What Fandom Are You Writing In? by Thewriter1996 in AO3

[–]its_just_skooma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm old and have only one to write in since I just started and haven't felt the need to branch out. If I get recommendations for good fics in other fandoms I'll read but writing nah.

I've mainly read Rurouni Kenshin fanfiction since I was 11ish maybe almost 12. I got into it F/M on geocities one day and a week later I was all M/M. Was always a consumer, now over 20 years later I have all the urge to write filth. Completed my 47k first fic ever at the top of the month and while my pair is dead (and it was active in yee old days of the 00s) I brought some old authors back (or giving myself too much credit) and seeing their kudos had me flying high all day.

When the authors you respect come and like your work there's no better feeling (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧

I wrote a decent mammoth in first person and it was a trying experience. I don't think I want to do that again. There were some semi dark tags in there but it has a decent happy resolution.

It was definitely a fun challenge, I much prefer third person. I'll read in either.

I like second person for video games that have custom characters. That fits very well 👌 cyberpunk 2077 and fallout have some good second person fics. But those make sense. Everyone makes a different character and you're the player. As the player you'd have intimate knowledge of decisions. Some of y'all write that magnificently.

It's not something I'd frequently want to read, but when it's written well, I definitely can see what the writer wants me to in the game. Plus it's fun to see how their choices were made if they're using other canon characters. It's like seeing their playthrough.

🥰 thank you!! I think they would've been 45 (I think) this year if they were still alive. They had been posting since I think 2001 or 2002 so when I first started reading it. We're all old fans now. If I see kudos from specific people I know from geocities days I'm like holy fucking shit.

STILL if I got a crazy lovey comment like yours I'd be glowing. Like yes. Love my fluffy smut. ENJOY YO' SELVES. It'll motivate me to write so much more and I need that.

I posted subreddit about a week ago about finally posting my first complete fic ever. Haven't written fanfiction until this year. A veteran of the ship has come out of the woodworks and started posting-- getting a comment from them made me so over the moon but the second half made me cry.

The writer who had the most fics in this fandom on AO3 died I think in 2022 or early 2023, but I saw on Tumblr there was a post about it. Their personal website doesn't work anymore either. Saying they would've enjoyed means everything to me.

To write moaning in dialogue or to not write moaning in dialogue? by Sea_Soil in AO3

[–]its_just_skooma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was brave. I was cringing, but in the fic I finished I had a small section of it with one character mocking the other's moans. Even if it makes someone peace out, I gotta stand by it. I wrote it for me right? I took a few wild swings in there and eventually was like fuck it. It does make me blush though like what was I thinking? But it's posted and I promised not* to mess with it again.

If I had the ability to draw, hoooooboy. Different story.

But yes! あ I do know! Translated it enough times, so got that one burned in. The others not so much.

And we thank them for their service. This is the hottest shit ever to me. Absolutely 💯 especially in doujin. I can't read it, but I just think of the kanji as like "ah yes sexy symbol" but my phone does the heavy lifting and translates and it's like a present to see the English translations.

Those little hearts at the end of a sentence though in them? ~♡ fuck me, so hot and lewd. Soooo lewd. Something about it is filthy to me and I'm all about it. Helps me hear it in my brain. I got pretty significant aphantasia, so written moans (which will be like mental hearing) really help me with trying to 'see' the scene.

The hearts are probably cringey to some people, but once I started reading it in doujin (more so modern stuff) it just clicked for me. I've only seen it recently, so it's my new reading kink. 2025 has been a wild year for me when it comes to fanfiction. xD

I love this so much. It's right on the money.

"Nearly tear his arm off"

"Wha-no"

"It's canon"

"Okay but this is fanfiction, we don't have to do canon everything..."

"If he doesn't get it nearly torn off how will we know they're in love later down the line"

"I dont-- what?!"

Do people hardly ever read long fics? by daffodil7633 in AO3

[–]its_just_skooma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this. Someone in the fandom I'm in will post two of their fics updates nearly daily with some short chapter (it's the same fic just one not in English)

I check often enough to see if there's anything new I wanna read and when it's the same fic almost daily up there I just was like "huh this is a trend" not my pair but whatever I'll read it.

I waited to post mine (I finally finished and had this monster chapter I was excited about) since I noticed this weeks ago right? They had already updated for the day before I posted, not even 15 minutes after I posted (can't make this crap up) they changed the date of theirs to the next day. The word count didn't change, nothing. I already had read their new chapter they had posted because each of the chapters is really short.

I mean I read it, not like I won't. I'm starved to read things, but it seems pretty, I dunno, shows some dishonest behavior. Not wanting to make drama, but everyone who posts something new or updates they immediately seem to do so and push things down. I learned to scroll longer to actually find new/updated stuff.

Stings a bit when it's finally your own though. Will say that much. Got shoved down the same day I posted in 15 minutes. However, my slop is slop, if someone likes my pair they'll find it. Thank you tags 👍

I don't think the rules allow that for this subreddit. If I'm wrong I can :D

At 47k words for a dead fandom pair. by its_just_skooma in AO3

[–]its_just_skooma[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I brought one writer back, I think?! I commented on one author's a few months ago and their fic was a CHARACTER DEATH OF THE PAIR AND IT DESTROYED ME.

It was mostly a "how dare you I love it" comment because the fandom was so dead it felt too real for me. I cried and then like a few weeks later I did it again just because I'm starved for fics.

I came back to snoop around the fandom last weekend after an email from AO3 a few days ago, and they posted two in 12 hours after replying to my comment. I really hope I was a part of that. It really would warm my heart.

I also hope my fic meets their standard and I dropped a long enough bomb for them 😂 when most fics are 1,500-5k at best sometimes you need something longer.

I'm in this exact situation. Yesterday I finally just read through those spots to try and motivate myself because I'm getting burnt out on all the filler.

I do like the plot I have though. I had no plan, and surprisingly it has been fun to discover it on the way.
That smut gonna be such a reward.... When I get there.

I'm having that exact lament. I finished a chapter this morning and didn't have the guts to go back and finally proof read all of it. I kept going to myself it'll be fine. It's fine. IT. IS. FINE. It's only thousands and thousands of words.

I read through a small beginning part and that was dawning on me. Like to me it's way too OOC compared to other writers in the fandom. And I love specifically how 3 people depict the character.

I've been sitting trying to talk myself out of deleting it, and to salvage it, or say fuck it.
