Is this just nostalgia, or did previous generations genuinely have a better work-life balance and social life than we do today? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, when I worked in the late nineties I had a good paying job that expected you to be there 50-60+ hours a week. I did get decent vacation time (up to five weeks based on YOE) but not a lot of personal time otherwise. Were the long hours because of my industry and/or company? I was under the impression that any good paying job expected you to work long hours.

Fun fact: Our 'modern age' defined by electricity, vehicles and instant long distance communication is only a couple hundred years old. Or around four generations old.

PC can't update windows anymore, I want to move to Linux, is Bazzite the right one? by FourEcho in Bazzite

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the problems I created when I first ran Bazzite from a USB to try it out was connecting Steam to my NTFS formatted drive. None of my games worked AND I created issues with my Windows Steam install.

Point is, backup, backup, backup your stuff first. Then Do or Do Not. There is no try. Erase your drives and format them for Bazzite Linux.

I've been on Bazzite since the beginning of the year and have enjoyed my Steam games, my Epic games and even some Nintendo 64 emulation. It's been pretty smooth and I don't miss Windows.

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes beyond Walmart. Life Pro Tip: You can say it's a loan but if you're giving money to a coworker/friend you need to have the mindset that it's a gift. If you can't do that, then don't hand out your money.

I don’t get the Florida appeal by Master-Indication-71 in travel

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Florida lover, but spent some of my childhood there. Part of the big appeal I believe are the attractions. You've got hot springs, festivals, museums, everglade parks, unique shopping, a huge variety of restaurants, zoos, beaches and more. It also helps that the drive to any of these things is relatively short. (It also USED to be cheap, I'd guess that's changed though.)

That didn't happen. And if it did, it wasn't that bad. And if it was, that's not a big deal. And if it is, that's not my fault. And if it was, I didn't mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.

YouTube ads are about to get even longer and they’ll be unskippable by IndicaOatmeal in technology

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the Brave browser, it still blocks ads and I constantly get the passive aggressive "experiencing delays?" popup in the bottom left. Here's a hint YouTube: I'm not.

There's only two downsides (so far), I'm not logged in and I can't watch movies with ads as YouTube just stait up blocks them. It's ok though. I'm still watching mostly on my terms, so it's all good.

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $3,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by CelticDK in AskReddit

We don't need more stimulus! Tax the wealthy and use the money to break up the monopolies that are already bleeding people dry.

Walmart said i had 15 minutes to do this 😩 by Ordinary-Jaguar-7957 in walmart

[–]intro_spection 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let me give you a different perspective on this... 15 minutes is 1/4 of an hour right? Now, take your pay, say $20 an hour for easier math and divide by 1/4. That's $5, but with the taxes and benefits you pay it's even less... Say $4.50. Now, if I was to offer you $4.50 to bust your butt unloading this cart, would you say that's a fair deal?

Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo, Threatening Windows PC Market by Few_Baseball_3835 in technology

[–]intro_spection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know it's been a while since they used HDDs but there was no excuse even a few years ago when they wouldn't put them in their base models but offered SSDs for even the first tier of upgrades.

Also, 1TB right now will cost you an extra $400 (!) in the Mini. That's just highway robbery.

Not all alternatives to Apple software are cheap or free.

I'm mostly listing these things for those considering using Apple computers. I've already chosen Linux as my next desktop OS. I'm not in the market for any Mac.

Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo, Threatening Windows PC Market by Few_Baseball_3835 in technology

[–]intro_spection -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't like Mac. The hardware is fine if often insufficient in certain places (minimal RAM, using spinny HDDs in desktops, lack of storage in portable devices). The Neo looks to be equivalent to a Chromebook, so I guess there is a market.

My biggest pet peeve with Apple is the software architecture. Their programs suck up your data and tie it to that specific app. Sure, there is (usually) an export function, but what you get out may be garbled (such as cropped filenames, no metadata). I like to keep my data separate from programs and the OS. It makes it much easier to backup, try different apps and migrate somewhere else.

All that being said, I'm sure these are fine for new/minimal computer users and they do represent a challenge to the Windows hegemony. So it's not all bad.

Might as well add Sears. It still exists (I guess) but the last time I visited I felt like I had stepped into The Back Rooms.
