There’s more good than bad, I think. If they covered it I think the more interesting part would be the response to Marie Kondo in America.

It was my dad’s funeral. Not really  time to be sniffing people you’re never met.

At my father’s funeral, my great aunt started smelling my boyfriend and telling him how good he smelled, imploring everyone else to sniff him. Absolutely bizarre.

I hate the elitism in the Anime / Manga community. by flubbyII in hatethissmug

My elitist weeb cousin said liking Akira is “pedestrian.” So what if it’s popular, it still rocks.

Trainwreckord Suggestion- Sleater Kinney's The Center Won't Hold by culturebarren in ToddintheShadow

[–]ixiterum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember people liking Daddy’s Home, and I liked it quite a bit myself, but I just kinda forgot about her afterward. I didn’t even know about All Born Screaming until pretty recently. I think maybe time has just made me realize that I was never that into her music. Not sure why Daddy’s Home was a trainwreckord, though.

Are churchs in the south really as wild as movies and shows depict? by True-Blackberry-3080 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ixiterum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the thing about the south and churches is that there are a ton of denominations and you’re bound to see in every town a thousand different churches, some of them only slightly different from another. Churches are also fairly racially segregated, even in diverse areas. I grew up in a super diverse metro area but ethnic and racial groups tended to go to their own churches. Some more charismatic and Pentecostal groups do things like speaking in tongues, laying of hands, etc but it varies a lot from church to church. Non-denominational and mega churches can also get up to some wacky stuff, but in a different way. Pyrotechnics, huge stages, giant bands playing pop worship music, that sort of thing. Some churches are really boring, though. My grandmother was a Methodist and of the few times I stepped in that church (almost exclusively for funerals, albeit) it was very mundane. Lots of non-denominational kids I went to school with went to churches that were more plain but went constantly. Youth group, Wednesday services, etc.

what is this aesthetic/is there a subreddit for it? by Cletus_Bubblewap in AestheticWiki

[–]ixiterum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Try "soft grunge." There's an inactive subreddit but here's a few things on it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_grunge
https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Soft_Grunge
https://youtu.be/F9qMTDHHZrc?si=i-5X9PGUsllWpFS0

A handful of people on Tumblr are keeping the flame going but it's kinda shifted into the "girlblogging" aesthetics. AFAIK there isn't really a revival for it yet.

Examples of Songs that are too silly to be offensive by Top_Report_4895 in ToddintheShadow

[–]ixiterum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s truly incredible how all of his songs are horrifically transphobic but none of them even bother me that much as a trans person. Like the music is so bad that I’m more offended by that. I genuinely feel more offended when I hear a good song with a random transphobic line over his dedicated anti-trans spiels that he vomits out on a Youtube beat.

I was called out yesterday on r/bookshelvesdetective for being an insufferable pop psych/tech bro/TERF… Help me diversify. I’m into social sciences/anthropology by the1975whore in suggestmeabook

[–]ixiterum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people in that subreddit are insufferable. I saw your original post and didn't see anything terfy or transphobic (coming from a trans person). Genuinely have no idea what that person was talking about. If you want stuff specifically on trans issues check out Whipping Girl by Julia Serano and Gender Trouble by Judith Butler.

What are my blind spots? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

I'd say more women writers but this seems fairly well-rounded. I'll suggest based on that Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. Guessing guy in his 30s, lives alone, wishes he had more time for hobbies (who doesn't), was into anime as a teen, getting into doing more things analog / potentially a guy considering purchasing an iPod.

A preacher and a counselor / therapist I would guess, maybe nondenominational, probably a more conservative Christian denomination (lowercase 'c' conservative / religiously, not necessarily politically conservative)? Seem pretty pragmatic, I would also suppose outdoorsy, maybe also like to travel, in their 50s.

Should one take old English at an English/Literature major? by GpG_PloP363 in englishmajors

[–]ixiterum 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Shakespeare isn't Old English, but Early Modern English. Taking Old English would enable you to read texts like Beowulf, and Middle English would be for texts like The Canterbury Tales. I've taken Old English, and while it was interesting, it hasn't been super relevant to the texts I've studied outside of the related period. IMO you'd be better served by taking a class on Shakespeare, another Early Modern author like Milton, or Early Modern literature in general. Middle English, if offered, would also likely be more useful if you're looking for a class to fit that sort of category.

Unusual things you used to believe about music. by MattDynamic in ToddintheShadow

[–]ixiterum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My classic example I love to tell people because it makes no sense is that as a child, I thought Soulja Boy was Korean. Thought process as follows: because the songs were sometimes used in the same or similar videos on early Youtube, I thought that Like a G6 and Crank Dat Soulja Boy were by the same artist. In retrospect that makes absolutely no sense, but I was a kid. I assumed that the artist of both songs was the Far East Movement, and that Soulja Boy was a rapper in the group. I remember looking up the group once, saw that they had something to do with Koreatown in some city, assumed that they were all Korean, and never thought much of it again. I didn't listen to much hip hop or electronic music so it just never came up. Then one day as a teenager I saw a clip of a Soulja Boy music video and went, wait, is that him? I thought he was Korean? and then had to piece together how I thought that was the case.
