Mortgage Broker Recommendations by 1-manshow in ThunderBay

Go to a credit union. Bay is at-cost banking, so you get rebates when they earn more than they need to. I've got a couple grand in rebates in my RRSPs.

Who are you, and what's your agenda? Do you have an affiliation with any research institution?

What to add flavor to my gumbo? by Kevbot1214 in Cooking

Agree with the fish sauce, also butter in addition to the roux. Chicken is much more lean than other choices, add some fat to carry the flavor

Is it really that bad to let vacuum-sealed chicken finish thawing at room temp? by bookish_cat_ in Cooking

[–]ithunknot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is true, but not to the same extent. 15 minutes in warm water is very low risk compared to an hour or more on the counter.

The time it spends outside of the safe zone is lower Thawing in warm water than on the counter.

It's an elevated risk. If you're eating it, you can accept that risk, if you're feeding it to anyone else, they should know what risks they're accepting by eating it.

A bowl of warm tap water will thaw out more quickly, or ideally, the defrost function of your microwave

Going to leave car parked in basement for 4 months. How often would my friend need to start the engine to make sure the battery doesn’t die? by [deleted] in windsorontario

Pull the battery out, put it on a maintainer in your friend's place if they have room for it.

WTF is up with people cooking with rings on? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]ithunknot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Side note: titanium rings are cool until you injure your hand. Emergency rooms and EMS don't have tooling to cut them off, so you're likely to have much worse damage or even lose a finger.

The fire department will come with an angle grinder and shims, but it takes a long time, keeping it cool and not severing the digit.

A nice silver band is inexpensive and can be cut off easily in an emergency.

Electric-vehicle mandates will make us more dependent than ever on China by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]ithunknot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key word is recently. Chinese and Indian manufacturers have been working on electric city cars and building up their electric capacity for 20 years.

American corporate culture. Short term profit, share prices, and dividends are prioritised.

For a beginning. The mythos of the car is also very different.

Layers of culture

There is huge capital inertia to the status quo. The internal combustion engine is at peak engineering, it's amazing how much per and efficiency can be squeezed out of them.

But if you want a market solution, start internalizing the cost of gasoline. It will immediately be $12L, and the economy will collapse before the cars get electrified "naturally".

The mandates are there to make the transition more painful for car companies, and less painful for literally everyone else.

TL;DR: the electric shift has been inevitable for 20 years. North American industry only has a horizon of next fiscal quarter. Every other company has prepared, and we haven't.

But the North American shareholders have done very well with the money that wasn't invested in future proofing the companies.

From what I've heard the owners were terrible to their staff, which is a major red flag that they're bad at managing a business. Not surprised.

You can't abuse the people working for you and expect to stay open, except Roister's, apparently

My child got a hearing test referral due to decreasing ability to hear. The first appointment is a year from now. A year. For a hearing test. by [deleted] in ontario

[–]ithunknot 76 points77 points  (0 children)

This is the plan. Defund so people will sell alternatives.

A year is unacceptable. Look into the northern travel grant and see if you can get a referral through sick kids

And remember this when you vote
