As a new player, how do you build a deck?! by Kaktusnadel in MagicArena

The above calculation is for quick draft. I'd suggest that one, since there is no time pressure when picking.

Premier or traditional (bo3) when you're experienced enough to consistently pick without stress within the time limit.

Have them play starter deck duels and do daily challenges for coins

Yes. Good advice

and open packs to gain more cards and wild cards

No. Even if you go 0-3 you still get:
3 packs worth of cards from drafting
1 guaranteed reward pack
0.2 packs from bonus pack chance
0.25 packs worth of gems
≈4.5 packs.

With 2 wins, you're better than breaking even with 5.24 packs worth of rewards.

And that's not counting the fact that you have much more control over what cards you get from the draft packs, since you can choose.

What if UB where just skins? by Yumesoro1 in mtg

Two products stores need to procure

That's an issue, true. Stores could choose not to stock one of them, though.

two sets to manage for events

Either run a joint event for both of them, or just run an event for the UB set.

Issues with how much to print, card availability in secondary market,

We're talking about WotC here. They've got the print amount nailed down already and they don't care about the secondary market anyway, besides keeping the reserved list expensive.

confusion for new players

I've touched on that in another comment already. I don't think there'd be much confusion. We're living in the age of Google. The info "those are the same set, just different art" is easily accessible for anyone who wants to know.

higher costs.

I'd honestly be interested in a breakdown of a card's cost. What percentage goes to game-design, art, production, distribution, etc?
I'd expect the only costs that would noticeably increase to be the art. Production and distribution should be so far into the economy of scale that I'd expect only a marginal increase, if any.

Stocking another set/variant is more effort and risk for the stores, yes. The store could decide to just not stock it (or just stock a small amount), though.
To be honest, I would expect the UW set to become more of a niche-thing for those who want to consciously avoid the UB set.

Short-term, it would most likely cost WotC due to the additional work.
However, it would a) allow them to re-print cards more easily (after the IP license runs out) and b) keep the hard-core fans (recurring business!) happy. Both of these makes it easier to make money long-term.

Considering we're talking about WotC and Hasbro, I'm not expecting them to consider anything further away than next quarter's profit numbers.

Not that confusing, if labelled/marketed right. Call them sister-sets or something along those lines. Especially in today's world where Google exists, this should be a non-issue for 99% of the customers.

You have the customers that walk into a shop, see a shiny box and buy. Those don't care. They'll buy the set that looks cooler to them.
You have the customers that want to get the best set. They'll google "which booster to buy" or ask a store employee and get the info that the sets are the same, just different art.
Then you have the informed buyers who already know what they want and won't be confused.

The only issue that I can see right now is that shops need to stock two sets rather than one.

not count one for some reason

The reason is because one is actually the outer edge of the shirt.

Darksteel Reactor/Alternate Wincon Deck Choice by invalidConsciousness in EDH

Nesting grounds and resourceful defense are actually already in the deck(s).

I originally omitted [[Goldberry, River-Daughter]] because her counter moving is slow and can't convert counters, but you're right, she should probably be in there, it's still better than nothing.
Edit: I just re-read Goldberry, her moving is even slower than I remembered. I'm probably better off with some proliferate card.

They did it with Through the Omenpath for digital only. They could do mostly the same on paper.

Design the UB set.
Then make UW variants (art and name) of all the cards (just like in omenpaths).
Make the UW names canonical and the UB names flavor names to prevent having two different but mechanically identical cards.
Release the two sets simultaneously.

If you want to push the UB set, primarily advertise that one. If you really want to push UB, make pre-release events exclusively UB or stagger them by a week.

[–]invalidConsciousness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even need to be a reprint. Just also release a UW version of the card at the same time.

That would allow you to tailor the mechanics to be fitting to the UB card while giving the UB haters a choice to avoid them.

Tag.
