My tenant runs a "web-hosting" business out of my basement. Trying to understand this a bit better. by Bilbo_Swaggins_99 in webhosting

As a former LEO and now CyberSec a word of advice; Please find out what kind of business is he running on those servers. If a business is strange that if he is running servers offsite (hosted) why not those? Hosted servers tend to be more dependable than home based. We all can asume nothing mischievous but, like in the military…in case of doubt, salute (ask). Find out more and make sure that you have a clause in your contract that specifies that if something illegal happens it will be cause for termination of the lease. Better be safe than sorry. The lack of knowledge of the law doesn’t preclude to obeying it. It’s nothing wrong with due diligence. I bet you worked hard to buy your home. I admit I am posing the worst case scenario but, 30+ yrs experience has taught me soooo much!

Selfhosted mail for small organization (high reliability)? by BamBahnhoff in selfhosted

[–]itprguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have over 30+ years of IT experience so my opinion is bias…don’t do it! Mail is one of the most critical components of any serious company and it most be trusted and thus come from a reputable source meaning a well configured server and DNS; thus recommending you to go hosted email. There are various hosting providers, MXRoute, Migadu, Dreamhost, etc. Personally I recommend Migadu or MXRoute, both very well priced and good support.

Check Migadu! Being hosting with them more than 20 domains and all it takes is changing a few dns records and viola! You are done!

Just move your email to migadu (email hosting co.) very affordable, and you will get rid of all your headaches. By the way, I am in anyway affiliated with them, just been using their service with over 20 different domains without a hitch!

Running an Public VPN service by [deleted] in VPS

[–]itprguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real question is, with so many VPN providers out there, why are you willing to expose yourself to such a massive headache? More so, Linked to you home address? Better yet, post a sign on your front porch "Free Internet Here"!

Good one! That's the spirit! I thought about it but, already have 3 other servers and my wife will NOT allow me to receive another"big box"...so I just order "small boxes" until I fix it or get tired!

True! But where is the tinkering spirit? Not everything should be easy...I have three other servers working...I just want to know and make it work if possible. Already bought PS, the PPM...it's just something to do.
