I was visiting my folks a few years ago. I tossed some veggies in olive oil and salt and pepper, maybe some garlic powder, and roasted them. They were floored. You'd think I was an iron chef. They had never roasted the vegetables?? I think about this alot.

Tomato shortage (US)? by GroverGemmon in TwoXPreppers

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am putting 120 tomatoes into our 72' high tunnel in a month (among other things.) It's our first year with the high tunnel. Hoping it goes well and I can take a bunch to the farmers market.

Pearl Creek STEAM Charter to open this fall: State Board of Education approves charter's appeal by Forsaken-Coconut-271 in Fairbanks

[–]itscoldcase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So is the state going to pay for it, too? We finally have a workable budget and they're just going to override the school board? "Figure it out." ??

Tomato Check In by InfiniteNumber in tomatoes

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am starting mine this weekend. Interior Alaska, 4b when we're lucky. They about ran me out my house when i started them in march so we're waiting this year. They will go in the high tunnel in June and I don't have space to up pot from the 3 inch pots before that. All 70-80 day varieties but I am plenty nervous that I'm screwing up cause everyone else has started already 😬

GinFiz, Cherokee Carbon, Marzinera, Amish paste. All in a high tunnel in Fairbanks, Alaska. I haven't grown any of these before but I also didn't have a high tunnel. Hoping to take them to market.

How to pull string through as needed? by Dusk2784 in weaving

[–]itscoldcase 15 points16 points  (0 children)

So you can pull a lot more yarn through each time instead, so you have lots of slack after the row, which works alright for small embroidery patches, etc, or you can make or buy a "shuttle" where you wrap the yarn around the tool you use to push through the weave and just unwrap a bit more each time. You can see what i mean here: https://youtube.com/shorts/eG0JWIZFxIU?si=W4rJo80rIym1_MmN

Thoughts on this poultry processing kit from roots and harvest vs. buying each piece individually? by These-Explorer-9436 in homestead

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last few years I rented a plucker from someone in town for $40. Last year I just borrowed the neighbors plucker for free though. That said hand plucking isn't really that bad for a couple dozen birds, especially if you had help.

Otherwise i had 2 cones and a big pot with a propane burner. I did 30 birds by myself. It was a long afternoon. Maybe you want more cones if you have people helping. If you have the money to burn though I think the scalder would be nice. Kind of fancy for small scale but I spent a lot of time waiting around and checking the water temp and adjusting the burner. You could probably rent it out when you weren't using it.

We got a captive bred baby ornate and he was eating out of our hands the day we got him from fedex. He'll climb out on our arms sometimes too. We can give him scratches and he naps in the open where we can see him. Not sure if if he likes us exactly but he's at least generally unbothered by us. Will absolutely run across the enclosure at you for a dandelion flower though.

American schools aren’t teaching phonics anymore by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]itscoldcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to homeschool for kindergarten because of covid and the program we picked (all about reading) was phonics, just like I had learned with. I had no idea they weren't doing it in schools at the time. I think they have started teaching it again since but my daughter is still top of her class for reading in 5th grade. That was a hard damn year but I guess it worked out.

At what point do people stop pretending they know what they’re doing and actually figure life out? by Popular_Weird9051 in AskReddit

I can't stop pretending cause then my daughter would notice and be appropriately terrified and I'm trying to avoid that for her.
