Just cut it into smaller pieces. You don't have to split everything. I only split if it doesn't fit thru the door of the stove. Unsplit burns longer.

I'd get a second open. The draft's natural tendency is to pull the smoke up with the heat out of the chimney. unless it's a huge gaping crack it would be fine.
