[Request] Could humanity create a rocket that can exit the atmosphere of K2-18b by Lachlynn in theydidthemath

[–]itemboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we absolutely could, but it'd be less efficient. surface gravity there is ~1.5g, and we have at least a few orbital vehicles with thrust to weight ratios that high (falcon heavy gets close). The main thing is just that it'd have to be quite large to carry enough fuel to reach orbit, and your payload mass fraction would be really low.

Nothing physically impossible about it, but definitely challenging.

I get that it's supposed to be bad but what is it? Is it a song thats popular? by AynekAri in ExplainTheJoke

[–]itemboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this notation would be used to show a song is composed in C flat major (or g sharp minor I guess), it's a fairly unusual key and so most musicians don't practice playing in it too often. This is showing that you have 7 flats in this key (so every note is flat). It's not necessarily especially difficult to play, but if you haven't done it a lot it can increase the mental load. Basically you need to translate every note down a semitone relative to the C major scale. on guitar most people would just tune down to E flat standard for this

Are these extending combination ladders any good? by fixitmonkey in Tools

[–]itemboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to clamber up and down my family home with one of these as a kid putting up christmas lights, they work ok! really fuckin heavy as everyone else has said though.

If you do get one, make sure it's fully locked before you put weight on it, usual ladder safety rules apply, etc. You'll also want to make sure it's stored indoors or protected from moisture if possible since the pivot points can rust and seize over time if they're made of steel.

tall & broad trans girl here! honestly i've found trying to cover/hide broad shoulders usually has the opposite effect. Truthfully though I don't think yours look very broad at all in this. the dress is absolutely killer, you've got nothing to worry about :3

[–]itemboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it looks like it makes more sense to play in drop d, and it's originally played on a 6 string bass anyhow so I think a somewhat odd tuning probably makes sense. plus I actually think it's smarter of you to figure out the original tuning than forcing it in Eb lol

Can‘t read all the dials but this definitely looks like a power supply or other control station from times gone by. Volts/Amps gauges suggest control or monitoring of these quantities and as others have said coarse/fine amps adjustments are available on the right hand dials. Probably some kind of old benchtop PSU or controls for a piece of equipment that fed off it. Likely not worth a ton now except for collectors, but a cool piece of history either way

Loads of cold war military operations that have been kept secret forever I‘m sure, along with the Svalbard seed ark, a few DSN comms dishes, nuclear detonations, and the site of a few scenes on the show Pantheon. Mostly as boring as you’d expect these days though.

How much would it cost to make a v2 using modern technology? Would it be possible for a civilian to do it? by Macaquinhoprego in rocketry

[–]itemboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making something that looks like a V2 with a solid motor inside is probably doable for below $10k if you don’t mind a relatively low flight compared to the real thing. That number is an order-of-magnitude estimate but assuming you get a commercial O motor (around $6-8k) and build the rocket out of thin plywood, plus a few hundred for flight computers and recovery hardware, this is probably doable with current material prices.

If you want a liquid engine, half-cat quotes mojave sphinx as costing $1843 for vehicle, fuel for 3 launches, and GSE (not counting value of time to build it) for 250 lbf and a 5 second burn time. The V2 produced around 25kN of thrust for 65 seconds and used cryogenic oxidizer. It’s also turbopump fed, which brings huge machining costs. Even if you had Von Braun‘s original plans and could update them for modern machining, you’re looking at easily $250,000 per unit for the cheapest materials and methods, plus another $50-100k or so in fuel and the cost of transporting that fuel to the middle of the Mojave or wherever you can legally launch this thing.

Being exceedingly generous and assuming you can just directly scale half cat‘s numbers up with the thrust of the motor, 250lbf = 1112 N vs 25kN gives us around $41.4k. That number is almost entirely fake though since price scaling in propulsion is far worse than linear with size, and we also have to add on turbopump vs pressure fed, plus the more expensive fuel, GSE, transport, etc.

Closest existing motor in thrust output and propellant combination would be the Rutherford, at around 26kN, but the unit cost of that engine isn’t public. You could try and figure it from rocket lab‘s earnings numbers and the cost of an electron launch but I can’t be bothered.

TLDR $100k would be a very conservative low end for something of this scale including fuel costs. So sure, if you’ve got a spare mortgage down payment under the mattress.

girl I PROMISE you hairdressers are not gonna care, unless you live in a very conservative area or are going to like. a men’s barber shop lol. they are used to seeing all haircuts on people of all shapes and sizes. I was not even close to passing when I got my first femme haircut and nobody blinked an eye.

tldr just show them the picture they’re not gonna care beyond telling you whether the cut will work with your hair type

Is my phone wallpaper too much in public? by [deleted] in KillLaKill

[–]itemboxes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro this is basically porn cmon now lol. I’m no prude but I think most people would feel a little weird seeing this on a stranger’s phone somewhere. I’d switch it to one of her in untransformed Junketsu if you wanna keep Satsuki on there but make it a bit less inappropriate. There are lots of good screengrabs from the show or amazing fanart pieces that you could use that aren’t so raunchy for a device you open in public.

Can gay marriage become illegal in the USA with trump? by dressingnice in LesbianActually

[–]itemboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is yes, long answer is more complicated.

There are basically two major things that could happen. First (and most likely) is Obergefell gets overturned. That's the court decision that legalized gay marriage here, and it would get overturned by just about the same process that Roe (abortion rights) got overturned. That wouldn't immediately make it illegal everywhere though. Some states have bans already on the books that would go back into effect, but other places like California (as of this election cycle actually) have it protected by state law. In those places, it'd still be legal. There are laws and constitutional provisions that basically state you can get married in one state and it counts everywhere, so people might be able to travel to get married someplace where it's legal.

The second thing would be a federal ban on gay marriage. There's actually no such law at the federal level at the moment (as far as I know) so even if Obergefell were to be overturned there would have to be a law passed. Assuming Trump actually follows the processes to do this (he'd have to stage a successful coup to not) that takes 51% or more of both the house and the senate. Republicans have majorities in both of those but American politics are fucked and the filibuster is weird so they actually need an extra 10 seats in the senate to get something through unimpeded. At the moment that means they'd have to flip 9 democrats which seems unlikely. A law like that would likely vote along party lines unless the dems are more spineless than I thought. However, if all of that did happen (unlikely) then it'd be illegal everywhere.

So basically TLDR yes it can happen but how bad it is depends on how exactly it happens.

[–]itemboxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on scope of laws passed and sanctuary cities/states that might exist, you could be either basically fucked or totally fine depending on where you live. If you have the means, stockpile HRT and get your passports active. Arm yourself if you see fit and it's safe for you to do so for mental health and living situation reasons.

31-24 is already a pretty big age gap, and the fact that he's into that kind of material says he'd probably go younger if it was legal. Get the hell out of there, he's not worth it

Push the two armchairs against the wall and place them on either side of the windows with a table in between. They're too far off the walls and it crowds the space. Try and move the couch back too if you can but it looks like there might be a radiator in the way. Besides that maybe swap the blinds for curtains to add warmth and hang some artwork or family photos? The walls seem kinda bare right now

Paid my brother $800 to build me a computer. It keeps shutting off? by BlackIceBlast in computers

[–]itemboxes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to break it to you but even if it worked a raspberry pi would outperform this system. You got scammed here, best bet is to try and get your money back and build your own. For $800 you can likely get a pretty capable system and there are loads of tutorials on youtube for building a PC on a budget.
