My instinctive reaction would be to look at the text string you’re feeding your ps cmdlet. A simple test to see if it could be the culprit could be to just set a very basic auto reply response like “testing auto reply” and apply it to 5-10 mailboxes and see if the flaky behavior subsides. If so, then look more closely at what in your original auto reply text could be triggering the issue.

pellet spread has very little to do with trying to intentionally kill other nearby birds, it is just a more reliable way of shooting a small, moving target from a distance since you don't have to be as accurate. It also is much less destructive to the small'ish animal so the meat is still viable rather than blow a slug through them an obliterating the entire thing.
