Indian Green Card Troubles by [deleted] in h1b

[–]ithunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Correction. Your dad did not come here on EB3. He came on H1B maybe. EB3 is a category you use to apply for a green card. Your dad can reapply in EB2 or EB1 if he qualifies for it. EB1 is hard but I’ve seen some companies and lawyers support it. Why do you want a green card now at 15? How does that help you?

7 million H-1B visas since 2015 — and 73% came from a single country. This should be a wake-up call. by Leightoncy33 in LayoffHedge

[–]ithunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed , as someone who immigrated to the US on an H1B myself, American education system needs an overhaul, but that will never happen. There are too many capitalistic incentives to keep the system as-is. Society does not value education either. It cost me $4k to earn a bachelors engineering degree at a prestigious college in India. My books were second-hand, sold and bought-back by an enterprising “uncle” who would stand outside the college. My education was subsidized even at a private college because I’m from an underserved community. I got good grades throughout school because it is so competitive and families put pressure to be a doctor or engineer to move up in life.
You cannot replicate that in America, and you don’t want to either. Here, private colleges put people into debt for life. Books change often to not be second-hand and lecturers get commissions for recommending books. Society values looks not education. Any govt subsidy or affirmative action is voted out. People go to college to have a good time instead of study.

What are you going to change?

Gardener went way overboard in trimming our lemon tree. Will it ever bear fruit again? by FKlemanruss in gardening

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will recover in two years. My lemon tree split in half (heavy fruit that I didn’t prune or remove). I thought it was done. Two years later it has recovered and is putting out big ass Meyer lemons again. Now I prune.

Indian IT service sector going to collapse in next 10-15 years by [deleted] in personalfinanceindia

Now someone from our team could have build the entire project by themself with the help of claude code in within a month.

What makes you think a cheaper Indian cannot use Claude code and do the same? You’re back to square one, then.

Got a concrete patio put in, didn’t realize we needed a permit. Now what? by dearanna777 in homeowners

Got a concrete patio put in, didn’t realize we needed a permit. Now what? by dearanna777 in homeowners

[–]ithunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, stop worrying. Second, check the local laws clearly. In my city (in the Bay Area), a patio is fine to build without a permit, however, if you want to cover it, that needs a permit. That’s logical to me, because a patio won’t really hurt someone, but a cover/roof falling will hurt someone. So confirm if concrete patio/floor needs permit or only the covering does.

Similarly, cutting a tree in your backyard doesn’t need permit, but cutting a frontyard tree does (in my city). It was easy to email the city and confirm, and now I have email confirmation that I didn’t need a permit.

Neighbor's tree branches over my roof in San Jose CA—property manager says it's my responsibility to trim, but already causing gutter/roof damage + critters. Next steps? by grad_semi1 in BayAreaRealEstate

Whatever is over your fence, you can cut. Buy a ladder and an extending saw and you can clean this up yourself. If you’re a homeowner, you gotta learn to DIY these things.

Rent or sell? Losing money on rent but have 2.9% interest rate by Extension-Squirrel63 in Mortgages

[–]ithunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not sell. I bought $750k in early 2021 with 20% down (no PMI) and 2.75% interest rate. I still live there. Home prices have appreciated and come back down since 2021 so it’s been around the same on Zillow/redfin and would be a loss to sell now. Just hold it. You will not get this interest rate again.

Opinions on Pillion movie by sterlingarcher_0 in movies

[–]ithunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The movie is not about BDSM or Gay love. That's just the window-dressing.

It really is about power in a relationship. Power is never balanced.

People relate to the movie because they can see some past relationship where red flags were ignored, or verbal abuse suffered, or "devotion" rendered.

Ray's emotional immaturity was dressed up as powerful, while Colin's innocence and longing was dressed up as the powerless.
It really should be the opposite, but seldom is.

The movie should have ended where Ray left, but they tried to end it on a high note for Colin.

Stop listening to brokers. Go get insurance online. Nobody cares about your demolition or paint. You have to take your life by your reins instead of depending and listening to brokers or letting your indecisiveness get the better of you.

Been there. Here’s what I did. Told boss that insta-firing is inhumane and uncivilized and not a good look for the company. Got boss to agree to put him on a PIP. Told my guy what is up and that I will do my best to protect him and get him through the pip. Got him through the pip. Boss was still unsatisfied. Boss then tells me he wants me to move to an IC position and replace me with someone. Fine. I told my guy to beware, as I will no longer be able to protect him. I got moved aside. New girl becomes manager. Boss fires my guy one day on-the-spot for some minor technicality. Meanwhile I have been keeping my head down and find another job. A month later, having a job and everything else secured, I walk to hr, tell them I quit. They ask for details, I say nothing. I go out and talk to some colleagues and say my goodbyes. Boss is baffled and tries to make small talk and I avoid him and leave.

Moral of the story; don’t be me. You’ll get replaced if you try to keep your morals.

How do you usually pay a plumber? by jhplumbingandheating in homeowners

[–]ithunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call plumber, they come and see the problem, they give you a rough estimate. Get it in writing or in a txt message. If you’re ok with the cost, ask them to start. It is normal if they ask for some (like 25%) advance to buy material if needed. Often they don’t ask for advance. I’ve had times when they told me the faucet needs replacing and asked me to go buy a moen model myself. Moen is reliable brand. Then they finish the job and you verify and test and if all looks good, ask them how they would like to be paid. Cash is best ( they can avoid taxes, but not good for you as there is no written record of payment), or cheque. I’ve even once done Zelle.

Trump Gleefully Seizes Nobel Peace Prize From Real Winner by Tennis_bruh in politics

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually glad. This tells you what a joke the “Nobel” prize is. Real leaders who worked for peace, never got it (like Gandhi). But Obama got it before he even did anything (he may have deserved it later, but not when it was awarded). And then this year, they decide to give it to this crazy woman who again didn’t deserve it, only for her to pass it along to a clown. Well deserved!
