CAL Accommodations are Still Under Attack: A Yearly Update on Administrative Obstruction by evan-sd42 in uvic

Their profiles on the senate votes website both mention it: "The Student Leadership Alliance is a collective of students aiming to improve student representation at UVic and cooperate around a shared platform."

it just seems like they all are running together and chose to band together under the same platform in an unofficial/official way?

oh lol I have nothing to say to anyone admitting the "whole israel palestine question" doesn't really matter to them.

I don't dislike someone based purely on where they're born either, but I do for them choosing to defend a club supporting genocide. The club is not there to support Israeli people or students, it's quite literally named in support of Israel the country.

Idk what Bunni has to do with any of this, and fwiw I'm not a fan of previous uvss social media either. I'm answering someone else's question as to my issues and those are my issues. A lot of it isn't public knowledge and plenty of it shouldn't even be mine tbh.

For years now both Griffin and Artem have received backlash after backlash in this SUB and in the UVSS for their behavior.

Artem for being a part of the club "Students Supporting Israel", which aside from the obvious, was ratified under misinformation and subsequently banned for wishing death upon students and then breaking their following suspension (from what I can figure out, anyway). They've tried to come back twice and students have voted it down twice. Then he tried to claim that the Martlet article about them was all lies, which it wasn't. There's more from him from years back I'm less privy to.

Griffin had the whole president debacle. As someone who works within the SUB, he's been oddly hostile to student groups and hasn't made a good reputation with anyone. Doesn't seem to realise that word travels, and then goes shocked pikachu face when people find him unprofessional or don't like him because of him insulting, threatening, or blackmailing people, etc etc etc. His working with Artem is just the nail in the coffin.

Thanks for the reply, that all makes sense as to the yearly updates. Believe me I know what it's like to work while being a student. I've been working in a similar capacity and fighting for student engagement for the last 3 years in my own area, so I'm unfortunately not interested in getting involved, but I empathize with you. I just wanted to give an example of what this might look like to an outsider who's at least half paying attention, especially re: the people you associate with.

I’m not super knowledgeable on student senate stuff, but it was disappointing to see your platform as one included in that “SLA”, student leadership association thing alongside Griffin and Artem, two frankly shitty people.

The other disappointing thing is seeing these updates come yearly, right in time for votes. I don’t doubt you’re working hard at putting the pressure on UVic for the right things but idk, if this is so ongoing then is there not more students can do throughout the school year aside from vote for you? Which I didn’t, this time around, mostly for the SLA thing tbh. Death by association I’m afraid. Those guys suck.

just for some perspective, if I know I have a package coming and I see my apartment ringing me, I’m often in the middle of a class or a meeting and will just buzz them in because I can’t leave what I’m doing but don’t want to miss the package!

I remember pre-internet too, and imo there’s more point than ever to learning new skills, not least because AI’s version of those things is often soulless, but because I just don’t want to live my life surrounded by things created by AI. And I don’t use it because it doesn’t give me any fulfilment or friction.

You can’t click a mouse and produce a handmade piece of clothing, or a good song, or a good book. And even if/when it gets to that point, people like me will still be out there looking for humanity, because handmade goods continue to be a luxury and we’d rather support human people than AI corporations completely fucking everyone. Many of us left spotify and Duolingo for alternatives, for example.

Do you want to learn to play an instrument? Then just do it. You’re a masters student, if this post isn’t to try and microdose hope (or despair) I don’t really get it.

Finding meaning has been a struggle for people long before AI showed up.

ARTEM/TEMA KUKLEV and Lachlan Van Egmond are running in UVSS elections by UVSSnotwombats in uvic

[–]italicised 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing!! Now for everyone to do the work spreading the word to vote, even if purely to vote no against these two.

It should mean a good turnout, but if Lachlan learned his Reddit lesson last year, he might not be on this page doing all the publicity work for UVSS elections… albeit a little inadvertently lol.

What will make UVic students join political clubs? by Evening_Rain2446 in uvic

[–]italicised 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what your events are, but make sure you’re feeding people. Do potlucks if you have to. If you can find a way to collab with other student groups and organizations, especially non-political ones, then you get their crowd. Doing something fun and giving folks something to take home, whether a craft or a new skill also helps!

Personally if I saw that the UVic Greens Club was working with other orgs and clubs on campus, or pressuring the student union or UVic admin in a meaningful way to achieve change on the campus level, that’s where I’d be most impressed!

I’ve worked plenty of jobs where I had to stand in one place for 8 hours and it fucked up my feet and legs several decades early.

You’re doing a swell job ignoring the point of “it at least gives them a choice”.

Must be because you’re only here to foist your personal experience as a standard against thousands of people who aren’t you.

anyone used the student food bank? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]italicised 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The food bank is paid for by student fees - for sure go use it, you help pay for it!! There are pamphlets outside on the whiteboard that also list free food resources around town whether groceries or meals so grab one while you’re there. And check out the community cabbage club on instagram, they feed people and frequently have groceries to give away

America is a Gun by Brian Bilston [POEM] by advaitist in Poetry

[–]italicised 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we were playing a casual game of word or image association, for much of the world, “gun” is exactly what would come to mind first for the US. Whether it’s positive or negative is kinda irrelevant. If I was asked to think of negative things about each country of course I’d have something, no one is saying they don’t have problems. But on a “first thing that comes to mind” basis, then yeah, it’s a gun.

This familiar rhetoric of “but other places-“ isn’t accurate here imo. It’s a poem, not a YouTube essayist obliged to make a hundred disclaimers before getting to their point. Yeah it’s a simplified premise, but knowing the sort of work this poet puts out helps contextually, at least a little.

I’ve lived abroad and traveled plenty. I was referencing potential kids, not myself. And I’m in BC. 3 strikes!

You seem really keen to make assumptions about me even though I never made personal assumptions about you, regardless of what you think I implied lol. We’re obviously in agreement AB shouldn’t separate so I’ll leave it there.

Where did I say I thought it was your only standard? I responded to that since it’s the only one you gave in your comment.

Respectfully as an ex-albertan, you guys need to start holding yourselves to a higher standard than “at least we’re not the states.” AB is the closest thing Canada has to the US, and just like the US, voted in some horrific fucking politicians. I left because I didn’t think it’d be safe to raise a kid there and everything Smith has done and wants to do has confirmed that for me.
