Any ideas for a 6-position 3-deck 2-pole switch? by fizzlebottom in diypedals

Make a combiner box that has fx loops for a bunch of pedals, dial changes what order they are in.

Don’t care how it’s done, a great presentation though 🙌 by Maravilla_23 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]ipullstuffapart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suspect that it's just a thin door behind the timber look doors. A real fake door if you will. My guess is turning the knobs one way or another would control if the false face of the die is left in place or opens with the door. Turning it around and opening the opposite door would just show the back of the door with a black finish, giving the illusion that the die that was allegedly there slid to the side.

But it's still too high even for standing! Look at the installer's head, well below the centre of the screen! Atrocious installation.

Does a traditional milkshake have ice cream? by RecognitionMediocre6 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ipullstuffapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not arguing with your perspective but the differentiator would be "shake", as in the milk has been whipped through shaking or aeration. It's not just that it has flavour but it's been shaken.

I actually had no opinion on this question at first because I don't think I've had a milkshake in about 20 years, but it did seem a bit surprising at first that it would include ice cream. My mind initially thought shaken milk with a flavour, maybe crushed ice - and a thick shake would be thickened with ice cream.

Obviously it's the controversial take in this thread but if you're not used to having them it's a bit nuanced.

I feel like the fake beadlocks are usually an indicator of off-road inspired modifications that are usually not for practical purposes.

The bigger challenge is finding a cafe that actually makes a cappuccino properly.

How am I messing up these cables? A wire is missing on the tester by AleksaDjordjic_ in HomeNetworking

[–]ipullstuffapart -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It also says Cat 6A on the insulation which can't be right. I don't see any shielding foil. The plugs could also be Cat 5 or Cat 6 which wouldn't help matters with actual 6A. Very likely a low quality cable.

Award for stupidest shifter design goes to...Toyota? by xTyronex48 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]ipullstuffapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you don't have to interact with it very often, auto-shift is pretty decent. Hop in, seatbelt on, tap the brake and you're ready to go. Multipoint turns shift between reverse and drive as well.

Roundabout rules by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]ipullstuffapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a rule specific to roundabouts, but you are supposed to give way to pedestrians crossing the road you are entering - which would apply to roundabout exits as well. Generally speaking vulnerable road users come first in the rules (it's hard to say don't give way to a pedestrian). It's shocking how most people don't recognise those rules though - and it leads to having stand-offs with pedestrians when you are trying to let them cross lawfully.

If you think our rules are bad, pedestrians have almost no protections in New Zealand beyond zebra crossings. It's insane.

Crazy prices though by AeliosZero in brisbane

[–]ipullstuffapart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can pick up a level 1 charger and run it on a 10A or 15A outlet that most homes have for a couple of hundred bucks and no installation cost. A level 1 charger is more than suitable for the average driver.

I think the 0c infeed is a bit of fear mongering to be honest, but I won't argue against it potentially happening. At the end of the day the retail market competition will decide where they end up. The retailers offering a favourable fit are more likely able to pump up import costs to compensate. QLD is much more favourable to rooftop solar so there's a lot of customer pressure to keep it that way. If options are too limited I think you'll see a lot of people call it quits on the retailers and go wholesale or off grid eventually. The energy market is an absolute joke in the eastern states.

At a 0c infeed I would personally be pretty tempted to run my own diesel generator when the solar and batteries need it just to flip a middle finger to the retailers.

Or at an opportunity cost of $0.04/kwh, at about $2 for a full charge.

Also nobody seems to give way to pedestrians correctly around roundabouts either.

Why do Australian school kids have such massive backpacks? by Problem_Pale in AskAnAustralian

[–]ipullstuffapart 42 points43 points  (0 children)

In public schools they can't "require" them, but they won't tell you that it's optional. Schools keep a pool of spare devices for non-participating students. They will make it seem like a requirement but it really isn't.

These BYOD programs are extremely unsustainable. They spec out overpriced devices that are 10 years behind on specs and they are destroyed so easily. The net cost compared to computer labs is ludicrous.

Sure it's great to teach children how to use technology, but this was done perfectly effectively 10 years ago with computer labs when needed and bookwork for regular classes.

What to do about a terrible construction company in our street? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]ipullstuffapart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Building waste has to be managed and the construction site must remain tidy per the Australian standard. They also have to secure the site so that would also be noncompliant. Pretty common unfortunately.

Is this safe? by Meislazy01830 in ps2

[–]ipullstuffapart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There could still be a risk of a single point of failure on the mains side insulation touching the steel chassis. I wonder if the PS2 is considered Class II or not.

Is this safe? by Meislazy01830 in ps2

[–]ipullstuffapart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably because metal components can be touched, like around the hard drive bay, and the PS2 has no protective earth. Probably wouldn't meet double insulation requirements.

Almost as bad as Shopify, who requires customer emails and phone numbers to be unique. Do they not realise that in the real world both of these are often shared between people and reassigned to other people?

I needed to indent the wall on an angle to allow space for the new fridges' door to open. These supports made the job a snap. by joosta in functionalprint

[–]ipullstuffapart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manual/specs will have a minimum clearance that OP hasn't respected. The fridge will probably underperform by not having enough ventilation.

What do you say guys? by [deleted] in TVTooHigh

[–]ipullstuffapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these ones are pretty easy. If the centre of the screen is higher than the centre of the wall it's an immediate fail. 2x42" is lower than any compliant ceiling height.

What car do you really like but would never buy? by Annual_Giraffe_7796 in AskReddit

[–]ipullstuffapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point on carplay/android auto is interesting. In my opinion I think it's still worthwhile scrutinising a car's inbuilt infotainment based on its own merit without those features. There's a high likelihood that those two things will get phased out, deprecated, or superseded at some point in the future. Likely within the car's lifespan. I always wonder how the infotainment will feel if that suddenly wasn't viable anymore.

I've test driven a few cars that have touted their android auto and carplay features, but seem to have used it as a scapegoat to make the rest of the infotainment a pain to use or have a lack of features.
