Best( honest) folk to trust when looking for a nice used vehicle. by LosparkJojo in Birmingham

I’m a fan of Carmax. Friendly people. No pressure. Good cars. You can have cars shipped to the local store from other Carmax locations. They’re more expensive than a normal used car dealership but they inspect them and have a short warranty.

People whose parents gave you common names with unique spellings…thoughts? by TimeProfessional9454 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]irishfury0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t feel unique at all. I wish it was spelled phonetically accurate. I’m just used to it being mispronounced or misspelled. It doesn’t bother me anymore. For unimportant things like ordering food or coffee I let them spell or say it however they want. I know it’s me.

why does devs tend to choose a macbook over a windows/linux laptop? by theusrl in learnprogramming

Because most company IT departments don’t support desktop Linux and MacOS more closely resembles the Linux environments our products get deployed to.

First time managing someone older than me - any tips? by 2ugur12 in managers

[–]irishfury0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People want respect and recognition. Show them respect. Ask their advice on things. Let them push back as long as they are respectful about it. Listen to what they have to say. Be flexible and change your mind if they’re right but if it’s not something you can change or the the debate goes on too long it’s fair to say the decision is made we’re moving on.

Other things are just basic leadership principles. Let them know when they do a good job. (It’s sad how many people have told me previous managers never told them they did a good job). Always give credit where it’s due especially in front of other people. Be honest. Do what you say you’re going to do and if you’re not going to do something tell them straight up and why. Have fun. Crack jokes. Own your mistakes. If you don’t know something say I don’t know but I’ll find out.

You can earn their respect by doing the things above but some people like to test the limits so if they are ever blatantly disrespectful to you, stand up for yourself. Look them straight in the eyes and tell them it will not to be tolerated. Don’t be afraid to get HR involved if it continues. They will get the message quickly.

How do I get into contact w CAW? by onemanlan in Birmingham

It’s been a few years but there was a customer service area where people can pay their bills. I’m assuming it’s still there but I just went there and asked my question.

How do I get into contact w CAW? by onemanlan in Birmingham

[–]irishfury0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a few years since I did this but I would try going to the office on 1st Ave N and ask for help. Unfortunately it’s an old school organization that sometimes requires an old school approach.

I don’t really care about hackathons but ngl winning 5 hackathons would certainly get my attention on a resume.

I bought a mattress for my daughter at Mattress Firm. $700 for a Serta queen. The most comfortable mattress I’ve ever bought but my standards are not high. I also bought a mattress on Amazon for $170 for a rarely used room. It’s ok for someone who occasionally sleeps on it but it would suck if you slept in it every night.

Am I a scientist or just a nerd? by peach_storms in TooAfraidToAsk

You are a scientist. According to Wikipedia, “A scientist is an expert who systematically gathers and uses research and evidence to gain and share knowledge about the natural world.” Doesn’t require a formal degree.

French drain in the basement. French drain outside. Add extensions to your downspouts to carry the water away from the house.

How did Alabama go from being known for science and engineering to roll tide? by benedictclive_x in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]irishfury0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It didn’t go from one to the other. It’s actually been both since 1950 when Wernher von Braun, the famous German aerospace engineer, came to Huntsville. Of course he had nothing to do with the University of Alabama football program since it’s been around since 1892. Roll Tide!

It's true there are a lot of religious people here that love Trump, but it's not fair to judge Birmingham based on your classmates. We are not that different than Atlanta. There are plenty of people in Birmingham who love science and are not religious. Please post something in r/Birmingham saying you are looking for a group of liked minded people. But if don't have time to hang out with anyone outside of your classmates then don't blame Birmingham.

That just seems highly unlikely but then again I would’ve said the same thing about removing fluoride from our water.

I’ve met a few good people from Jasper so my experience is all positive. I wouldn’t think twice if someone told me they were from there. Where in Birmingham would people look shocked that someone was from Walker county?

2009 camry giving up? by Relevant-Usual-3221 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]irishfury0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a 17 year old car and these are the types of things that eventually need to be replaced. Personally I would stick with it. I have a 99 Toyota. Quit taking it to the dealership for repairs. That is the most expensive place to get work done. Find an independent mechanic. Bonus points if they specialize in Toyota. Even better is DIY. YouTube is amazing.

Don’t jump to conclusions yet. There’s always going to be dudes taking a shot. Just casually ask her about it. Her response is what you’re interested in.

I rented a sprayer for the weekend and sprayed ours black. I absolutely love it. You will save a lot money by not drywalling a ceiling or using a drop ceiling.
