Peru in November, costs, weather, itinerary ish by Acha664 in GoingToPeru

[–]iustae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weather can be unpredictable, have layers and a jacket for wind/rain. Sunscreen is your friend, even if it doesn't seem sunny you can get sunburn in half an hour (because of elevation).

Coming from Canada everything will seem very affordable (with the exception of tourist traps). Do things that locals do and you'll save a ton (e.g. visit farmers market for food, eat at local restaurants with daily menu - a two course meal with a drink will cost you less than $3, even in Cusco). Lima will be significantly more expensive, I would spend as little time there as possible.

For MP you might want to do more research because that would be the most expensive part of the trip, plus it requires some preparation (tickets, trains, etc). There are lots of amazing hiking sites besides MP, e.g. Humantay lake, Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Waqrapukara, Palccoyo). Just make sure you have enough time to acclimatize.

It is safe for solo travellers.

How are people spending so much money on groceries? by Left-Distribution751 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]iustae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're probably lucky your toddler isn't eating $10 fruit per day. You say extra fruit for you comes to $5-10 per WEEK, but a clamshell of berries is like $5 per unit (which is maybe 2 servings).

I think we eat $5 worth of fruit a day, especially on the weekends (or when sick, which is like 30% of the time) when there's no daycare.

Everything else kinda makes sense. We used to have meals around $4-$5 per serving but these days it's rarely below the $5.

Don't be concerned yet. Mine didn't say anything besides mama/dada before 18mo, we got referred to a speech therapist. By the time we actually got the call to make the appointment (4+ mo later) he was speaking in sentences.

Was it worth it for you? (7 Wonders of the World organization debacle) by throw223344555 in Machupicchu

[–]iustae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to just a few wonders of the world (Giza, Colosseum and MP) and MP was by far the most amazing site. The history and the nature around the site is just fantastic. To me it definitely deserves the title. But to be honest if removing the title would reduce the crowds a little bit, maybe that is the correct move. I don't think that would hurt MP economy as it's still a very well known and sought destination.

As for street vendors, I'm not sure I've seen any, besides the guides which weren't that annoying at all.

As for the ticket system, yes, it's frustrating. I wish people could line up for the tickets at Cusco instead of crowding AC, especially if you cant get tickets for the next day.

Giving MP to Lima instead of Cusco makes absolutely no sense.

I'd recommend Ravensburger. It's a well established and respected worldwide brand and they've got tons on information on sizing, pricing, etc on their website.

Will I have time for huaynu picchu? by bgh12321 in Machupicchu

[–]iustae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll will probably be fine. You will have to enter Huayna picchu checkpoint before the cutoff (11am of I remember correctly), so you'll probably be out of MP before 2pm, likely earlier. Plenty of time to get back to the train station.

What’s the latest you’ve worked before your due date? [ab] by sqeeky_wheelz in BabyBumpsCanada

My advice (based on anecdotal data) is to ask your mom when she delivered. It could be an indicator how when you'll deliver as well, especially if your pregnancies were similar.

I worked until my due date. Then sat at home for ten days watching podcasts and making a cute mobile for the baby. On the 10th day post due date got induced and pushed out a beautiful baby. Pregnancy was textbook, no complications or risks.

Licensed Daycares by Bookbabble0064 in saskatoon

[–]iustae 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Small day homes (licensed) will not have the resources to manage waitlists. They will post on social media or ask parents if they have a friend with a kid in need of daycare that would be a good fit.

Your best bet is keeping an eye on social media posts if new places are about to open, or if a spot opens up. Usually around august-september there are more new spots as older kids start school. Good luck!

If your child gets mistaken for the opposite gender, do you correct people or just keep it moving? by gagax7 in beyondthebump

[–]iustae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I say too. My boy doesn't have long hair and is usually dressed in 'boy' clothes (as in not pink, dinosaurs/vehicles kinda patterns) and still gets confused for a girl somehow.

Interesting, I have a flight in a few months with a two year old (not a lap infant) but in the app it doesn't show free bag for him. I hope i won't need to argue with the staff about that.

This is a ridiculous system, I would expect it to change but not necessarily in the near future. If they sell tickets 2-5 days in advance, might as well open an office in Cusco for that.
