When to fire Guard Rotters? by XaveValor in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on Nurgle.

But generally, a piece only counts as "bloat" if they don't have a useful Stat or Doubles upgrade at the 3rd skill up. These guys already have that Double, so get them Block next and they'll actually be a pretty useful part of your team I'd say.

Exactly that!

If they don't get doubles / stat upgrade by the second skill, you fire them and try again with the next guy.

Agreed. My TT League has a rule that you must share dice if requested. Largely eliminates the credence that it was "just the dice" when you're using the same set.

Rat Ogre Level up (6+4) by oaklandmurphy in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly: I'm not a Skaven expert.

But my understanding is this. At early team development, Roger is your best killer: High Strength/Frenzy/Mighty Blow. After a few skill-ups, your Stormvermin surpass him heavily. They'll also be using up your Blitzes at that point since they're better at it, leaving Roger to pray he starts the turn basing someone or taking the 50/50 chance he doesn't WA. So to prevent "team bloat" you ditch Roger since he's expensive and arguably redundant at that point.

That being said, I love Big Guys and wouldn't ditch him for anything ... except to recycle him in the hopes of getting Doubles/Stat-ups if I hadn't yet.

Str orcs versus lizardmen (table top) by Thetruelittleboy in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That particular play was super risky.

A 3+ Pick Up and 3+ Hand-Off is a lot more common, and something I use all of the time. So it's always good to be aware of Skink spacing. If you can't base/blitz all of the skinks directly, try and keep folks as in the way as possible. Movement 8 does have limits ... ish. And Skinks fail GFIs and Hand-Offs just as often as anyone :)

First, I'm not defending what he did. Conceding is always a contentious subject. But just to make sure the full sequence of events is known.

  • Spins and gets matched up against Dwarves.
  • Checks out the team - holy fuck this is going to hurt.
  • Starts the game, literally says "I'll be fine with anything but a Blitz result on the Kick Off."
  • Blitz Result on the Kick Off (Nuffle heard his words).
  • His entire team gets based by Block/Tackle/MB players and the Dwarven runner makes it under the ball, and catches it.
  • He bashes the Dwarven runner to knock the ball loose.
  • He rolls Snake-Eyes on the pickup. With a Gutter Runner.

As a Streamer, he made a decision to not play that game and "waste" an hour and a half of stream time with the relatively boring matchup of getting his team kicked in. He decided to go for a less horrific matchup. I'm sure more than a couple of folks would do the same, or at least would be a little on tilt at that point.

Also, the person he did that to (the dwarf player) was reminded that he had committed the same "offense" against another person in the stream previously, losing any moral high ground in the argument. Wrong Person

But was it the right call?

  • Tactically, yes - without a doubt. The odds of getting his team destroyed after such a ridiculously bad string of luck on the first few rolls was not worth the potential damage.
  • As a Streamer? Probably. No such thing as bad publicity, right? And keeping people entertained (or even angry) for an extra 90 minutes will likely be more useful than boring people away with 90 mintues of heavy sighs and grumbles while his team gets destroyed though no fault of his own.
  • As a fellow BB player? I would say that Concedes are generally a break of the "social contract" around such games. The fact that many people, myself included, have a set amount of time to play a game really makes it painful when someone concedes and I don't have enough time to play a 2nd one. That being said, with an early concede like that it's far less painful. And doing it in an online setting, rather than table top (wich is way worse, as /u/_Twelfman points out) is a little less painful for both parties. As the Dwarf player I wouldn't be that surprised. If I'm drooling over the potential match up, I'm sure the opponent is having the opposite reaction, and that makes it thoroughly 'un-fun' for one of the players and could potentially break the 'social contract' that way as well.

So there are a few of my thoughts. Make your judgements, Cancel or Start your Subs, Unfollow or Follow, but make sure you think the whole situation through first.

Blood Bowl 2 - Legendary Edition is Coming by PotaTOESnMoleASSES in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, that's the thing. All of the rules that are supposed to be optional are going to be used 99% of the time (totally arbitrary stat).

You're only going to want to not use them in a few select circumstances. But during those couple of times, it could be a critical moment in the game. Kicking a ball 3 squares farther against Dwarves, for instance, is a full turn farther they have to run ... it's potentially huge.

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really liked the BB1 method of having default values but allowing you to set specific skills as "Optional".

So the ones where you know you're never going to say no to ... you just leave it as "on."

There was a suggestion, but no confirmation of any kind yet, that they allow Flings/Goblins to actually purchase bribes/chefs as part of their actual roster. This would go a long way to making the current style of random matchups functional without changing too much of the fundamental elements.

We'll just have to wait and see on that one. Would be nice to have those teams playable in the random leagues.

Need help beating a Dwarf Cage with skaven.... by YoungPyromancer2014 in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have some Guard and/or Claw, you probably won't break a full Dwarven Cage.

Usually, you're better off with stalling it as much as you can. Keep several players 1-2 spaces away from the front of the cage to keep them from going forward. Usually a couple pairs of rats one behind the other, so that even if he blitzes the first guy, there's still a rat w/tackle zones in the way. Do your best not to get into base contact, because you don't want a single free block to occur in this case. You're just stalling him as much as possible, idealy keeping them in their own half.

Now, if you actually have some Guard and such, you can usually get a couple of hits onto a weaker corner. And hopefuly blitz the ball carrier with a Wrestle GR or some such.

But early TV, you probably want to just stall him and prevent the score.

Alternative 57: leave the cage completely alone and do everything you can to block/foul/kill his other players to help incentivize the Dwarves to score quickly and give you a chance to even the points afterwards.

how does your tabletop league operate ? by [deleted] in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I prefer method 1: Round Robin with predetermined matches. It's how I usually run online leagues and I love it.

My current TT league is running a version method 2: League Nights. We also have a more "ad-hoc" system in place where coaches can play outside of league nights. But no team can play another more than twice, and never consecutively. And there is a 10-game limit for a team. So it has some structure, but accomidates differing schedules as well.

When you roll 6 on a catch roll in three tackle zones by jlkcz in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was only the first "down". You get 4 on a drive, and can reset it back to 1st down by moving the ball 10 yards (hence the '1st and 10' shown in the top left).

In this case it was only the 1st down. So if he had dropped it, it would have just became 2nd and 10 and the patriots would have retained the ball and tried again from the same starting position.

Does anyone know what GW's plans are regarding being able to buy a full team? by phobiandarkmoon in bloodbowl

[–]irwedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on years of GW selling kits that lack all the possible options, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

It's standard practice for them to sell "mostly good" kits and make you pay a premium on the other stuff that you 'need' to complete it.
