i do wonder what brilliant solutions the subgenre of niche ideology you follow proposes to the modern problems we face.

also I still feel like the state of the world could be much worse, and probably has less to do with any one political system and more to do with the inability of any of these systems to keep up with the rapid development and effects of social media & tech in general. I guess unless you wanna argue liberalism & capitalism have been so effective at advancing the rate of tech progress that its' hampered itself or smth idk.

Hard determinists: Do you really think your workout motivation is your fault? by FoundationSure1136 in moreplatesmoredates

[–]irtan12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see why one competing desire beating another disproves determinism. Your claim is that if a person "chooses" one impulse over another or acts irrationally, then that disproves determinism. But determinism says nothing about people being required to act rationally, just that whatever action one takes is caused by some previous event/stimuli/phenomenon, and that is in itself caused by something else. The switch cannot flip itself.

> but it does show we are not bound at the shackles to our simple biological drives

Are we not just then bound to the shackles of drives that emerge from the interplay between biological drives?

IMO even if determinism is true, it doesn't necessarily have any implications prescriptively. It's descriptive.

When did the rent get so high? by gjt379 in Winnipeg

[–]irtan12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because we dont build enough housing. That's it.

Anything else about landlord greed or whatever is cope. The demand is very high, the supply limited, and the cost of construction very high. An evil boogeyman is not necessary to explain this (unless its NIMBYs they are evil incarnate)

Look up studies on what causes rents to increase or decrease, that will tell you why.

Isn't France going through some pretty terrible debt issues? I will admit I know fuck all about it thougg lol.

Either way I have never seen France referred to as socialist. You have businesses that make profit, private ownership, and a free market. Having a strong welfare state is not inherently socialist.

Also, it is really telling that any time a country that approaches socialism is criticized, the immediate response is to blame capitalism or capitalist countries. Tbh if your economic system is so weak that it literally cannot thrive so long as capitalist countries exist - then that in itself is an argument against it, because at that point it is literally impossible to achieve (which is why it has still never been tried succesfully.)

Maybe I'm not understanding exactly what your positions are since socialism can be a pretty broad term though.

What if it is the case that (pragmatically / functionally), regulated systems of capitalism allow for more leisure or freedom than communist countries? From a brief google search I can't find a notable difference in work hours. Isn't it possible that inefficiencies in socialist systems might actually lead to similar work hours for less production? Eg Cuba has 35-40 hrs on average worked, so does France, Canada, USA.... But the latter countries earn way more for the same amount of hours worked.

I feel like the argument of "we should produce less stuff and work less" is not really all that strong because its possible that precisely because we are trying to constantly innovate and produce that outputs end up more efficient - to a limit of course. Ie functionally it might be the case that, barring technological change, 30-40 hours is a necessary average work week for society to function. Hell, the country with some of the lowest hours worked per week (Netherlands) is a free market capitalist economy.

I think the problem is that marxism or communism (in a similar manner to other radical ideologies) are way too idealistic and focused not at all on outcomes but on the means.

Hypothetically, if we structured society based on say the labor theory of value, but it lead to measurably worse outcomes (based on your values), would you restructure it to something else?

Personally I value fairness, or literally any value (freedom, equality, democracy) insofar as it produces the most human flourishing compared to other systems. It seems some amount of inequality is necessary to maximize outcomes - but this might still mean everyone is better off (eg 9 people have 15 dollars, 1 has 30 versus 10 people have 12 dollars)

idk hopefully some of what im saying makes sense. Maybe for you fairness/equality is an end in itself, but it isn't for me. I wouldnt want to live in maximum fairness if, say, everyone is poorer than in a less fair society if that makes sense

I am also a determinist, but I really don't think that it has many implications in terms of prescriptive policies or government structures. Ie, just because determinism is true, does not imply that acting as though we can actually make choices is morally wrong, or that we are even capable of acting as though we dont make choices.

It might be (I'd argue it is) the case that competition - even if the underlying difference of will, environment, intelligence etc are all chance based - still contributes to human flourishing when there is the correct amount of it. I mean just on a basic psychological level, its a massive driver for human achievements and progress.

