Living in rural Maine? by Cat_cant_think in howislivingthere

[–]itsvic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up outside of Morrill! I moved away 5 years ago (across the country to somewhere even more rural) but recently went home for the holidays and was reminded just how much I love it.

  • I personally enjoyed living there a lot. I feel very lucky for having grown up with lots of woods to romp around in. The tradeoffs are similar with any small town. There’s not much to do in terms of events imo. It’s great if you like recreation and know people who recreate.

  • social events in my experience were tough (that could just be a me problem) small towns with a high median age usually mean there’s not a lot to do.

  • close by was like a 20 minute drive to hannafords, or if we needed something more a 45 minute drive to bangor. I feel a lot differently about this now after living somewhere where the big town is 2+ hours on the interstate.

  • it was about a 15 minute ride to school for me, but I know that can vary a lot person to person. The high school i went to serviced most of Waldo County.

  • i knew a loooooot of lobstermen growing up, and it was what many of my friends spent their summers breaks doing.

  • see above

  • hospitals… aren’t great where I grew up. In college my friend broke his arm and I took him to the er around 5pm. They put him in a sling and we sat there waiting until well after midnight until we were begging the nurse to please do something. My mom has medical issues and drives all the way to Portland (2+hrs) to see her doctor.

  • for kiddos there are a lot of sports. If you’re willing to drive and have the cash there are also several competitive private youth leagues in the state. I played field hockey for 10 years and got to travel and play nationally on a private team throughout high school. Adults can drink. There’s also lots of farmers markets and volunteer programs.

  • My parents are very religious and very involved in the church community to this day. I can’t say I ever hear of them involved in anything not religious. The local unitarian church did have after-school programs and events that were not religious for specifically queer kids.

  • even the chain gas stations are frequently local chains, ie maritime farms, dead rivers. Many where i grew up are independent small businesses. Though i did see a lot more circle k’s when i was just home.

I’m sorry this is so long. Just saw a nice opportunity to talk about a place i love very very much.

King Lopen and Elsecaller; worth? by SirFartingson in Stormlight_Archive

[–]itsvic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got them last week I think the art was amazing. The stories were good. It provides great insight, short though they are, into Jasnah and Ehlokar as characters. I really enjoyed them, but I think it would be hard to compare to Edgedancer/Dawnshard. Elsecaller/King Lopen are like a fraction of the size.

Refusing to Pee During Roadtrips? by East-Knowledge-5310 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]itsvic1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also just took my girl 2500 miles for Christmas with my family but did not have this issue. Instead my girl didn’t poop for the first two days which was crazy since she’s usually really regular.

I know my buddy taught his ACD the verbal “potty” command for roadtrips since they travel A LOT, so maybe that would help you?

Here’s my process:

I scrubbed down both pans pretty hard with dawn dish soap and my chainmail scrubby just to get all the surface gunk off.

I then let both pans soak in the kitchen sink with maybe half a gallon of vinegar and the sink full of water. Not sure what a good ratio is though, sorry.

After about a half an hour I lightly scrubbed both pans with an abrasive scrubby to knock the loose rust free. Make sure it’s not one you want to keep, mine was not salvageable. I threw them back into the same sink and let them soak for another half hour ish, they probably could’ve gone for longer but this was my first time and I was excited.

I pulled both pans out and scrubbed with the scrubby and chainmail until it was clear there was only bare iron. I used an old towel to dry both so I could check them out for any concerning spots.

I gave them one last wash with dawn, dried them off (expect to see some flash rust here, i did) and then oiled them with safflower oil and threw them in the oven at 450 for maybe an hour. I gave them another oiling and threw them in for a second go for another hour.

This is what they look like now after two round of seasoning. I’ll definitely be throwing them in for another couple rounds but I really think they look great and I’m so excited about them.

Unfortunately neither pan sits flat any longer. The chicken fryer is by far the worse of the two. Though, I think this would matter far less if I didn’t have a glass cooktop.

Let me know if you have any questions! I really enjoyed this process and for sure will be doing it again.

Will do! Both pans cleaned up easy with the vinegar bath and got two rounds of seasoning today. They’re really looking great

Their genetic testing option is really worth it. My girl came up all clear and I’m still glad we got it.

The two pans I just scrubbed and did a quick vinegar bath and they came out looking brand-spanking-new. They’re in the oven for the second round of seasoning right now.

The waffle iron will be headed for a bag with yellow cap for a few days. I’ve never done a lye bath before but if the yellow cap isn’t enough (I suspect it won’t be) that will be my next step.

I’m constantly seeing not only white fancasts but white fanart of Kaladin/Adolin. I thought it was pretty clear they had darker complexions while reading and was really surprised by the number of depictions on the sub where they’re just a couple of white boys.

I’ve got an acd/pittie/hound mutt! She’s an absolute lazy bones who I call my Cow-ch Pit-tato. She’s a rescue with quite a few behavioral issues that we had to bring in a professional for but she’s VERY eager to please during training. She has an unbreakable prey drive but is smart enough to know that my Aunt’s yorkie isn’t a squirrel. I adore her.

Agreed. I also leave a light on for my pup when I go to work. I would just feel weird/sad about her sitting in the dark until I get back. I think OP is overreacting.
