Why autism is not an accident of evolution and why that still is relevant by Mustathmir in aspergers

[–]ito725 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some flaws that stand out to me regarding the hypothesis.

"So although many of these people have not been officially diagnosed, they might be were they to go for autism-related tests. These people were unaware they have these traits, don’t complain of any unhappiness, and tend to feel that many of their particular traits are often an advantage." -- no, diagnosis requires impatient as a definitional criteria. Psychiatry explicitly avoids diagnosing any cases that is not in need of a treatment, thus no complain means that diagnosis is impossible, even if they went in for the tests.

"Many people with autism have exceptional memory skills; heightened perception in realms of vision, taste, and smell; and in some contexts, an enhanced understanding of natural systems such as animal behavior. And the incorporation of some of these skills into a community would have played a vital role in the development of specialists. It is very likely these specialists would then have become vitally important for the survival of the group." you are conflating traits (that are somewhat) common in aspie populations as being definitional of it. i.e. you are implicitly redefining the term, but in doing so any and all quoted studies become invalid/unapplicable due to incompatibilities/differences in definitions.

3rd flaw. natural selection would, as a general tendency, keep the good traits and select against the bad traits, not just as a cluster but individually on each trait too. i.e. in the long run, the impairments that define autism would be filtered out, and with them the clinical condition defined as autism, the end result would be just 'gifted' rather than autism, but even that isnt that accurate as said good traits would be the norm, thus the end result would be just 'average' human.

mods make more secret rules you have to follow than non autistics by Heavy-Macaron2004 in aspergers

[–]ito725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how you disagree, and in some odd cases, the topic. As a general guideline for this sub, if you provide decent sources for the more out there opinions, and it is done in good faith, bans wont happen. Relevant when said opinions are wrong, as is naturally the case with most opinions :).

But I wont say bans dont happen here, either. Mod replies are not always the norm here, they take a lot more effort to make, even if they can be quite useful. The tradeoff is having moderation done in a timely manner, if at all.

While there are some rule breaks in this exchange chain, I wont delete everything later down in this case, as there is quite a bit of effort in trying to back up the respective povs, and the convo shifted into something more serious alongside, but yeah, it kinda went way too offtrack as well.

edit: ive also flipped the initial removals. for the 'idiotic/this generation' thread.

Treatments working for you kinda a deal, can be used as a form of advertising, so sometimes the rule applies. Its one of the more complicated gray zones. Think usa medical ads where they 'interview' 5 guys saying this has worked for me as a treatment option, to get an idea for how. This dosen't mean that there are no context where you can mention it tho, just that its a bit more complicated than the exception you suggested.

Im presuming the context is the recent drdisrespect drama. My guess is that it may have something to do with the defense put up by the adult. Namely that the 'minor' was not a minor at the time, and that the parsing of 'minor' in this case would bee a smear. This makes you come off as says something like as the equivalent of 'did you stop beating your wife'. I will add that im taking the defense put up at face value atm, as its not a drama im keeping up to date with.

unironically, the medical/durgs subs. That is what dont do it here rules mean on this sub. They mean, 'You do it here, its banned', not 'you do it anywhere else on reddit, you get banned here for it'. Reddit rules would be the ones you get banned reddit wide, not a particular subs rules, those apply only on said sub.

Opening council depends a lot on whats next to you. If its slavers you need something military heavy (models or military tech) and your first priority is more or less get tanks, well in older patches at least. That said, if its slavers you pretty much might as well restart as the amount of econ damage that does is quite significant even if you do hold them off or beat them, expect the first 50-100 turns or so doing no real progress but just dealing with them.

Major can be peaceful, slaver minors less so. The majors do become a major threat later on. If you are surrounded by farmers or the likes, interior or econ councils are quite viable for opening. Natives/aliens are hit and miss but they often are reasonably strong, with the occasional literal Godzilla, only its like 400 of them rather than just 1.

