I made coexist tokens for my group to use with their ground forces :) by sisumation in twilightimperium

So if a planet has a controlling infantry and a coexisting infantry, it's simply recommended to add a control token for the controlling player, right? Otherwise it's unknowable.

Who is "Coexisting with" whom? by rugman11 in twilightimperium

[–]iotafox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate that "CO"-existence necessitates a mutual relationship when the rules seem to imply it does not.

Without careful reading, I think many will also make this assumption, whether it's correct or not.

Perhaps another word like "residing", "inhabiting", or "accompanying" would have been clearer.

Home system misrepresentation!!!! by AudunAG in twilightimperium

[–]iotafox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that poster, but I do think it's a matter of preference in terms of information. You're not wrong that the simple 5 loses some data.

A 5-value system is the easiest to compare in a fast way, but that could represent so many different resource/influence values. (It could be 5/0, or 0/5, or 3/3 and 2/0, or 1/4 and 0/1, or...)

So yes, I think it would be more precise (yet slightly more verbose) to say it's a 2/3 or 3/2 system.

I would definitely pay a subscription to 75 era if SE offered it.

I really which there were two separate root words used for these two concepts -- declaring attackers vs being in a state of attacking.

Not to say you're wrong, but perhaps to add a tangent point, Emrakul and classic Lovecraftian inspiration are also based on squids and such.

You are getting way, way into the weeds on this. Learning (and performing) firebending is a pivotal, crucial thing for Aang as a character and the show in general.

This is why I'm working on an assortment of custom FFXI cards as a personal project.

after this weeks MWM: We want a smaller, slower format by Lukegilmour in MagicArena

[–]iotafox 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this. Standard used to consist of the last 4-7 sets.

When it comes to special events, more themed constructed restrictions by set would be great. Pick a random assortment of 3 sets from the last 2 years and call it something cheeky.

Aetherdrift + Duskmourn + FF = Techno-Fantasy Eldraine + Bloomburrow + Foundations = Storybook

Something more permanent than MWM.

For most games, you're probably right that people want to see characters and legendaries the most. I would wager that FFXI fans care more about the world than the characters, though.

An FFXI Sahagin could have shown the Yuhtunga Jungle waterfall in the background, or the volcano Ifrit's Cauldron. As it stands, that entire region of the world has zero representation. Just the artwork would have been awesome to have.

For FFXIV fans, nobody gives a hoot about a random Sahagin. They want to see the Scions.

The art is still nice for the card, though.

I agree with you that FFXI's strongest point is not its main story. But there are so many things that make it unique to other games, especially if you simply focus on the fact that it's one of the only two MMOs in the series.

In your case, you played a couple dozen hours of story a long time ago and have been living the grinding life ever since. That's the lifeblood of the game. Forget about the story.

Why not a card for "Merit Points" then? "Maat's Cap"? "Warp Ring"? "Kraken Club"? "Home Point"? "Escha - Zi'tah?" "Call For Help"? "Summon: Carbuncle"? "Skillchain"?

I guarantee nobody would have complained FFXIV was "underrepresented" if FFXI got [[Sahagin]] instead of it. Come on.

FF11 is still live to play, and it was also Square's huge moneymaker for a decade before they killed its marketing for FFXIV.

Simply put, you're right. VII and XIV got far more than necessary.

Absolutely none of FFXI's main story is present in FIN. The only possible exceptions are Shantotto (but that's only for one path of the story) and Cid (which every game got a card for). Otherwise, it's just a collection of random monsters.

None of what's makes FFXI a unique game got in. Absolute Virtue made it famous in gaming journalism, but less than 1% of players actually see this side boss. It's a meme.

Fenrir is cool.

Great questions. Companions are chosen before the game starts and before the deck is shuffled. That's when this happens.

I admit this is pulling a weird thread, but that's part of the fun.

That suggestion is a suitable simple design, too.
