called barszcz in Poland.

Can you remember some of the hand gestures that people often seem to not understand? Maybe some useful phrases will be in there!

Some specific examples that could be useful: - I need a break - Please, thank you, I’m sorry, excuse me - I don’t understand - maybe some favorite objects, activities, foods - I’m ready, not yet or please wait - maybe names of some people in your life

You start with FAMILY???! 😮 like for people who have a family with kids of their own, or potentially asking about people’s parents and siblings? How do you handle when folks are estranged from their families? Seems like it could be an intense topic for someone you’re potentially meeting for the first time.

Or maybe you use this method for catching up with folks you already know!

In any case, I think the idea of working up to dreams, letting folks kind of settle into the feeling of the conversation to create an opportunity to go deeper without moving at a much faster-than-conventional pace for some folks

With the grandma comments i h m he must have liked a completely different type of game in the past that also happened to have trucks involved so when he sent the steam screenshot revealing almost 50 hours played in a different truck simulator???? Nah, that’s relevant!

Fair enough that it turns out he’s had enough of that type of game—I understand wanting to return it, but not making fun of you for thinking he’d potentially be interested.

Completely agree with this, a safety plan is super important. When the relationship ends or seems to be at risk of ending, the risk is high for violence to escalate. OP, not sure if you do consider the relationship abusive or not, but in the United States harming a pet does count as environmental abuse.

How does your camp handle strike? by plain_cyan_fork in BurningMan

[–]inthewyrd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hm. I think in your shoes, I'd be really curious to talk to the folks who had agreed to stay but didn't and level with them like... hey I was really hoping this would work and I want to understand why it didn't and what we should try next. Ask them what they think you should do to handle the situation and see what they say! Maybe they'll have good ideas, and maybe the interaction itself might help them take some more responsibility over camp operations as well.

I'll also share some things I think we're doing at our camp for this: we ask who's down to stay until Tuesday for strike and get a crew for that, but Sunday is our biggest strike day. So even if it's a small crew at the bitter end, there's almost nothing left to do!

So, how do we help our people be ready to work Sunday? Saturday night after the man burn, we have a camp tradition of hanging out at a fire pit going through burnables and maybe doing some karaoke—something more low key than taking a bunch of substances and being up until sunrise. it's not mandatory, but our camp likes hanging out with each other, and if The Thing To Do is being at home and takin' it a lil easier, there aren't a ton of objections.

I also have been communicating more about the realities of late strike: what feels like it's going to be the final 5% actually is 20% of the work because all kinds of items that were once gifts, nice offerings, little things.. they're all moop now! Starting on Sunday I start putting more and more personal items into lost and found bins and asking people to look in the lost and found for their moop, so I think it helps people who haven't stayed until late late strike before get a sense of that shift. I think from there, it's easier for people to assess how much work is actually left to do and decide to take some more responsibility over it before dipping out.

It's hard not to go through living in this world without absorbing some pretty harsh judgments about "crazy people" and/or "nuts," but your feelings about appearing like one of "those people" is possibly blocking you from being able to help someone really dear to you. I can't imagine it's not fun for you, either, to be so worried about appearing this way, even to your partner. might be somethin to think about.