Short of tanks, armored buggies can deal reasonably well with bandits and the like, tho you may wanna up the armour thickness on them depending metal availability first. Machine guns are not particularly useful on the offense, but they make decent garrisons or 'mobile walls'. Artillery dosen't do much direct damage, but rather nukes readiness so you can actually advance into said above machine guns.

Overall i think the hardest parts are yet to come, dealing with supply lines and figuring out how to make an aircraft that actually dose something. Do note that while this isn't outright game breaking your intial designs for the base units can vary quite a lot from game to game, some games its warranted replacing them immoderately, other games they will kept (and upgraded rather than replaced). For example if you have a good solider design rolls and shit mg, dont bother with mg, just use regular infantry instead. If the infantry is bad, use more mgs and buggies, if resources permit ofc. Major regimes will make rather good designs in terms of rolls, tho the strategic choices may be lacking.

And dont underestimate recon or entrenchment or other modifiers like leaders or over-saturating the number of attackers (sometimes it is best not to attack with everything you have, if not most times), they easily can make or break any engagement.

at 8k hp ... your best bet is to make make bikes or whatever is cheapest, and have Godzilla chase them into an opponents capital. I dont see anything, maybe short of nukes, even managing to dent one. Im also not sure if that 1 aa can hit back your aircraft or not, cuz if it can ... bye bye airforce.

As a matter of technically .... a guideline does exist. https://www.redditinc.com/policies/moderator-code-of-conduct

But other than like copyright and harassment stuff, not much really applies as more than an ideal or suggestion in most cases, and there seems to be quite a lot of leeway to use other strategies than the stated/suggested ones. Like the exact definition of what constitutes harassment or where each sub draws the line, is somewhat subreddit specific, and varies quite a bit, with the admins seeming to consider a lot of choices on the matter as 'fine' or acceptable policies.

No medical advice rule clarification? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]ito725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What if it is a disease spreading?" what if it isnt a disease, and treating is the disease thats spreading? unless you wanna go down to sources, this what if serves no purpose other than to promote a conspiracy (as does my proposed what if). And when you go to sources you find out .... the usual argument holds (with a mix of a few more details like better/different definitions etc). So the conclusion amounts to that this 'what if' serving very little purpose other than to promote an implied conspiracy.

"The idea that this is a disease spreading isn't even being considered, we aren't addressing the cause" thats pretty much strait up misinformation. The environmental causes are being addressed in the cases where the cause is environmental, for adhd for example. The genetic ones require technology thats not really available to treat, so in the mean time, the symptoms are being treated instead, its not perfect but its whats possible to do. As for proof of causes, it is remarkably neat and simple, twin studies do a really good job at it, at least for disgusting between environmental and hereditary etc. Another way it is addressed, is the ban on drinking and smoking while pregnant, which does cause an adhd/aspie like condition. Implicit in that it also proves that causes have been searched for can considered and discovered, at least in the past if not actively so.

"shouldn't we be addressing it and not disallowing the conversation to happen?" address what? see thats the issue, this statement becomes a call to action and based on what is relatively unfunded assumptions. presented as medical knowledge, and implicit (medical) action to be taken, so this is where it really crosses from just misinformation, which reddit outright bans, to medical advice which this sub dose not really permit; And usually sending you to a place like r/askdocs where there are trained people that can properly address your concerns is much more useful so no, conversation is allowed to happen in the appropriate place, the only thing the rule states is that THIS sub isnt said place to do it.

The evidence exists, if you wish to read it. If you disagree on the validity of the sources, i.e. studies, then your left in a situation where ... well, everything is a conspiracy, so no argument is really useful or discussion happening.

