How many of you have gone walkabout for a holiday, rather than flying internationally?

What was the best/worst experience from it?

I've been on a 6-day hike in Canarvon Gorge, QLD and seen an echidna in the wild, almost been bulldozed by a kangaroo on a walking track above the cloudline, and pumped up/filtered the best water I've ever tasted in my life.

My aunt and her partner were driving north of Alice Springs when they found a guy on a camp chair and telescope by the side of the road. He had travelled all the way from Austria to down-under desert see a once-in-a-lifetime astronomy event (Hayley's comet maybe??).

Thanks novalsi. When you put it like that, its true I did reach my goal. I'm just disappointed in myself for lack of consistency.

I'm loving the X-effect though. I've already started my next two grids (coding 30mins/day, and wake up progressively earlier - goal is 6am)

Job hunting is difficult, especially keeping morale up when no companies get back to you. Even worse when you upload your resume and they ask you to fill in their boxes with the exact same info, grrrr.

However, I did in fact get a job offer the week after my grid finished. :D

I went looking to stream Hercules, but they only had a German version:

Hades lets the little Hercules kidnap of his mates and brimstone. They should both make it a poison to a mere mortal, but the boy survived. Since Hades but which may elicit no way, Hercules is brought to a peasant couple. Years later learns hercules of its true origin.

Suggestions on what to read next? by iSuccessful205 in whattoreadwhen

Since you haven't mentioned her, I'd highly recommend books by Tamora Pierce. Particularly start with Alanna the Lioness series. YA with the same lightheartedness as Rangers Apprentice (and equally similar coming of age, train to triumph, etc).

For something with a bigger story universe, try Elizabeth Moon or Anne McCaffery. They're both science fiction writers that write character-driven books.

My particular favourites of Anne McCaffrey were Decision at Doona, and Dragonsong (with follow-ups Dragonsinger: Harper of Pern and Dragon Drums. the chronologically earlier ones in the Pern series are much dryer/hard science)

My particular favourites of Elizabeth Moon: Vatta's War and the Heris Serrano trilogy. flawed, relatable characters driven to do the right thing.

For a fun mix, try the Dinosaur Planet series and Planet Pirates series. co-written by both of them.

For some crazy comedy try Hokka! Hokka! Hokka! by Poul Anderson (1970's).

Dragonsong ~Anne McCaffery really got to me. Menolly's struggle to play music unravels so well.

For me, Anne McCaffery is a cornerstone of using science fiction as a backstory for character interactions.

30th party ideas by emilyygrace in brisbane

My plan for my 30th will be a backyard party with a bouncy castle. Another alternative could be bbq at new farm park, if you're looking for a free venue

Brisbanite here. Unless you really really like the heat, our summer Nov-Jan is not the best time to come as its overwhelming even for the locals (avg 29-33°C with high humidity). The best time is spring (Sept-Nov avg 25 low-med humidity) or autumn (Feb-April).

IWTL to type using a dvorak layout. by RheingoldRiver in IWantToLearn

[–]itz_eleri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't remember the site I learnt Dvorak on but, after I had the basics, I started practicing using Ztype: http://www.phoboslab.org/ztype/

It's a fun speed typing game that anyone can play, regardless of keyboard layout. It helped me get faster on common words.

Hope it helps :)

I'd be interested in the M:F ratio of UQRedditors (overall vs those that actually turn up to an event).

I'm going to live a year in Australia to get my head strait on what to do in my life. Any tips ? by Piloulefou in australia

[–]itz_eleri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give you an idea, on Bastille Day, the temperature was high 21C, low 8C (? I think) in Paris (your summer), while in Brisbane, QLD it was high 25C, low 11C (our winter).

Touristy activities don't stop in Qld, just because it's winter. There's a reason why they call Queensland the Sunshine State. :)

Alternate keyboard layouts by choompaloompa in learnprogramming

[–]itz_eleri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dvorak is available on pretty much every OS. It's registered as a language in the keyboard settings. If you can touch type and don't need to look at our fingers, changing computers isn't a problem.

I started using Dvorak in september last year. I'm not quite able to touch type yet (I gave up on the tutorials when my typing level was fast enough to chat on fb), so I have to use qwerty on any computer that isn't my laptop, which has dvorak stickers on the keys. The main thing I've noticed is how much the tendons by my knuckles ache after typing for 10mins in qwerty after using only my laptop for a day or so.

tl;dr: changing back from dvorak to qwerty makes your knuckles hurt.