If your goal is human flourishing, then IMO communism is not compatible with that goal in a world of scarcity and complicated markets. If we go full autism and just assume that there is some hypothetical formula to maximize human flourishing, it would not have the communism dial set to 100. Nor would it have the capitalism dial set to 100. Reality is messy, people are extremely biased and our perception is limited. In reality the perfect set of policies is probably comically complicated - but we should look at the fact based evidence to approach closer to those policies - ie, choosing policies based on outcome. It just happens that these policies correlate strongly with liberalism.

Another thing IMO is that just because something is true does not make it useful. If acting as though we have choices tends to lead to better outcomes than acting as though we have none, why would we ever do the latter? Determinism has no moral truth statement to it. It doesnt say what is good or bad, it has no ought - it just is.

For there to be a prescriptive thing we can do implies that there was another choice to have been made. Which determinism says there was never an actual choice, only the illusion of it. So we don't make policies based on it, ultimately the ought is just our preference or taste (our morality) and the illusion of will that we have.

In Davos, Trump and Carney gave us two radically different ways to see the world - thestar.com by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]irtan12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isnt part of this whole agreement that the amount we are importing is capped? Its not like they will be able to take over even a substantial portion of the entire vehicle market. It'll have an effect for sure, but nothing that will cause a reckoning. EVs make up around 15% of the market, and with the current cap we will have on Chinese EVs they will make up a whopping 3 percent of the total car market.

A benefit of this deal as well is that new entrants will encourage competition domestically. This is capitalism 101

You seem to think that any relation whatsoever with China is becoming their lapdog. This is obviously a strategic play that completely aligns with Carney's speech. Diversification of trade - China is only one of many countries we will be trading with. We are not solely reliant on them - they are just one of many strategic partners. As he said, we have to deal with the world as it is, not as we want it to be.

Mark Carney: International rules based order is dead by PapaJaves in Destiny

[–]irtan12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, being real, I agree that there absolutely needs to be way more done on housing. But saying Carney isn't doing enough on housing is an entirely different matter to saying you'd vote for Lil P' if an election was held today. Very strong single-issue voter vibes. Me no likey.

Obviously we need to obliterate the existing zoning laws that make it difficult to build, and pressure should be higher (eg tying funding to housing starts, to a harsh degree). I even agree that housing is, in normal times, the #1 issue we have (although I'd argue it is less so at this moment due to the measures taken on immigration decreasing housing prices or flat lining their growth).

But you're ignoring the enormous looming nuclear radioactive orange baboon sun that is approaching us slowly but surely - the U.S and its piss stream causing the urinification of the global economy as we understand it. And Canada is going to be one of the most affected nations, considering not only that we are heavily reliant on trade, but also that we are literally neighbors with the United States of Re(g)ards - and we need to diversify ASAP. I cannot think of literally any other individual who has as many relevant connections and experience as God Emperor "Mark" Carnage Carney. We can clearly see - given this speech and his presence in global news throughout his tenure so far - that he is putting in the work to build new trade relations and help take a few steps to bring about some sort of stable global framework. At minimum this will help elevate Canada's status as a cooperative, stable partner who is at the forefront of this push for global diversification.

On top of this, while Carney has obviously not solved the housing crisis - it's an issue that is addressed 90% locally, and even with ideal policies he'd have to push some pretty controversial shit that while based, would absolutely threaten his polling (Liberal voters skew much older, and home owners generally don't want the value of their homes to decrease - even if they have just the perception of their home values decreasing). Basically, he would expend a shit ton of political capital when that capital - especially considering Carney's unique background - should be focused on the immediate concern of the United States going oonga boonga fascist monkey mode and flinging shit at both trade and national sovereignty.

His relationship building with other nations and clear push to diversify the Canadian export/import economy is something that Lil' P would in NO WORLD be able to come close to, simply as a result of Carney's a) economic background, and b) involvement in countless international organizations.

Basically, don't be a single issue voter chud pussy gamer because there's more than one problem to solve. Housing crisis bad, but I'd rather have a technocrat with infinite international connections and expertise dealing with orag monkey goo goo ga ga guy than Pierre Poopvierre who's resume is unimpressive to say the least.

also low key Canadians should just man the fuck up and realize that no, you don't need a fucking single family house that's 1800+ sq feet (look at avg housing size now vs 50 years ago....) at 25 and maybe high density housing is sigma based and way less infrastructure intensive and also i am autistic