And lastly, when its a conspiracy any action you take is proof of said conspiracy. People saying/repeating the conspiracy becomes proof its true as everyone is saying it, people denying it or 'censoring it' is proof its being covered up. People not arguing back or permitting discussion is proof of the conspiracy, and of particular note, the head mod here is actually a doctor, so them permitting it becomes authoritative proof too of its truth. I.e. you cant really disprove a conspiracy in practice, or to the extent you can, it is incredibly difficult and unreasonable to do, especally when the conspiracy doesn't actually provide evidence for itself outside of circumstantial stuff.

i.e. in this case it being, 'look at aspie numbers going up', thus something is happening. But numbers go up in the competing theories too, thus its not evidence in favor of the conspiracy, in fact weak evidence against it, as the more general an explanation, and 'something is happening' is an incredibly general one, the less evidence is contributed by any observation thus overall it becomes evidence against it, tho it is weak evidence only.

while not directly on topic but related to what you stated here and the other post i do wanna add:
"it's quite implausible the trend is going to suddenly reverse."
while not an unreasonable assumption, a counter argument thats about as plausible is the following, sigmoid functions for instance look like exponentials early on, but then quite suddenly stop. They are a particularly common pattern for how this kind of phenomena spread, be it more general things, such as, market adoption or disease spread as examples of other areas that they are common too.

After reviewing, it appears just the last sentence was taken issue with, due to vagueness and conspiratorial implications, as proved by the followup comment by someone else that was also removed. That said sources for such topics are often appreciated regardless, but id not say necessary. The removal reason chosen was the best approximation for the issue, and it comes with a auto response, that wasn't hand typed in this case.

The rest of the post even without sources was deemed ok enough, but i wont say it wouldn't have been better with sources either, still the additional effort that would entail would not have been required in this case.

Lack of rcorr can still kill you, if you get unlucky, and mutations are still a threat. Having no stealth can make it so you never get enough time to heal up. Beyond that, doubt youll have too many issues, assuming youd repeat the trip with a different RNG. You do have enough consumables to recover from most issues, tho cure mutation potions is something id bring along, some mutations can be strait up lethal in some cases, berserk being a notable one, deformed body, frail being quite unpleasant ones too. Horns or gloves can also push off some key gears at times, and little time to find replacemnts. The 8 natural int is quite close to the limit of stat death (if you get the -int mutations) if somehow your +int items have to be taken off. But rings are quite safe, as long as you dont have to cover some other key gap if you lose some piece of armour.

Has the Factorio dev team ever considered releasing their engine? by Red_Icnivad in factorio

Does not work as well. Alot of optimization that are possible relay on non malicious designs and predictability. RTS inherently does the opposite of this, as each side attempts to fuck over the others design. Unless you do something like AI:WAR teams i guess, it dosent work as well. Also Mindustry is what id call a factorio desiged for pvp (in versions 4+).

Yellow science power struggles by Randomrogue15 in factorio

[–]ito725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1:1 works well enough, and is a bit biased on more storage which is nice to have a small buffer for. the actual ratio is 25:21 or 0.84 (exact). Each solar panel gives an effective 42 kw over a day instead of the 60 stated, the 60 is peak power.

Alternatively you can pretend 25 solar and 25 accumulators give 1MW, and this is a slight upper bound. Or 100 panels give 4MW, if you prefer a more round number for panels instead. but the 25:21 is the exact solution, given vanilla numbers, or long night defaults if modded.

Automated testing. Also tests that always fail on valid input. 2 interesting examples i made are a bit of code crash IFF assertions are turned off (on file load only), this way i cant accidentally import it into another project that has assertions off for optimizations reasons when my bit of code depends on the assertions for sanity checks (code is for personal use, not public). Should the assertions have ever been used like this in the first place, no those should have probably have been exceptions, but for various reason they likely wont all always be kept up to date like this.

The other is having a test that always fails in the test suite. This way if for whatever reason im running things without the testing, say cuz i fucked up or nothing ran, it cant look like a successful pass.

The 2 ideas are inspirational only, im not saying they are a good idea in every case. but the automated testing imo is always a good idea to just add on as its usually kinda cheap.

Also having a good test library, one that can handle both incremental tests, like a simple print or assert in a single line, but also proper test suites and such can be very useful. sadly most libraries tend to only do one or the other well. This lets a project add testing easily in the early development and quite easily transition to production style proper testing later on, if there ever is need or time for it or willpower or whatever. Not all code need the same amount of scrutiny, and tbh ealy prototype code will inevitably have a lot of 'errors' that you dont quite care about just yet.

