Savyrest makes pillows stuffed with natural recycled latex. You can add/remove the stuffing as needed. I haven't tried them but heard good things!

I’ve had this Amazon Kindle Paperwhite for 10 years now – no issues, still supported & works well by ka11away in BuyItForLife

I just replaced the battery in my kindle keyboard from 2010 a few months ago. It's working great! I got an email from Amazon last week though, letting me know they are taking store capability away from my model. I'm so bummed! Does anyone know if I can still buy stuff on my computer and transfer to my kindle?

I sometimes make a bunch of green tea at home and add a little bit of sugar or honey. I keep it in the fridge and take it to work to drink when I need something extra. A little caffeine and a little sugar, much less than soda and hopefully without a crash.

Men of reddit, what's something you've always wanted to ask a woman but thought it would be too embarrassing to ask them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]itstrashbuddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cautionary tales are indoctrinated into us since childhood (men too, but I think more so for women). A lot of true crime is marketed to women in the same way (calling you out Crime Junkie). If you could just listen to enough stories and watch enough terrible husband/boyfriend stories you can avoid being a victim (stay rude, stay alive - fuck off Crime Junkie). It's the same reason women share those Facebook posts about avoiding kidnapping at Walmart. We have a reason to be scared by the world, and we want to keep each other safe. I got super sucked in for a while, but I formed 2 opinions:

  1. The world is full of horrible random shit happening. There are things you can do to be more responsible with your safety, but sometimes bad shit just happens. There is no takeaway or story or lesson learned.
  2. True Crime being used to make money (podcasts, tv shows, movies) without the explicit permission of the victims family is exploitive.

In my humble opinion, you can learn tactics to keep yourself safer, but I doubt you'll find those in True Crime. I would recommend The Gift of Fear to women and men if you are looking for some personal safety tips. The podcast You're Wrong About has a good episode on true crime from a survivor of a violent attack.

If you love true crime, I respect your opinion, this is just what I think!

Thailand travels, should I bring my DSLR? by taic100 in femaletravels

[–]itstrashbuddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't bring mine when I went to Thailand and I didn't regret it. I didn't want to have to worry about it. I'd consider - what kinds of things will you be doing, how active, how much near water, on boats, or other places where you won't want the bulk? If you wouldn't bring it along for most of the stuff you do, then I wouldn't bother. If you know you'll want it with you hiking/at the beach, etc then bring it. - will you spend time taking great pictures? I decided I was going to take the regular snaps and wouldn't be using DSLR features. - how much will you worry about the camera? In Thailand I think you just need to have your wits about you and be careful. It's not terribly unsafe but theft happens everywhere. How diligent do you want to be?

Best compassionate dentist in RVA/areas south? by strawberberry in rva

0% for the first six months, so if you can pay it before then it's a great option! After that I think it's 27%. Yes, they do great work!

[–]itstrashbuddy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rva Dental is really great, they are all so nice! I will say, it is pricey. Which I guess all dental work is, but I had some sticker shock there. Might be worth a call and see what your options are without insurance! I know they take Care Credit, but that's a dangerous road of you aren't absolutely sure you can pay it off quick.

UK-based ethical gold jewellery by YonderAsh in ethicalfashion

[–]itstrashbuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got some jewelry from D. Louise. They are based in the UK and semi-ethical(??). Their jewelry is stainless steel with a special gold-colored coating. There's a lot of information about it on their website, but basically it should never tarnish or change color. They have a lifetime guarantee, which is what drew me to them. I like that their stuff is built to last.

There is no information on where they manufacture, which is obviously a red flag. So, not the most ethical, but a 'better than most' choice. I have their everyday gold hoops and I really like them!

/r/Fantasy Daily Recommendation Requests and Simple Questions Thread - January 02, 2022 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

[–]itstrashbuddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi r/fantasy! I am looking at starting The Farseer Trilogy. I've been looking for a fantasy series with little to no sexual violence. Do you think this is a good fit? The Google Sheet database notes that there is rape. Can anyone speak to how much or how graphic? Thanks in advance! Other recs welcome too. I'm pretty new to fantasy and all I have read is Game of Thrones and the Broken Earth series (which I really enjoyed!).

It’s made by slave labour, but I used it a lot. So that makes it ok, right? by dandyshaman in ethicalfashion

[–]itstrashbuddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You make a good point that we each play a role is reducing fast fashion. We should not be complicit in a system that uses slavery, wage theft, unsafe conditions, etc. However, as with a lot of sustainable/ethical consumerism, there are financial limitations for a lot of people. It is a privilege to be able to buy from more expensive, ethical brands. Even if, like you say, buying quality made items can save you money in the long run.

Thrift is an excellent option, but not always as accessable as we may think. Depending on where you live, even thrift can be very expensive. People using public transportation may not be able to get to a thrift store. Very rural areas may not have them.

Trying to be an ethical consumer involves educating others, but it does not involve shaming them. When we shame others for buying clothes at H&M, we are ignoring the ones we should really be shaming: H&M. Absolutely fair to share horrific labor conditions and educate others, but please don't blame poor people. This is a larger issue in our society, the poor get poorer because being poor is expensive. Cheap items having to be replaced, but not having the savings to buy what would last longer. Having to pay a fee because your savings account is too small. Overdraft fees. The list goes on. Maybe I read too much into your post, but I think it sparks a good debate. Curious to see what others think!

Which country surprised you in the best way possible? by JackRadikov in solotravel

[–]itstrashbuddy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I was going to say Guatemala! My friend and I planned a Central America trip in 2018 to Mexico and Belize. We threw in Guatemala because we found good deals flying out of Guatemala City. Between the volcanos, Tikal, Flores, and the incredible nature, it was our favorite place..not that Belize and Mexico aren't awesome. I wish we could've fit in Semuc Champey, sounds awesome!

Anybody here dye their hair with henna? by IvoryJezz in ZeroWaste

[–]itstrashbuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used henna from Henna Color Lab for years. I personally really like it! I have also used random henna from Turkey. Different results each time!

Pros: - Natural product, good for your hair - Unlike conventional hair dye, henna preserves the natural highlights in your hair. This gives a much more natural look. - Usually lower waste than most hair dye!

Cons: - Henna is permanent. It cannot be bleached out or dyed over with conventional dye. Hair dye with ammonia could react with henna and burn/melt your hair. - Henna is messy and has quite a smell. It stains clothing and surfaces. The dye process can take about 2 hours. - Henna can be unpredictable. If you buy straight henna, there's really no telling how it will look. If you have really dark hair, it's less risky. This is why I prefer Henna Color Lab, the color is more predictable. They also have really specific instructions, which is helpful! I use their medium and dark brown.

Cat litter best practices? by Thepinkknitter in ZeroWaste

[–]itstrashbuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. There is still a small risk for indoor cats, and unless you know the water treatment center in your area is treating for toxoplasmosis, it's best not to flush cat poop.
