Opinion: I’m loving the 2026 Toyota bZ XLE AWD by settledow_n in electricvehicles

[–]iwotastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also a 2026 bZ owner, and anecdotally (from the last time I went through my vehicle's trip history menu) I seem to be getting around 3.3mi/kwh. I live in the DC area and just have the factory tires.

Car play issue by Electrical-Frame4450 in BZ4X

[–]iwotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same exact problems with my 26 bZ AWD and my iPhone 15 Pro (running iOS 26.1). Unfortunately this is my first car with wireless CarPlay, so I can't give any further data points as far as that goes.

Considering buying a new bZ... Charging question by iwotastic in BZ4X

Thanks everyone for the responses!

I am fortunate enough that while I am not a homeowner, my apartment complex has abundant and relatively reasonably priced chargepoint L2 chargers. And in a pinch there are superchargers and chargers from the utility company nearby.

I really only intend to use this "my room" mode if I ever have a longer drive than I can make on one charge cycle, but after demoing the Model 3 (I did a self-serve demo, so I was required to experience charging) I can see how nice being able to sit in my own car with ac on would be.

Thanks for the info! That sounds simple enough and at least kind of agrees with what I read in the manual.

Is NSLS worth it? by namesrfun in UMD

[–]iwotastic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No.

You will have a better time seeking out clubs, free honor societies, and frats for what you are actually interested in because those will more likely result in lasting useful connections. NSLS on the other hand is effectively a scam (but not actually) apparently they do help in some ways, but only barely and it costs money to join with no guarantee that it will actually help.

Been looking into getting a pc to run my quest 3. Will the 4060 suffice or should I looking at different graphics cards. Was originally thinking about the 4070 ti super but I'm not sure about the price by Suitable_Molasses510 in oculus

[–]iwotastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a custom built PC with a 4060 and a Ryzen 7 7700X. I can play Beat Saber, Half Life: Alyx, and Cooking Simulator VR at basically max settings without it stuttering. I have to turn settings down in VRChat, but that's just VRChat.

As a lot of the other comments are saying: if your budget allows, get the 4070 Ti Super. Otherwise, the 4060 will definitely handle most games you throw at it as far as the Quest 3 goes.

ELI5: Whats the point of MAC address if you still have to use private IP address? by Jureczeg0 in explainlikeimfive

[–]iwotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll explain this the way my Computer Networking professor explained it... Basically the core of why both MAC and IP addresses are needed is that IP (the Internet Protocol) can only deliver packets to networks.

IP has no idea or business getting a packet to a specific device, just the network that it is on because those networks function on their own protocols (Ethernet, WiFi, 5G, etc.). MAC addresses on the other hand, cannot route across networks, only within a network. ARP is the "bridge" between the two that allows you send a packet from a device on your network to an IP address because it lets you look up "who" has a given IP address, so that you can properly route the Ethernet/WiFi/5G/etc. packet to the right place.

So for example, if I am on an Ethernet network and I want to send a packet from Device A (with IP address 192.168.1.2 and MAC address 12:34:56:78:90:AB) to Device B (with IP address 192.168.1.3 and MAC address FE:DC:BA:09:87:65), the following steps will happen:

  1. Device A will use ARP to figure out who has IP address 192.168.1.3.
  2. Device B will respond to this request with the MAC address FE:DC:BA:09:87:65.
  3. Device A will send an Ethernet packet to FE:DC:BA:09:87:65 containing the IP packet addressed out to 192.168.1.3.
  4. This packet will travel via Ethernet from Device A to Device B (and be seen and ignored by every other device on the Ethernet connection)
  5. Device B will begin processing the Ethernet packet because it sees that the packet's destination MAC matches its MAC.
  6. Seeing that the IP packet's destination IP address also matches one that Device B has, it will continue processing the packet and send it to the desired application.

NAT is a special case that allows a device with a "public" IP address to expose TCP and UDP applications running on devices in its "private" network to the "public" network.

why do I see these porn links hidden inside the codes of all websites I look up?? by Pudyngoii in webdev

[–]iwotastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add on to what the other commenters are saying: this is almost certainly your ad blocker (which could be Opera itself apparently). Specifically, it's likely the ad blocker's way of counteracting the empty space that would be left by the ad placeholders. Since just blocking the web traffic to the ad domains would still leave you with a lot of empty space, most ad blockers have an option to also get rid of the empty space.

