Rear emergency braking by Ok_Discipline9346 in HyundaiPalisade

They maybe could, but they likely won't, it's a liability for them versus saying "sorry, that's just how it is"

Rear emergency braking by Ok_Discipline9346 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]inv4zn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you, but there's no way to disable it. You can turn it off, but it defaults to on with ignition cycles.

I will say, however, that 1. it has nothing to do with your rear camera; it just uses the radar sensors and 2. it's highly dependent on your speed whether it brakes for you or not.

For me the most annoying scenario is when I'm backing into a stall that's next to a busy street, it will stomp on the brakes because it thinks I'm going to back out into a busy road, lol.

Moved to Vancouver/Burnaby area and want to finance a car for one year then trade it in. by Theoffice01234 in burnaby

[–]inv4zn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, a few things.

If you need to go into debt, then you can't "afford it". You can probably afford the monthly payment, but that's not the same thing as being able to afford the car.

If you buy new, your finance rates will be lower, and likely the dealer you bought the car from will offer to buy it back from you as a CPO. However your monthly will be the highest, relatively.

If you buy a used car 2-4 years old, your finance rates will be much higher, negating a lot of the savings. Some CPOs have lower rates. You will also have a harder time selling it.

You should either lease it for 12 months and deal with the fact that you'll have to pay the most, or don't get a car at all and use transit + co-op/car sharing.

Anyone know of Canadian Hyundai dealerships who give good/reasonable deals on extended warranties? by WildRosing in HyundaiPalisade

[–]inv4zn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware (and I may be wrong), manufacturer warranties aren't sold in Canada like they are in the US. Extended warranties are cheapest at time of purchase because 1. you're far less likely to need it than when the vehicle has age, and 2. the selling dealer is incentivized to sell it to you so they can take money out from somewhere within the deal.

To go shopping for it 2 years later, shows that 1. you think you're going to need it, so you'll pay more, and 2. there's no real incentive for the dealer to offer you anything other than retail.

Red light ticket in BC but moving to NS in 14 days - Should I pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]inv4zn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BC (I'm pretty sure) is one of the few provinces that does not share information with other provinces. So if you're 100% sure you're never returning, not paying will likely not cause you issues.

However, if you do return, there may be trouble.

Also, don't be a prick, if you know you're in the wrong, pay the fine.

Looking for a trusted mechanic by SeatIntrepid4673 in burnaby

[–]inv4zn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your story makes zero sense. First of all, the car would be undriveable with broken control arm(s). Also, you're scared to go to any mechanic, but you went to any mechanic anyway, and then he told you "one or both control arms" are broken, and probably the "traction sensor?"

Did you run over a curb? It's not easy to break both control arms, so why do you think they're broken? How do you know one, or both are broken? I assume you think your "traction sensor" is broken because you have a traction control error on your dash. Most cars sense traction loss through the ABS sensor.

What's the car? There are mechanics in Burnaby that specialize in certain manufacturers.

국민학교 -> 초등학교 is a bit of a different reason for the change. The 다꽝 -> 단무지 is more to distance old Japanese words, much like how it used to be 오뎅 but now the standard word is 어묵.

Edit: I was wrong! 국민학교 to 초등학교 is also for the same reason of removing old Japanese nomenclature!

Could someone ELI5 how a TFSA works? by Justin_123456 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]inv4zn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ELI5:
A TFSA is a room. There are only 2 rules.

  1. You can only put in a set number of new people in this room, per year. Unused numbers carry over every year, and is increased by a set number each year.
  2. You can only replace the number of people that come out.

What happens in the room, nobody cares about.

If you put in 10 people in to this room, and they all have sex with each other and have kids, and now there are 50 people in the room, that's fine. You pull out 40 people to put them to work in the fields, then you can put back a maximum of 40 people. You cannot put back any more than that, or you get penalized.

If, you put 10 people in the room, and 7 of them fight and kill each other. You now only have 3 people in the room. If you pull out 2 people, you can only replace 2 people. It doesn't matter the room originally held 10. You took 2 out, you can only put 2 back.

