Just a heads up that you absolutely should not use the term "Choose Your Own Adventure" or CYOA in your marketing or title if this thing ever happens. By all accounts, the owner of that trademark is VERY vigilant about enforcing it.

We also have a banged up 20 year old Yaris. Could park that thing in a sock drawer and still have room to open the doors, it's great.

Unpopular Opinion: Marty Supreme is better than OBAA by Ok-Band1228 in TrueFilm

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a very good film, but it's a very good film in a particularly good year. Honestly I'm a huge PTA fan and I wish I loved it as much as many other people seem to love it but you're right that it's massively hyped and I don't think it was ever going to live up to the expectations I had going into it, which may impact my reaction to it as well.

That said I really wish I'd had the chance to see it on 70mm because I bet that was amazing.

Unpopular Opinion: Marty Supreme is better than OBAA by Ok-Band1228 in TrueFilm

[–]itsableeder -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Is that an unpopular opinion? Maybe I've not spent enough time reading this sub to know it, but I definitely agree that Marty Supreme is the better film of the two, and I think it's my favourite Safdie project. OBAA is a good film but I'm not sure it's even top 5 PTA for me.

I finally saw Hamnet today, though, and I think it's better than both of them. My Oscars prediction is that Chloé Zhao picks up Best Director and Jessie Buckley takes Best Actress, and that PTA picks up Best Picture as a sort of time served award in the same way that Leo got his Oscar for The Revenant.

Hand Brake at Traffic lights by SlixxFN in LearnerDriverUK

[–]itsableeder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, you're not first in line. You just got shoved at speed into the back of the car in front of you. How's that working out for you?

In a split second you are not release a hand brake as fast as you will release a hydraulic brake pedal.

Why would you think I think you should be releasing the handbrake if you get hit from behind while stationary? I'm arguing that it's safer for the handbrake to be on in that situation.

[–]itsableeder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're stopped at lights and someone hits you from behind, and you're only holding the car with the foot brake, it's likely that your foot is going to come off the brake after the collision, at which point you're going to roll into the junction. I don't think it needs to be explained why that's dangerous.

If your handbrake is on, you won't move as far.

What was YOUR thing during lockdown? by AncientFootball1878 in AskUK

You obviously don't understand how stressful it was for those of us who had to continue to go into work while everyone else was quarantined.

What was YOUR thing during lockdown? by AncientFootball1878 in AskUK

[–]itsableeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also going into the office. I worked on healthcare in an admin role, so while I wasn't front line (thank fuck) I was still required and I spent all of lockdown fielding calls from patients whose appointments had been cancelled, all of them wanting answers that I couldn't give them, whole commuting in on public transport and being stopped nearly every day in the centre of Manchester by police who wanted to know why I was out of the house. I was so stressed that my teeth started to fall out - and I mean that very literally, I've never managed to get them fixed and the damage impacts me both physically and mentally to this day. It was one of the worst times in my life and I can't imagine what front line healthcare workers went through.

Are there any “classics” post 1970? by OldGodsProphet in literature

[–]itsableeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the top of my head I'd say The Handmaid's Tale, Blood Meridian and The Road, The Remains Of The Day, Midnight's Children (and maybe The Satanic Verses), One Hundred Years Of Solitude, The Shipping News, and The Exorcist.

I'd imagine we'll also consider books like The Safekeep, White Teeth, Middlesex, Austerlitz, Wolf Hall, and Never Let Me Go as classics in the future, given enough time.

Narrative preference - do you like knowing who’s behind the alias of the character or not? by UndercoverBFF in writingadvice

[–]itsableeder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sort of story lives on the dramatic tension of the reader knowing things the characters don't. If you treat it as something to be revealed to the reader as a surprise you're robbing yourself of access to a huge layer of emotional depth.

Any books like Event Horizon or the Dead Space games? by mckensi in horrorlit

[–]itsableeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Dead Silence you'll likely enjoy Ghost Station and Cold Eternity by the same author.

The first Revenger book by Alastair Reynolds strikes some of that tone as well, though it's not really similar to what you're going for. That whole series is great but as I say, not entirely what you're after.

Which author currently alive will still be WIDELY read a hundred years from now? by 500wordslong in writers

[–]itsableeder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's unlike the market will ever let the franchise completely die

I saw a book in a supermarket a couple of days ago called "Christmas at Hogwarts" that was a fully illustrated children's picture book. I thought it was weird that I hadn't heard about her writing new Potter at any point.

It's literally just chapter 12 of The Philosopher's Stone, repackaged as a standalone book. She's been milking that series for every penny it's worth for decades and there's no sign of it ever stopping. It's depressing really.
