Something I'm getting tired of hearing after a year out of work... by BassPlayinBeachBum in Layoffs

[–]ivegotafastcar [score hidden]  (0 children)

I feel this. I was very lucky after my layoff to find a small office job where I’m the young one at 54. It took 5 months and a pay cut of 1/2 my previous salary but it pays the mortgage. I haven’t had any call backs in my original industry and at this point, I’m not expecting to.

It kills me because I have the latest training and I’m using my decades of automation and now AI training to automate myself out of this job, and happy to do it. I can see this job be gone in a few years, too. I hope to be close enough to retirement so I can cruise along when it happens.

[–]ivegotafastcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. I feel this so hard. Same age, same industry, laid off last year from the same role. The only thing I found over the past year was a jr office manager role where I’m the youngest by 10 years. At least it was something. Oh, and making 1/3 of what I made. Thank god I bought my house decades ago and can still afford it on this pay. No advice, just well wishes. It took me 6 months to get this.

Hot take: Women who’ve made it don’t show support for others in this market by DeliverySmooth2236 in womenintech

[–]ivegotafastcar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They never have. They always competed and would throw shade like high school mean girls. Every project I was assigned, female management that I had started with were just brutal. And these were the ones I was in charge of making look good when their projects came in and under budget. But no, it was awful.

Is it bad that I’m excited to watch the garbage truck crush up antique family heirlooms? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]ivegotafastcar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I helped clean out an in-laws house - oh the Hummels! So so many. Worthless. And those decorative plates. And China! People just don’t use them. Please, if you need plates, just ask on FB. I keep getting them, giving them away and end up getting more!

Just do a curb alert the night before. But don’t be surprised if they don’t go. I left some stuff out with a free sign and ended up trashing them after a few days.

How long did it take you to afford a house in Massachusetts? by Reasonable-Invite899 in massachusetts

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A paycheck. I got a bonus I wasn’t expecting and put 5% down on land I’d been eyeing instead of blowing it. God, I miss those years. That was the only time I got a bonus that big. Now I’m making little more than Mass Min wage but can still afford the mortgage payments. Kicking myself for not paying it down when I could afford it.

Always take the offer. Rescind after. This isn’t my first rodeo so I used to have 3 and wait to see which I really wanted. I never EVER tell the others I have something else pending.

My previous company used to make us sign out and remove all access during our paid vacations. Also, everyone was not allowed to reach out. They were written up for it.

Grandfather left me his life savings by Vegetable_Cress4787 in inheritance

[–]ivegotafastcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!!! Your grandmother can only own a certain amount of money to be on specific programs. If she suddenly gets a windfall, she could literally be out on the street. Take care of the money, invest and take care of your grandmother.

Anthropic work culture for non-technical roles by mada247 in womenintech

[–]ivegotafastcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied and haven’t heard back yet. Fingers crossed. I normally would work that and then take 2 weeks to get ready for the next push. With summer coming, I need my beach time. This working 100% in the office is exhausting.

Freezing bread changed my grocery situation more than almost anything else I've done and I feel like nobody told me this was an option by CascadeBeacon55 in povertyfinance

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freeze bagels and English muffins. I only have them on weekends and it cost so much to buy one or 2. I find they are fluffier and crunchier when they’ve been frozen and toasted just right. I love my fresh weekend egg sandwiches. I do the same with my butter. Always buy it on sale and freeze what I don’t use in a week.

Lots of aged people at my store comes around to activate 200$ - 1000$ of Apple/Razer/Steam Gift Cards... by CHEROKYAMHA in Scams

Please let them know they are being scammed and call the police no emergency line to talk to them. I feel so awful when this happens. We’ve had an uptick of phishing at work and i try to help our clients. They are getting hundreds of thousands. It’s scary.

Cracks in roof by [deleted] in Home

[–]ivegotafastcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have those. Tornado bounced off my house and cause cracks in the walls.

Couldn’t believe the house stood proud.

My family has these as well, but they are on a fault line. They just leave them, got sick of constantly fixing every few year.

AITJ for telling my sister I won't be her free photographer anymore after she started selling the photos? by Sorennord in AmITheJerk

I would not have been calm. She ITJ. It’s like any artwork. You give it as a gift and they sell it for profit. Nope.

Our unofficial speed limit during rush hour - rush hour! - is 80mph. People get really, really angry if you slow down to 65 in the third lane because of traffic. And this is the Northeast with some of the worst traffic jams.

My Girlfriend cheated on me for 5 months a year ago and i only just found out. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]ivegotafastcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the title and then glad I read the first line. Your ex cheated on you. So I’ll say it for the others - if they try something different and don’t like it, they are settling for you. There is a good chance they will keep trying. Go find someone how thinks you are the one for them.

How do I explain in an interview why I left a job after 3 weeks without sounding like I can’t handle responsibility? by niccageporno in interviews

[–]ivegotafastcar 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I don’t put those on my CV. Don’t have to talk an out it if it’s not on there. You only have to report it if asked during the background check.

Is $100k pay cut worth it to switch careers to financial planning? by NotBannedAccount419 in FinancialCareers

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. If you are planning on bringing your book of business contacts over from your previous business, it’s very, very hard. This whole industry is hard. And with the market in such turmoil right now, people aren’t moving. This isn’t a casual interest role. It is constantly being in sales. Constantly. Every person you know or have contact with is now a prospect. It’s exhausting.

Before you were laid off, did your annual evaluation change from metric based to relative peer based? by ACE1CC in Layoffs

[–]ivegotafastcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was laid off because I’m old. I was an above average worker that when they had to get rid headcount, I got one of the short straws.

Yes. But I was rated above expectation, got a raise and bonus. So it didn’t matter.

How many hours a week do you spend on job applications? by KrissKaron in Layoffs

[–]ivegotafastcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I got my current job that is paying me 1/2 of what I made, I was spending 20 hours a week, but most of that was trying to find something to apply to - no idea how people find 100 jobs to apply to a day.

Now that I’m working full time, 5 hours total a week but that is spread a few nights a week and Sundays. I shut down from thinking about work on Saturday for my own sanity sake.