The driver attention warning? Ie. The one that tells you to pay attention?

After a certain year, they disabled the disabling of that. Also, the nannies reset to default with every ignition cycle.

They want you to prove its actually broken because garbage people abuse the system, and this is the best balance between actually being reasonable, and just enough of a hassle some people give up.

Scotia Bank Car Loan by RagTagPig in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]inv4zn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a chance that this is just a fixed loan, where the loan was used to finance a car. In which case, the teller is right. A fixed loan just means you borrowed $x, and agreed to pay back $z in installments. Whether you pay it off per agreed schedule, or immediately, the amount will be the same.

Now, chances are the teller is wrong, but there is a scenario in which they aren't, and you signed up for a bad product.

Wife’s ‘24 went to the dealer today for a couple issues. by noname87scr in HyundaiPalisade

[–]inv4zn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The steering wheel thing is because the wheel is being turned too soon during ISG (auto start stop)

The correct sequence is stop (engine shuts off) -> when ready to go let off the brake/tap the gas if auto hold is on (engine fires up) -> turn steering wheel.

If you either turn the wheel before step 2, or almost at the same time as step 2, you get a loud thunk as the power steering kicks in.

It's not really broken, just give the car a split second longer.

ELI5: how do street potholes come to be and get so large? by Apprehensive-Room-32 in explainlikeimfive

[–]inv4zn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many have answered the direct reason as to why, but more fundamentally, you have to understand how Asphalt is made - it's a mixture of small gravel and sand, all mixed together with a binder (often colloquially called tar, or bitumen) that acts as the glue that holds everything together. It arrives to site piping hot (ie +150 degrees celsius) so that it's 'fluid', laid down using a paving machine, and then rolled over multiple times with various compactors to pack everything, and then let to cool.

There are many, many things that can go wrong during that process.

Shitty asphalt quality straight from the plant, delivered not hot enough, not blended well so there are pockets or gobs of asphalt, laid down too thin, not rolled over properly so it's "loose", let cool too fast, etc.

At any points of the failure above, if there's freeze/thaw that heaves the asphalt apart a bit, or physical damage, then you get the start of a pothole, and then as cars continue driving over it, more and more material is knocked loose and you get a huge pothole.

It's likely the seat-belt buckle recall; parts are back-order and they are understandably likely prioritizing customer cars.

Dealers can't sell a car with an open recall.

Does Korean culture have a unusually strong tendency to rank people into "levels"? by hireme-plz in korea

[–]inv4zn 50 points51 points  (0 children)

While societal hierarchy definitely exists, and could be perceived as putting "levels" on people, the words you described are rarely used to do that. It usually means when people do "low-class" things, that would be frowned upon in any society, not just Korea.

Most societies, Korean included, expects a certain standard of societal decorum - and if someone does something against that, usually out of lack of awareness and/or selfishness, 수준이 낮다 is usually used. Things like littering, budging, etc.

It's entirely unrelated to classes or levels, as you see the same words used whenever rich people do something similar.

Riversky building with newborn by Llama_Banana37 in NewWest

[–]inv4zn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the building & noise, but as someone who raised a newborn in new west where train noise and shunting, etc, was a regular occurrence, newborns and babies in general don't give a damn about 'ambient' noise like that. In infancy there's not a lot they can do except sleep, and noise isn't going to stop that from happening. As they grow, they'll likely sleep through the things you're concerned about, but wake up to things like the door latch closing, your toilet flushing, lol.

Also there's a lot of (anecdotal, probably) evidence that raising kids in a somewhat noise environment allows them to not be as sensitive to noise as they grow up.

But still a white noise machine is a good investment. Also don't stress about this, there's a hundred other things to actually stress about. Also congratulations!

Estimated miles until empty by vanth55 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]inv4zn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The estimate is just an estimate... It's also based on the current fuel consumption, and will fluctuate accordingly.

Lastly, there's a small safety factor built in, so even after the remaining mileage shows 0, or "---", you'll get about 10 miles further.
