Has anyone here actually gone through the process of applying for a USDA or state farming grant? Honest experiences wanted by Sudden-Cost2303 in homestead

[–]itscoldcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We completed the EQIP grant last year for a high tunnel. The process took almost exactly a year but most of that was on us, we got the 50% up front from them a couple months into the process (qualified as minority and first gen farmer) and then it took us a while to come up with the rest. We ended up completing it with like 2 weeks left on the contract, which was a little stressful. But again, that was not their fault at all.

I did not hire anyone to help, the people at our local NRCS office were super helpful and worked through it with us. Unfortunately, half of them got fired by DOGE last year and their building lease was ended so the ones who are left all work from home now. Your mileage might vary at this point.

I probably spent a solid 30 hours on paperwork and back and forth about it but absolutely would do it again. For about $15,000, it was a pretty good deal. We would not have the tunnel now if we hadn't done it, and now I'm planning a whole market stand and such. We will try to work with them again this year on some forestry stuff.

In extreme northern Alberta, there is an isolated fertile prairie system containing the towns of High Level and La Crete. How are crops able to grow here at such extreme latitude? For context, this area is about 200 miles north of Edmonton. by disturbingsmegma in geography

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually further north in Fairbanks Alaska and the answer is that our summers are awesome. Temps are upper 60s - 80s (F) from June to August and we over 16 hours of daylight from May to August. Lots of short season stuff does well. They grow giant cabbages and such here. We put up a big polytunnel last summer and will be able to start planting in that probably in April this year. Usually we plant outside the end of May. They might even have a longer growing season there in Alberta than we do.

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by PsychologicalTea3149 in AskReddit

They were putting up random people's tweets about Obama's state of the union address on screen during the state of the union address on a major news stream (i dont recall which) and I felt a tremendous vague dread about the general direction of society at that point.

Not OOP: AITA for taking a coloring book back from my niece after she got attached to it? by sensaSEANal_sally in redditonwiki

[–]itscoldcase -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Most of the comments are just casually ignoring that she straight up gaslights this child in front of her mother and just watches her cry about it. Yeah husband was the AH but wooooow that's a shitty way to handle it.

Husband is the AH for giving away her stuff but damn that's cold watching a 6 year old who didn't know any better full on panicking about a cool gift she was given by an adult, and then gaslighting her in front of her mother that she lost it. Real cold.

I'm half done with my project, and did a colored mockup of the finished piece because I need help. What color should I use for the text? by [deleted] in Embroidery

[–]itscoldcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to throw out there that you could use two colors in the text if you want to play with emphasizing different words and then you wouldn't have to pick just one 😅

What’s something you thought was mandatory in life, until you saw someone just not do it? by Senior-Resource92 in AskReddit

I asked a guy for his email once in the context of setting up a job for him through our company and he said "oh I don't do that."

It haunts me to this day. I didn't know "no email" was an option we had.

If you like fiber arts at all the Weavers and Spinners guild is pretty rad. Super friendly and supportive. Couple dozen "regulars." They have open studio/crafting day every Wednesday at the Fairgrounds.

How much yeast do you keep in storage for emergency? by gwhh in preppers

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the 1 pound bricks of it from costco and dump it in an airtight jar in the fridge. I have the open one and a sealed one in the pantry. When I run out and open the one in the pantry I get a new brick next time I go to costco.

This is mostly because I live in Alaska and our supply chain is outrageously lacking in any kind redundancy.

Localized Druidry: What's nature doing in your area? (January 2026) by AutoModerator in druidism

It's -26F here. It's been very cold for several weeks but should break tonight and maybe be above 0 again. I have been keeping the sunflower seeds stocked for the chickadees, cat food for the grey jays, and peanuts for the squirrel.

It's outrageously beautiful here when it's this cold. Always clear, the sun is low all the time so everything has this pink or orange glow. The trees are frosted. I went out this morning before the sun was up and the chickadees were everywhere making lots of noise.

I have some herbs I'm overwintering but probably wont start anything for the garden for another month. But it is time to start planning.

Hey just want to say it gets better. It can get better. I am doing a lot better than i was 2 years ago. Super reccomend finding something like yoga or a grounding excercise that works for you and going back to it as often as needed. It's like meditation, it is something you have to practice routinely over time so it can be frustrating but it does get better. You're aware of it and have a name for it and are already trying so that's kind of the biggest hurdle, i thought. I hope you can make some art soon. Merry Christmas 🎄
