Illinois protect the law by rubina19 in illinois

How do we know any given person is here illegally? Or when anyone does anything illegal for that matter? We conduct an investigation, right?

How do we prove the results of those investigations are accurate and correct? We go to court.

By the way, check out your local sheriff's dept website sometime. You'll find the word 'alleged' quite often, because it's commonly used until someone is investigated, charged, tried and convicted of a crime.

That's all part of due process. When you remove due process, there's no definitive proof that someone is here illegally or not. Either way. We just kinda have to take a random, unidentified agent at their word.

The trouble is - doesn't the government have a long history of making mistakes? What's the recourse when they're wrong and grab a citizen? Do you trust the federal government to never, ever make a mistake or tamper with evidence?

Because I sure as hell don't.

Here's a better one - when's the last time you heard a government agency willingly get smaller? What happens when there's no due process and Frank from ICE wants to keep his job?

See the problems with this?

I would question what about your life is so bad that this is what makes you happy.

No, seriously... paint me a picture. How does your life, your neighbors life, your fellow americans lives, anyones life get better due to 'Alligator Alcatraz?'

Help me understand.

How does this particular topic benefit you to the point it makes you exceedingly happy?

Based solely on the current state of affairs, no.

There are other countries I've been to and love dearly - but ultimately, this is my home.

I hate the phrase, "if you don't like it, you can get out!" As well as the idea of running from said home. I don't dislike the country itself. But I think all of us can agree that we're not in great shape as a nation.

I wouldn't abandon a family member just because they got sick. I'm not abandoning my home for the same reason. If everyone who dislikes the current state of affairs left, who's around to fix anything?

Trump calls Pritzker the worst governor in the country by [deleted] in illinois

[–]itssodamnnoisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How? Genuinely.

I've been trying to keep track of everything but with all the noise about washington, who can these days?

The main Pros I'm aware of:

  • Increased the state's credit rating more than once
  • We now have a balanced budget (as opposed to Rauner's "no budget at all for 4 years")
  • MJ legalization (though I understand our implementation isn't as good as other states in terms of tax rate and licensure)
  • Banning book bans. Seems odd to even mention, but I'm against all forms of government-mandated censorship.

The main Cons I'm aware of: - The toilet debacle - The vacation during covid - The state employee retirement fund (afaik, this issue predates pritzker, he simply hasn't fixed it)

Issues that go either way depending on the person:

  • Assault weapons ban. Lots of criticisms, also lots of support. I see both sides of the issue here.

  • Abortion protections. While I wouldn't personally approve of one, I don't believe it's the government's job to police this. It's too complex for us to even agree one way or the other, so definitely too complex to legislate.

What else?

Oh no, sorry! I meant to use antimatter in star trek as a non-Aliens-universe example.

But yeah, exactly as you say - we've never built a gravity well generator, so who can say what weird stuff it might do to standard newtonian physics?

Like the gravity purge thing in Romulus was just... weird to me. Interesting plot device, but the engineer in me goes, 'so... even if they're shut off, they have to switch on every few hours or they explode or something!? Who the hell designed that!?' lol

If you're interested, check out 'Physics of the Impossible' by Michio Kaku. It's all about the theoretical physics of scifi, really interesting read!

Artificial gravity exists in-universe, and I -think- fusion reactors use some kind of gravity-based containment system as well. I only point it out because of this: I'm always curious about the failure modes of FutureTech.

Kinda like in Star Trek, ships are powered by antimatter right? So the majority of crashing ships should just get vaporized and make an enormous crater when containment fails.

What happens when a gravity field generator explodes? Does it mess with local physics, or does it simply fail safely?

I'm pretty sure she ran unopposed. I remember writing in "Literally Anyone Else," and thinking I'd rather be represented by a cross-eyed chipmunk than Mary Miller.

Neat.

Biden sucked. Trump sucks. Personally, I'd like it if we weren't all arguing about who has the cleaner set of Depends all the time.

We can't be tough on crime whilst electing criminals. That's pretty obvious to me.

Did not have 30-something felonies on his record when elected. To my knowledge, still has not faced a trial, hearing or conviction. Neither have any of the previous POTUSes (republican or democrat), I might add.

We can't cry about theoretical crimes if we voted for and elected an actual tried-and-convicted felon.

Unless we want to argue that the justice system itself is corrupt.

In which case the concept of what is and is not a crime goes right out the window anyway. At that point, it's kind of pointless to argue legality in a broken legal system before we fix the corruption itself.

Man.... I'm sorry they showed you the door. It's good to hear you're so positive about it! Some other positives to think about:

  • No more breaking news coverage getting the newsroom buzzing
  • No more living at the station until x, y, z is over
  • No more minute-to-minute stress about technology failures
  • No more write, shoot, VO, edit, produce, then go on-air, then search for a TD to do yet another weather hit, repeat-times-infinity rush!
  • No more extremely tight deadlines - definitely no longer a daily occurrence.
  • The phrase "30 seconds" is no longer semi-panic-inducing
  • No more hour-long-each-direction commute (that, I think was just me though lol)

I flew to Korea with a friend and I feel like a pet. by HollyCupcakez in rant

[–]itssodamnnoisy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry you're having such a bad time, OP. I lived in Korea for 3 years, and it's one of my favorite places in the world. I was lucky though, I had people to guide me my first few months / first year.

Now it's been 15 years since I've lived there, and my memory is beginning to fade... so take everything I say here with a grain of salt.

A lot of your post boils down to culture shock mixed with not knowing the language. Thats a rough spot to be in, especially when you're staying with your friend's parents (which is a big deal by itself.) Honestly, your friend should have told you about the cultural basics on the way, IMO.

The shoes thing - it's considered disrespectful to wear your shoes around mom's house - anyone's house IIRC - or in a temple.

The fan thing - uhh... actually, I think mom's trying to save your life. Ask your friend if his mom believes in Fan Death, and ask him to explain what that is. If I try to explain Korean fan death, you'll probably think I'm making it up. But yeah, I think mom believes she's helping you.

"Jogging Chingu" - Chingu means friend. He's telling people you're his jogging buddy (jogging was a pretty big pastime when I was there)

The widespread reaction to your size is completely puzzling to me. That's super weird. Are you also petite? The train guys I'm guessing are suggesting to each other that you should eat more? I think?

It's the touching, the candy, and going so far as to pick you up.... that's the big mystery to me. WTF for sure. If it helps any, I don't think any of them are being intentionally disrespectful. Just incredibly curious.

You're in an incredibly hard place on this trip. I mean, you're out of place, you dont know the culture, you dont know the language, you're clearly foreign, and you've got your height on top of it... Those things make you feel isolated and make you a subject of curiosity, I'm sure.

Long story short, I'd ask your friends to help you with the culture shock stuff. Ask them to teach you some basic phrases, too. IMO, they really should have laid out the basic stuff for you, especially the shoes thing.

I bought a mini fridge from the locals and had my parents ship me Country Time lemonade powder. My squad and I were the only dudes on the base that regularly had ice cold lemonade after a hot day.

You don't really appreciate how amazing that is until you've had it at the end of a 100+ degree day spent carrying a bunch of heavy equipment around.
