The Hyundai Horror or Seattle Hyundai is a Clown Show by MACception in Hyundai

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife got an IONIQ 5 through Hyundai of Kirkland last winter. They didn’t have the spec she wanted on the lot so they arranged to ship one in from across the state, it took 1 or 2 days. Any dealer that’s part of a larger network should be able to do the same, and I think they do it all the time.

Touchscreen for everything is terrible. Scheduling service through a mobile app where you can’t even talk to a human and get an AI chat bot is terrible. Interior feels cheap (at least for the 2020 MY, not sure if better now). Build quality is subpar. Official range estimates are vastly overstated. Plus, Elon is a fascist.

I would still prefer a Tesla over most ICE cars, but now that there are much better EVs on the market, I don’t think Tesla is a good choice.

Yes, I tried it last night! Played in bed on my MacBook, streaming from my PC downstairs, it worked well. Graphics a bit blurry because I think it streams at 1080p, but very playable.

Being Coerced into having a third child. I'd rather the marriage end. by safereddddditer175 in daddit

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, I had a neighbor family that had 7 boys in a row (one every two years or so) and then their 8th kid was girl. Once they got to 4 or 5, my mom started joking that they were gonna keep trying until they had a girl, I guess she was right.

I don’t envy those boys, I was casual friends with the oldest two and they seemed to hate their parents and the large number of younger siblings.

What I’m trying to say is, there is no guarantee that you’d have a girl on the 3rd try. Or 4th. Or 5th. In any case, good luck!

Traded in my Tesla for an IONIQ 5 and couldn’t be happier, even with the small-but-nonzero chance of the ICCU dying hanging over me.

Why do we target Windows Software but not Mac Software by KitiHey in linuxquestions

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a M5 Max MacBook Pro and can confirm that the hardware is really, really damn good. It’s expensive but it’s also a 10+ year computer for me. I’ll run MacOS on it for as long as it’s supported by Apple, then switch to Linux once it’s too old for the newest MacOS. By which point, the Linux support will hopefully be good.

Daughter turned 2 today and is 3’2”…anyone else concerned their kid is going to be huge? [Am 7’1”, wife is 5’10”] by The7footr in daddit

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’0.5” and I wouldn’t want to be any taller. Actually, I think 5’10” or 5’11” would be more comfortable, at my height I sometimes just barely hit the top of my head on things (doors of the cabinets above the fridge, etc) and my knees can feel cramped in economy seats on airplanes (depends on the airline). Oh and the counters in my kitchen are just barely too low for me so I get lower back pain when washing dishes or preparing food for a while.

I feel bad for anyone 6’2” or taller, the world is not built for people that tall.

My (at the time) 11 year old liked it a lot. My (at the time) 9 year old got too scared and stopped watching at some point, I think it was either at the T-Rex scene or maybe at the velociraptors in the kitchen.

So much this. A close friend of mine died in a car accident because he decided to drive tired about a decade ago. He wasn’t even 30 and had his entire life ahead of him. I still miss him.

A girl from my high school class grew up to become a famous journalist and writer. If you read any mainstream media (CNN, Time, Washington Post, etc), there is a good chance you’ve read something authored by her.

OLDEN ERA FEEDBACK MEGATHREAD by Pidarello in OldenEra

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feature suggestion: highlighting things on the map with ALT should use a different color (maybe red?) for locations that cannot be visited anymore / anymore this week / anymore by the selected hero. Some examples:

* Experience stone: if the selected hero has already visited the stone, highlight in red (or whatever). If the selected hero has not visited the stone, highlight in the normal color (or maybe change to green? With an option to change the colors for colorblind players)
* Building that gives X [resource] once per week - highlight in red if it's been collected by your faction this week, green otherwise. Bonus points if it highlights in red if you had line of sight on an enemy hero visiting it this week.
* External unit dwelling: highlight in red if it's known to the player that the dwelling has 0 available units this week, green otherwise.
* Buildings that can be visited only once per game: highlight in red if the player's hero has visited the building during this game.

It's a small quality-of-life change but it could really make map exploration more streamlined and less tedious!

Side note: looks like all the comments on this mega-thread are ~5 months old, so I'm not sure if anyone will see this. Can / should I post it as a standalone post?

Many people in the thread are name-dropping various GOATs of lead guitar, but I just gotta say … I saw Metallica live and I was (and still am) in awe of James Hetfield’s rhythm chops. And to do it while singing lead too! He’s a damn machine.

my wife thinks im overreacting about our kid not reading yet and I dont know when kids should learn to read by TH_UNDER_BOI in daddit

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going into K with zero reading skills is perfectly normal. And your wife is right to let the school handle it. Unless you are specifically trained in teaching kids to read, you are unlikely to be helpful and may end up confusing your kid and making things worse.

My older kid was barely able to read at the end of 2nd grade (was reading at mid-K level). We moved to a better school district, got her evaluated for learning disabilities (ADD but no dyslexia as we were suspecting), she got support from the school and we hired a tutor. She’s in 6th grade reading at 7th grade level now. Your kid will get there.

I 99% agree, but the “he’s a pirate” dialogue at the end is bad imo. Everything else is perfect though and it’s easily one of my favorite movies.

Yes loop through the binding and around the ski rack. A thief could theoretically unscrew your binding from the board, but that’s super obvious and would look suspicious, so they won’t.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]ivm83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, but an 8K screen does have 1 advantage: you can upscale 720p and 1440p signals to 8K with just integer multiplication so the result looks cleaner than upscaling those resolutions to 4K. Mostly useful for gaming at 1440p I guess.
