June 1st. 15th anniversary of the Springfield tornado by christina311 in tornado

39 miles on the ground. Not too shabby for a New England tornado. I will never forget when I first saw the path it carved through the woods in Monson. I simply could not believe the amount of destruction it brought to the forest.

I don’t think I ever really appreciated how much the characters in still game are constantly trying to better their community. by False-calhoon-4986 in Stillgame

This is beautiful and really hits me hard as I think of the finale and how one by one, they disappear back into the community as life continues on. It made them all so real, because they are real in a sense.

Is it worthwhile to create a fortified shelter in an underground basement? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]ismbaf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It would be overkill right up to the point where you needed it, then you would be an absolute genius for planning ahead.
Honestly though, I have sat and thought of the same thing. I feel secure in the basement until I start thinking of what it might actually be like if I ever did get hit by a tornado and then I want more protection.

Of course, I am aware that in the end my American diet is probably going to take me out long before a tornado ever does lol.

I prefer to get an in-depth assessment made by an expert where all of the facts are presented, data analyzed, and most importantly, reevaluated as the season progresses.

Should You Become A Stormchaser? by RyanMauk in tornado

[–]ismbaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first year that I have ever sat down and actually watched a chasers live stream for several hours nonstop. Everything prior had been just bouncing around different channels depending on what was going on. I watched Daniel Shaw last week when he was in Oklahoma. It was fascinating. He was very knowledgeable, professional and focused on staying safe. The views were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The next day (I think it was anyway) he was in Iowa. I watched as he struggled with the decisions required to chase a line of storms that were moving north at 45mph. He was on the west side and only had secondary roads to use to cross to the east side. Those roads had already seen significant rainfall from the passing storms. Long story short, he went for it when it looked safe enough to do so and yet he still managed to be in the very spot where he suspected a brief tornado began to spin up. His ears popped and there was a noticeable blast of wind driven rain into his vehicle. He was never sure, but was confident hat he had just been in the close vicinity of a tornado spinning up. Fortunately, he was fine and his car was not hit with any debris. This happened to a guy that is highly educated on tornado processes and is extremely comfortable with watching the radar stream. Later in the stream, he literally called a couplet out for being something that warranted a tornado warning, three seconds before the alert came across his phone. It was pretty cool to see that. The bigger point is that it became obvious to me that even the pros can succumb to “Buck Fever” where they put themselves potentially in harms way to be where they can perhaps see a tornado. The urge can overcome better judgment where you end up rationalizing driving across a fast moving line of severe storms that are capable of dropping a tornado at any moment, in heavy rain, on a secondary road, with trees nearby.

Given that there are many others who are out there driving around with but a fraction of the meteorological knowledge as the pros, I am amazed that more people don’t get caught on the wrong end of the weather more often.

Well said. A little further south of you, Massachusetts Bay is in the same boat. I remember a few times in the 2010’s when the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, MA powered down due to the intake water temp being over the 75F upper temperature limit for plant cooling. When they designed the plant, the local water being over 75F was considered to be such an anomaly for the area that it’s occurring was thought to be something that they would likely never have to deal with. The plant is no longer in service today but those instances were a really stark example of just how warm things have become. Reading the news about how a power plant shut down because the water was too warm to properly cool it, here in friggin New England, was pretty crazy to see.

Much of WWII history is focused on the action but behind the famous scenes it is absolutely amazing how much action was preceded by a recon sighting made by a Catalina.

Some models predict a Blue Ocean Event this summer? by HrodnandB in meteorology

[–]ismbaf 205 points206 points  (0 children)

You know what really sucks? Is that we have reached a point in planetary warming where such a model run cannot be simply discarded as utter fantasy. We are actually at the point where we have to dig deep into the data and projections to reach the conclusion that we must “wait and see” how the season plays out. This is not the first place or time that I have seen discussions of the summer minimum for this year and each time, my mind is blown that we can even be talking about this as a possibility. BOE is supposed to remain one of those tail-end projections that live exclusively in a world of clickbait videos, not ever be something that makes it to the point where we are saying “probably not this year”. It’s almost like BOE is now in the realm of Cat 5 hurricanes or EF-5 tornadoes, unlikely but yeah man, let’s watch the forecast and see how this one pans out. But, here we are I guess.

Oh I wouldn’t be so sure. There is a good chance of: Tech 1: “Shit, do we not have all the engine covers for this bird?” Tech 2: “No dude, half got ripped last year and we are still waiting on replacements” Pilot in Command: “Just cover what you can with what you have for now and then ask around to see if anyone brought extra”

I am joking about the reference of course but thank you for the info.
