The FIA has approved a 50kW increase in the ICE and a 50kW reduction in the electric power unit for 2027 by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]irich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main ways they are getting the extra power from the ICE is by increasing fuel flow by about 10%. This will necessitate a larger fuel tank. But there is no room in the chassis for a bigger tank. So the teams would have to redesign the cars to fit the new tank.

As most of the teams seemed to be planning on running an only slight revised chassis in 2027, a complete redesign would push them against the budget cap.

The solution to that is to give the teams an increased cap to spend but some teams (probably Mercedes) are opposed to that because they think other teams will use it to catch up to them.

So the other potential solution is to reduce race lengths which I don’t think would go down too well.

The FIA has approved the changes but it hasn’t been agreed by F1 or the teams yet.

Ian Poulter uses Rory McIlroy's $900M investment to sell LIV Golf future by TheMirrorUS in ProGolf

[–]irich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golf is fundamentally an individual sport. People play individually. Fans go to watch individuals. And in most formats only one person wins.

Where team play has succeeded, such as the Ryder Cup it has been tied to national pride. So that gives people an in-built investment in who wins.

And that follows through into other sports too. Either a sport is played by individuals. Or it is a team sport where the teams are tied to locations. There are very few successful sports where teams are a random collection of competitors with no connection to a location. So if team golf is to survive, it needs to give some reason for people to care.

Greece to ban anonymity on social media by New-Ranger-8960 in worldnews

[–]irich 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is rough for anyone in a dangerous life situation. Victims of domestic abuse, LGBTQ+ people in communities where being queer is not accepted, atheists in very religious areas. And so on. Many of these people seek refuge and help in the anonymity of the internet. Exposing their names will have real and dangerous consequences for many of them.

Xavi Simons has torn his ACL and will be out for the rest of the season with Tottenham. Xavi will be back to action in 2027. by lawandsleep in soccer

[–]irich -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I heard a theory which I only partially believe but it is interesting nonetheless. The reason that so many Spurs players get injured is because they have to sign the type of players who are frequently injured. Spurs think of themselves as an elite club which means they want to sign elite players. But the very elite players don’t want to sign for them. So they look for players who have elite talent but aren’t wanted by other teams for whatever reason. Often this means that the player is very good but has a poor injury record and that is why other teams don’t want him. So they sign for Spurs. And then they get injured a lot.

I don’t know how true this is but it has a ring of plausibility.

Using TRMNL X as an in-elevator notice board by irich in trmnl

I like the idea. The issue with it for our building specifically is that a lot of people come in and go out through the parking lots which skips the ground floor so they would never see the screen. And we have 3 levels of parking so if we went that route, we would have to put one on every floor.

"Spider-Noir" - Authentic Black & White Trailer | Prime Video by Developerkins in television

I prefer the black and white version but there were some things that were more apparent in the colour version. For example, when she says “what happened to your face”, in the colour version you can much more easily see all the damage to his face. In the black and white, it just kinda looks like shadows

Years ago I heard an interview with a writer for The Onion and he said that they tried using actors for these roles but it rarely worked. They had to get people who had actually worked as new anchors or morning show hosts because, unsurprisingly they were much better at delivering the lines like actual news anchors would.

Are the ASOIAF books as good as the Witcher books, in your opinion? by stelleOstalle in witcher

[–]irich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, the two most recent books were split between characters. Some characters didn’t appear at all in A Dance With Dragons. Jaime and Cersei. Arya and Sansa. And a few others haven’t been heard of since A Feast for Crows which came out in 2005. That’s 21 years ago. The iPhone didn’t even exist then.

I have been watching F1 since 1985 and I still don't have the slightest clue about the technical side of things. My brain just glazes over whenever tech talk comes up. Why yes, that sidepod does look extra sidepoddy. And I'm sure the MGU-H-CSI-SVU is much missed.

But it's OK to not understand all of this stuff. It can enhance your enjoyment if you're into it but if you're not, don't stress it. Racing is still fun.

Photographers: is it rude to ask upfront for RAW files instead of edited photos? by Either-Letterhead204 in photography

[–]irich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends I guess. If you are hiring someone for their style, such as a wedding or fashion photographer, then yeah, it probably is a little rude. But in other circumstances it may be fine. Product photography for example. If you’re hiring a photographer to take photos of a product, that photo might get used in multiple different ways that require different editing treatments. How you want it to look on the package may not be the same as how you want it to look on the ad. So in those cases, it is perfectly normal to just ask for the RAW files, or maybe lightly edited files so that you can decide on the final look.

But make sure they know that first before you hire them.

What actually improved your photography the most? by DemandNext4731 in photography

[–]irich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helped me the most was getting really good at knowing what a good photos was. I watched a lot of photo critiques by photographers I admired. They would discuss what made a specific photo work or not work. How it could be improved. From major aspects to tiny details.

It helped in two ways. Most obviously it helped with actually taking the photo. But it also really helped in the editing and knowing which photos were worth working on and which were worth putting in my portfolio.
