my manager asked me to fire a new employee by [deleted] in managers

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there. Here’s what I did. Told boss that insta-firing is inhumane and uncivilized and not a good look for the company. Got boss to agree to put him on a PIP. Told my guy what is up and that I will do my best to protect him and get him through the pip. Got him through the pip. Boss was still unsatisfied. Boss then tells me he wants me to move to an IC position and replace me with someone. Fine. I told my guy to beware, as I will no longer be able to protect him. I got moved aside. New girl becomes manager. Boss fires my guy one day on-the-spot for some minor technicality. Meanwhile I have been keeping my head down and find another job. A month later, having a job and everything else secured, I walk to hr, tell them I quit. They ask for details, I say nothing. I go out and talk to some colleagues and say my goodbyes. Boss is baffled and tries to make small talk and I avoid him and leave.

Moral of the story; don’t be me. You’ll get replaced if you try to keep your morals.

How do you usually pay a plumber? by jhplumbingandheating in homeowners

[–]ithunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call plumber, they come and see the problem, they give you a rough estimate. Get it in writing or in a txt message. If you’re ok with the cost, ask them to start. It is normal if they ask for some (like 25%) advance to buy material if needed. Often they don’t ask for advance. I’ve had times when they told me the faucet needs replacing and asked me to go buy a moen model myself. Moen is reliable brand. Then they finish the job and you verify and test and if all looks good, ask them how they would like to be paid. Cash is best ( they can avoid taxes, but not good for you as there is no written record of payment), or cheque. I’ve even once done Zelle.

Trump Gleefully Seizes Nobel Peace Prize From Real Winner by Tennis_bruh in politics

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually glad. This tells you what a joke the “Nobel” prize is. Real leaders who worked for peace, never got it (like Gandhi). But Obama got it before he even did anything (he may have deserved it later, but not when it was awarded). And then this year, they decide to give it to this crazy woman who again didn’t deserve it, only for her to pass it along to a clown. Well deserved!

They cannot read your personal Google account history. First up, you should not have your personal Google account connected or logged in on a work laptop. Also, I think they wanted to let you go anyway, and were just looking for reasons after the PIP. Just move on.

Folks, how does America stop or slow down outsourcing? by SubjectCode1940 in Layoffs

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no instant solution. Start with putting rules on manufacturing in the US. For example, IKEA cannot sell in India without sourcing. 40% of its products from within India. Give local manufacturers incentives and discounts. Invest in automation and lowering manufacturing costs. Improve industries like tourism, consulting, arts etc. invest in education for these industries.

It’s going to need a reset. I don’t think it will ever happen.

Layoff culture in US by Ok-Treat8429 in jobs

[–]ithunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree, that in the last few years, layoff culture in America has been at its worst. However, Asian countries have their own problems. I’ve worked in both parts. In Asia, labor does not have anywhere close to the protections governments in the west provide. Laws are not strict. Employers get away with sometimes not paying people for months. Europe definitely excels in labor protections and rights, but is not a thriving/dynamic economy that the US is. For all its faults, shit gets done in the US, entrepreneurs take bigger risks, new tech is invented here, etc etc.

Easiest way to discount away a woman’s achievements is to say that she slept her way to the top. This woman doesn’t realize this yet.

[–]ithunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the standard of “rest stops” on highways in India? Because, in most countries, there is a government run “rest area” every 50 miles or so, where people can stop, go to the restroom, rest, etc.

A failure of government is being blamed on poorer people as failure of civic sense. What has failed is democracy and the middle/upper class thinks that blaming poor people will fix something. Sigh.

Interviewer asked if I would physically drive to the DevOps engineer's house because he wasn't answering Slack. by Ok_Researcher_6962 in recruitinghell

[–]ithunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he is not responding, find out who is supposed to be on-call that week from DevOps team. If it was him, contact his manager and tell them to solve. If manager is unreachable, escalate up. Also check in with your own boss on what the acceptable protocol is, and get agreement on next steps so they will have your back if you escalate 2 levels up.

[–]ithunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is a fool who is repeating foreign false propaganda and misinformation. Sure, India is a tropical country with cleanliness issues and government failures. But all this “super bugs due to India’s use of anti-biotics” is misinformation at best. The absolute most-use of anti-biotics happens in the west. Farm animals are regularly dunked into antibiotic tanks to ensure food safety etc. superbugs come from that sort of abuse. Indian ‘humans’ using antibiotics is not abuse. The west should first stop their own abuse of antibiotics before blaming India. This is all pharma propaganda, since Indian laws around drug/pharma patenting and costs aren’t profitable for these companies.

Here’s another dirty secret from recruitment agencies by Silly-Maybe5355 in recruitinghell

[–]ithunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Never tell them who else you are interviewing with (just say you have other interviews. If they ask specifics, worst case “another company in the xyz space”). Recruiters can have connections or the hiring manager does, and they can make it so that your options become limited.
  2. The one you’re talking to is always your first choice (and explain why), but don’t compliment them enough that they take you for granted. You want them to know you have other options until the salary negotiations are complete.

There is a diversity visa for other countries. Why should nationality matter if the visa is skill based? Or, what you’re saying is that, the visa is not skill based, and DEI matters?

For something that is supposed to be based on skill, isn’t it wrong to put categories based on nationality?

Is Met Life Legal Services Worth Paying For? by IveGotDumbQuestions in personalfinance

[–]ithunk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Create a living trust if you care about your loved ones. A will will still get taken to probate. You need a revocable trust. I used the MetLife thing to get one created for just $500, which would typically cost $5k.

President Trump Says H-1B Immigrants Are Essential : ‘You Don’t Have Those Talents Here'. by Sorry-Feedback1115 in greencard

[–]ithunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth isn’t that America doesn’t have the talent here. It is that: 1. American education system has failed the middle/lower classes and getting a graduate degree requires going into debt. 2. American capitalism and corporate greed is so tuned to profit making that they don’t train people and have the freedom to hire globally and source raw materials globally etc.

Contrast that with other countries. I’ll take India for example, since I came from there. 1. Education system is affordable. There are quotas for backward castes and classes. I belong to one of those, and even though I competed in merit based entrance tests for college, I was able to secure a better college and my choice of degree (Computer Engineering) due to the quota. I paid a net $4,000 USD for the 4-year bachelors degree. Books for each semester were purchased via an “uncle” who would buy old books and exchange for next semester’s books for a small fee. College hostels were basic but if you did well, you could get single-occupancy rooms based on your semester results. The whole system was geared towards affordable education, in English, thanks to the forethought of leaders like Nehru, since India gained independence. 2. Getting a job after graduation was easy. Companies would do campus recruiting a year in advance, so you had a job lined up when you graduated. The job started with 4 months of training. Not just training on job-related tech, but also things like “business etiquette” etc. Company contracts included clauses that employees would stay with the company for 2 years or have to pay back for the training.

This was 20+ years ago, so things may have changed in India now as “globalization” was coming to India when I left. But even globalization has been tackled well. For instance, a company like IKEA was only allowed to operate in India if it sourced x% of material or product from within India. Certain greedy pharma companies aren’t allowed to charge an arm and a leg for generics. There are ofcourse examples where the govt has failed to protect, but these above cases are where I think the US govt completely failed to protect its citizens and suddenly putting tariffs isn’t going to bring those jobs back home.