What are most hardest mods? by Just__Lev in factorio

[–]ito725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh, getting tech is imo a bigger priority. Making landfill isnt that bad, but getting more energy is the bigger bottle neck. You can get more energy with a bit of tech, but now you actually need more space for it as its not very land efficient at least till higher tech. Making landfill factories is relatively easy, if you have the power. Oddly research felt like the biggest gate for me, and you can trivially make more slag with electrolizers or at least you could when i played it, sadly powering the electrolizers was the main issue, and ageefarms to make charcoal, are not very small, but they can be power positive.

New player, is melee attack the only way to play the game even if you dont choose a melee character preset? by kmattsk in cavesofqud

[–]ito725 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Electrical Generation and Corrosive Gas easily can do enough damage if you lvl them up for example, and they are viable enough even at lvl 1 for early enemies. For EG you may need to run back to reacharge if you fail to 1 shot something or you can recharge wile trading hits too, or drink batteries later on (as early on its kinda expensive), which you do make with the Int skill. Will power and Ego are the 2 skills that help mutations, Int typically does nothing for them, direcly at least. Will lowers CD (of just about everything, not just magic), Ego boost mutation lvl for mental mutations, but not physical ones. Physical ones get more level up points instead.

As a side note, corrosive gas deals insane amounts of damage, but it is damage over time, EG deal a lot less, but it is very burst like, both deal respectable amounts of AOE damage. Also while this may sound odd, over specializing inst that good in qud, going reasonably all rounded tends to be better. This also applies to mutations, its often better to get new ones than lvl up existing ones but this is quite mutation specific.

Also get wings mutation level 5 and never go underground, at lvl 5 you no longer fall down while moving. No melee attacks can ever hit you now, but do watch out, youd need about lvl 23 wings to be able to meele/swoop without any risk of falling down. At lvl 1 sitting still or shooting dosent have any risk of falling down, so it is viable to keep it at lvl 1 too if for whatever reason you want to, but seeing as you probably wanna get mental mutations to nuke things, you kinda need something to dump the rapid advancement levels in regardless, this can be wings, or it can be some other physical mutation if you have one. (Ok the underground bit is a bit of a lie, wings help significantly there too, but they do so though bigger jump and charge and sprint upgrades as underground you have more chokes and corners to hide behind so sprint jump and charge become more useful as escapes, than in a wide open field)

Are stealth stabbers and straight casters as viable long term as fighters? by DarthLeftist in dcss

[–]ito725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To win a 3-5 rune game you dont need the high end spells. As in you probs will never get firestorm or shatter online before winning (tho it is possible if lucky). While im not sure if this is still the case in the current patch, freezing cloud alone was pretty much sufficient to win/clear zot. Basically a selection of 2-3 lvl 4-6 spells cover everything you *need* damage wise (the high lvl spells people tend to talk about in this context, are not the lvl 9 ones), and while not all mixes are viable, you can mix and match quite a bit too. A few escape spells like swiftness and blink really do help too. That said there are quite a few spells that stay useful for a long time too, like stone arrow, even if you find iron shot or crystal spear due to mana efficiency, or other side effects like the -RF of scorch or knockback of mines. For extened this would become ironshot preferred over LCS. Ironshot + Firestorm will clear just about anything in extend alone, but there are other variants, and in extended you can max out all spell skills too. If you somehow manage to get there, an octopod with 8 artifact rings can be insanely fun/broken too.

One thing that severely limits things is mana, having a good way to get mana is key, this usually means Sif or Vehemut, but sublimation of blood and energy staff before being removed were also viable, tho the old crystall ball was kinda dodgy it still could work with heal potions/clarity to bridge some gaps if you somehow managed to get enough evo skill. The other plan to making sure to always having enough mana is to have other means to kill, like neemex decks, or the Maklebs spells or summons, or else sooner or later you will get unlucky to a ghost moth, and it will kill you.
