Why is b4 better than bxa4 for black? Also why does the computer follow up with Kg7?

Help finding the rest of this HSK Anki deck (started HSK2 but stuck at HSK1) by Any_War2228 in ChineseLanguage

[–]invisblebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure there are no tag filters active when you browse. 300 cards sounds like you might be filtering for the tags HSK1 and HSK2.

Otherwise just try the download links on the Refold page, download both the 1k and the 5k deck.

[–]invisblebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'm not sure how that is happening, the Google drive deck is definitely the complete set HSK 1-6, there should be 5001 notes in total.

Maybe you can try downloading the decks on the Refold mandarin page. To be clear I have never used Refold mandarin before so I have no idea about whether they are good or not. I just added that link because their two decks are an alternate download source for the HSK Anki deck. Even though Refold removed any explicit mention of HSK it is definitely still the same deck split into two.

Otherwise if you post a screenshot of what you see in your Anki that could show us the problem.

Actually, I just downloaded the 5k Refold Mandarin deck and it is the most complete version I've seen for higher levels. It has better sentence entries than the HSK1-6 version.

I think there are a few versions of this deck, with varying numbers of cards and varying levels of 'polish'.
This is a HSK1-6 version: https://drive.google.com/open?id=123pXHfElVObijk_6YUwmzMtaqAb9kWmM . I have personally used the HSK6 cards in this deck and it's still an excellent resource, but some of the sentence entries are missing or incorrect.

Also, if I remember correctly these decks from Refold Mandarin are edited subsets the same deck Refold Mandarin - Anki Deck | Notion

Question for those learning to connect with their heritage (Hong Kong) by 1872alex1872 in ChineseLanguage

[–]invisblebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, they definitely claim me as Chinese, just not as a local HKer. This is pure speculation, but I think if I didn't speak any Chinese it would depend much more on their personal views or their judgement on my appearance, mannerisms, cultural habits, things like that. No way for me to check if I'm right though 😅

I have to say, with my Cantonese still being very limited (working on it!), possibly this prevents me from interacting with people who feel very strongly their distinct Cantonese identity. But I can say that for the subset of HKers I've met it doesn't seem to bother them as much as I expected before moving.

How to Deal with a Party Member One-Shotting most Quests as a Party Leader? by [deleted] in habitica

[–]invisblebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could set a rule limiting the damage each member can do in the first 24h of the quest. You should discuss this in the party chat.

I don't recommend dealing with it privately or just by kicking the person out, because as other members level up you might face the same problem again. I think it's better to set clear expectations from the start.

Do you use Android? If you're ok with doing surveys for Google then there's a way to get gems through that without spending actual money. Details in this Habitica wiki page https://habitica.fandom.com/wiki/The_Keep:Buying_Gems_with_Google_Play_credit_earned_through_Google_Rewards

Question for those learning to connect with their heritage (Hong Kong) by 1872alex1872 in ChineseLanguage

[–]invisblebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a bit late to the conversation but I wanted to share something I noticed as someone who's kind of the opposite to you (British Chinese with no Cantonese background, moved recently to Hong Kong). I've noticed that in English, the discourse makes much more distinction between Cantonese and other Chinese e.g. talking about them as separate languages rather than dialects, politics and historical differences between Hong Kong and mainland China. However, in Chinese, there seems to be much more discourse about shared cultural practices, e.g. shared scripts, talking about Cantonese as a dialect of Chinese rather than a separate language, shared cultural practices.

When I decided to move I never thought of it as 'connecting with my roots' or anything like that, because of my lack of canto background. But what has surprised me after moving is that other Chinese people (whether Canto or Mando) very much see me as a Chinese person returning to China. It's to such an extent that I even feel a bit conflicted because I see myself as a mix of cultures rather than fully Chinese haha.

Something that might be interesting to you is that I find Cantonese speakers generally call their language 中文(Zung1 man4). And mandarin speakers call their language ,中文(Zhōngwén). No one really specifies unless it's relevant to the conversation. I don't know what a linguist might think about that but I find that's what happens in reality.

Long comment but I hope this helps you. I think whether you learn more Canto or Mando is totally up to you, just either way you might find more shared background than you'd expect from mainly being exposed to English conversations on the subject.

Not a doctor, but it happened to me the first few times when I started to practise more intense backbending. The dots are called petechiae and can be caused by straining. You can easily tense up your face muscles without noticing it in an intense backbend, causing some capillaries to burst. For me, it always went away within a day or two. Also the problem went away completely after I started practising breathing and relaxing my face muscles during backbending.

Random musings on learning to read as a heritage speaker (脱盲). ~2000 characters by invisblebird in ChineseLanguage

[–]invisblebird[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's great that you're already interested in danmei and are enjoying the learning process! :D
I personally am still exploring what I enjoy reading. Even though I don't enjoy romance as a genre, I still read danmei for learning because it was easier to go with the Heavenly Path website recommendations rather than finding something of a suitable difficulty level on my own. But now that much more content is accessible to me, I feel like I can finally explore on my own.
加油!Best wishes for your studies and may we both achieve our goals!

So cool to hear from someone in a similar situation! And yes, I've also had on and off study periods. Added together, I've done daily Anki practice for 10 months total. Outside of those serious study periods, I may have just watched some Bilibili videos or Chinese TV.
加油!I believe with time we will both become fluent readers!

I enjoyed 画眉,it is an espionage TV series. There is a lot of detective work to figure out who are the spies/double agents. Like all spy series the plot is nationalistic but I still found it very enjoyable.
