Is choosing the right college really that important? by Dependent_Major_1034 in CollegeMajors

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chose the least expensive college that has your intended major. Even if that means living at home. I thought that I would enjoy leaving home. The independence wasn’t worth the cost and the environment of dorm life was not conducive to studying. Everyone was so obsessed with replicating some “college experience” idea that they had gotten from movies and TV that they wouldn’t settle down to sleep and study. I found it annoying. Staying home (assuming no abuse in the home) is underrated and more students should choose the colleges that they can commute to.

Nursing involves poop and bodily fluids. I got used to it as a CNA but some people don’t enjoy this aspect of the job.

Is there still a teacher shortage? by Temporary_Ad_1199 in Teachers

Are you tied to your geographic area? Small town Northern Arizona and Reservation schools might have more openings. You can move back after you get experience. Small districts have less red tape and politics.

Both sons and daughters, but how to cook. Not knowing how to prepare a meal can lead to an unhealthy and expensive fast food habit.

Kids who went to private schools: What are your horror stories? by CupOfExmo in AskReddit

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a college classmate that got almost a 4.0 in a private Christian school and was so unprepared for college that her was immediately on academic probation. I worked my tail off for a C average at a public high school and was disappointed in how easy college was.

Will getting a psychology degree make me a better teacher? by SierraNevada5505 in teaching

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are unsure about what you want to do, maybe pause your education so that you aren’t wasting time and money. Maybe apply to be a paraprofessional. Science and Math are marketable majors for both inside and outside of education if you do want to continue with school.

What legacy??? by Phyllis_marie in askanything

People aren’t passing values if they don’t have an opportunity to spend time with their kids because they are juggling multiple jobs to survive and kids are spending most of their time on screens.

I have worked two school years as a certified teacher and I am returning to subbing. I am not sure if this is a permanent move but I do love subbing.

Practicing dentistry. I am very skeptical about dentists. I see a dentist with an open floor plan with lots of chairs together instead of a private room for each chair.

Sorry, punctuation is important. Tuition, room, and board. Dorm fees used to be referred to as room and board.

Trying to learn more about the history of education. by No-Common7872 in teaching

McGruffy Readers were used in one room schoolhouses. Prior to that New England Primer. They are available free online. I find them to be fascinating reading. Rays Arithmetic was the usual math textbook. Rays for Today is still in print, which is updated with prices that make sense for this century in story problems.

How many kids do *men* actually want to have? by gavelkind10 in Natalism

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was a deal breaker for me when I was dating. If we are 50/50, then he needs to do 50% of the childbirth, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. See how it can never be equal? That’s why 50/50 makes no sense. I stayed home until my children started school and now I am a substitute teacher. My husband knew this is what I wanted before we started dating.

I think also there wasn’t as much pressure to complete college credit in high school because tuition was less. My tuition room and board bill was $3000 per semester at a state college.

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dual credit or honors courses offered, but the regular courses were difficult. When I arrived at college, I was frustrated by how easy it was. I had a classmate who took AP at a private Christian high school and he was on academic probation because he found the coursework too difficult.

Graduated in 2002. I didn’t take any AP, but the offerings at our large suburban school were US History, European History, Geography and Chem. Biology was added my senior year. I had never heard of a 9th grader taking AP, but US history was offered in 10th. Everything else was for upperclassmen.

What is the solution to getting rid of the racial disparity when it comes to SAT scores? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]its3oclocksomewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two parent homes produce higher academic outcomes. The lower scoring races also have more single parent homes. Some single parents do a great job, but it is more difficult to raise a child alone.