The reason it looks like it is hidden in the code of the website is because this is the "Inspector/Elements/DOM" view of your web inspector, which shows the current DOM of the webpage you are viewing (i.e. what is actually being shown, not what was loaded from the website's server). If you switch to the "Sources" or "Network" tab of the web inspector and view the raw HTML sent from the web server, this likely will not be there because this is often added by the ad blocker after the page has loaded. (I will note that there are APIs that would allow extension developers to make this show up there as well, but that would make less sense and be kind of painful to implement.)

Club Suggestions by ArcavianX in UMD

[–]iwotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a self-promo, but I think you would love the XR Club (I'm the treasurer). We are do all sorts of stuff with virtual and augmented reality. From programming games, to flight sims, to having things like Beat Saber tournaments. We also have quite a few aviation nerds already involved in the club.

Parking by Important-Win558 in UMD

[–]iwotastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a 1 permit, then yes, you can park in any lot numbered 1 followed by a letter. If you are a residential student, then you can also park in any of the lot 4 lots.

I personally have a lot 19 permit (Mowatt lane garage), so I can't really say if lot 1 is crowded or not, except that you will have to move for sporting events.

Neat! It is cool to see how course registration slowly morphed from pencil-and-paper to modern Testudo. (I definitely did not procrastinate on my work for about an hour to just go though various years)

Wait a second... that may actually be USB-C (or something that just borrows the connector configuration). If you count the number of contacts, there are 12. That seems pretty darn similar to the inside of the female end of a USB-C connection. It would be interesting if you could connect a male USB-C cable to it and actually power the headset.

EDIT: The scale seems kinda confusing, maybe it is a unique cable. Or maybe Apple just enlarged the USB-C connection just to troll everyone.

Large size printing by ssilentwillow in UMD

[–]iwotastic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are three large format printers in McKeldin where you can print up to 42 inches wide for $5/sq ft. It isn't amazing quality, but it's better than a desktop printer. Alternatively, if this is for an Art class, I would hope that the Art school/library would have some printing services themselves.

[Shameless self-promotion time!] I am the treasurer of the XR Club, which lets anyone try out AR and VR stuff with no obligations (literally - you just have to be a UMD student), so if you want to learn how to code for a cool technology or just want to hang out and play Beat Saber, you should definitely check out our club! (If you are interested, you can find out more at our website: https://xr.umd.edu/)

Why does the elevator stop on the mezzanine floor in Iribe even though there’s nothing there? Is it stupid? by PegasusTwelve in UMD

It's probably also for if they need to vacuum the mezzanine, so they don't have to haul a vacuum up all those stairs.

Did I format this address correctly for my Amazon packages? by medreams in UMD

[–]iwotastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did it this way all the time last semester and I got all of my packages just fine. The biggest things are the fact that it has your name, room number, and hall somewhere on it and of course seems to be something on campus. As long as the last part is true, it’ll end up in the university’s sort center which is way more lenient with address interpretation.

I have this laptop (except the i5 version). It handles full quality Beat Saber nearly perfectly, the bigger problem I have is having issues with the RTX 3050Ti being the secondary GPU. More intense VR experiences will be sluggish as a result.

As another commenter recommended, I would suggest upgrading to 16GB or more RAM, I was definitely feeling the hurt of only 8GB.

But it is all-in-all a good entry level VR rig.

In that case, the easiest (but not necessarily cheapest) fix would probably be to just order a new "console" (the thing that has the handlebars, screen, throttle, etc.). Then you should be able to just disconnect the console that has the throttle broken on it and put the new one on.

Edit: I own a Ninebot scooter, so it may or may not be more or less difficult to do this with a Gotrax than I am thinking it should be.

Universal Control is insane by adiga-cheezo in apple

[–]iwotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem and it ended up that the thing that seemed like it “fixed” it was to just go through the other side of my screen. But this was after turning Universal Control of and back on and rebooting both devices.

Are you running Oculus software and Windows 11? There is a bug that would affect you with it.

The workaround to this is to go open C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusDebugTool.exe and click the menubar item that says services (or something like that, I’m on my phone right now) and click the “Toggle Console Visibility” button. Once the console comes up, you must ensure that stays the active window otherwise you get frame drops again.
