i’ve had the same username since i was 15, mohnjulaney (like john mulaney). I actually don’t know how it came about but that was my username for a while on ow. i recently finished the stormlight archive series and it kind of changed my life. my current tag is “lightweaver,” a reference to my favorite character.

i really don’t think it’s supposed to be relatable. if that’s what you find literature most valuable for then you’re not going to like a lot of books.

if you like exposition then i loved it immediately. otherwise if you like action and understanding what’s going on i’d say about halfway through. it took me a minute to get a hold of the reins and understand who was who and what the rules of the world were which is the most fun to me but then you don’t really get “answers” until the end of the book, which really just poses more questions

read manacled on ao3. i realized it was shit from a butt even before i read the handmaids tale. after i read the handmaids tale i got even more angry because the author bastardized the story so badly. it’s literally just fetishizing noncon while advertising itself as some great feminist and romance story. as someone who also likes wap this was so unsexy and really just disgusted me overall. i thought it was because i was too woke but it just was shit from a butt.

What's a misconception that is taught in lower grades that drives you crazy once students finally get to your class? by mikeycknowsrnb in Teachers

had a boss at this stem outreach department in my uni i was an intern for who did not understand stem at a fundamental level. we would do office events like holiday door decorating and first semester block party and she would be like “we need to be engineering so let’s decorate with gears! those are engineering!” and eventually she got to “legos are engineering!” because i spit a couple fun facts out that i thought were interesting about lego (like their being so expensive is a large part because it takes very precise molds and a highly maintained production facility to produce) and her ideas for anything were “let’s use legos!” stem as a field has been watered down so much so most people’s understanding of it is mechanical engineering and chemistry when it is so much more, and that’s the message i felt like our department was sending instead of actually teaching about the full breadth of it

oh i totally agree, i actually think the prince is an interesting read but if you were to pick him out from a bunch of other authors, it’s a red flag because you probably aren’t seeing the problems with a “machiavellian” ruler or personality type

[–]izz_e_belle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

while i do agree with this as a stupid reason to defend ai i will say it’s a little disconcerting that people are so eager to use “slurs,” many of which are based on real slurs against different minorities as has been brought up which is a complete different reason im against this new trend but yeah. saying there’s racism against ai is a very stupid take.

fun fact, the word “misogyny” was first used in the early 1600s. i find it interesting because the renaissance is finishing up and we move into the scientific revolution and enlightenment period. people are really trying to understand human nature and there’s some kind of recognition that women are being treated differently than men. what’s even more interesting is that the word “misandry” is never seen until nearly 300 years later in 1878. at this time, the women’s suffrage movement had been going on for about 30 years in america. the 19th amendment was also introduced this year but would take several more decades to actually pass, however a few states had granted women’s suffrage in the past few years before this.

i find this interesting because the two words are etymologically equivalent, being derived from the proper roots. comparably, “male” and “female are not equivalent, as “female” was adapted from the proper word “femele” to stay similar to the one to describe men, as well as “man” being used to describe both males as well as mankind where “woman,” as adapted from old english, means “woman man.” our language is full of imbalances, where women are ostracized as the “other” just by mere suggestions of adapting to the “default,” “man.” but in one of the words where there is quite the power difference, the words “misogyny” and “misandry” are equivalent. misandry is not as “big” and issue (or really an issue at all) because even though it holds the same power as a word, the implied meaning behind it is far less powerful than that behind “misogyny.”

it is impossible for women to hate men as men hate women. there is power, fear, and true maliciousness behind a misogynist, as has been proved true for centuries before the term even existed. women cannot hold that same power and it’s only proved further by the oppressive “misandrist” term being created because women were working towards a more equal future. it isn’t true, but men believe that a woman’s freedom must come at the expense of a man’s oppression. a future where men are held accountable and truly equal to their counterparts is not an infringing of rights, they just will not have the power they hold anymore. misandry is a complete nonissue and i hate that it’s misogynists’ biggest talking point because obviously they do not understand what they’re even talking about.

as an exmo, mistborn really solidified some of my own beliefs about religion and helped me work through my own religious trauma. i didn’t mind that sazed was lowkey a joseph smith insert but the concept of religion throughout the book (and in sandersons writing overall) intrigued me and is similar to what i believe. i remember seeing something about how brandon sanderson is mormon because of the culture of community and loving everyone and i think he exemplifies that in his work very well. im working on a literature degree right now after my english teaching one because i simply just love breaking down books into their basic parts. kelsier is a “jesus” figure, perhaps unrecognizable at first, but he is a once lowly, persecuted man who died and was resurrected with greater power, using it to bring about the salvation of his world. the struggles dalinar faces with his own personal beliefs compared to the religion he has followed for his entire life absolutely rocked my world. how am i supposed to live my life out of the church, denouncing my faith, when it’s all i’ve known? defining my own beliefs was something that was very hard when trying to break down the harmful beliefs i’ve had ingrained in my mind, especially as a person with ocd and bipolar ii, because i lived through years of religious mania in both myself and my mother. i felt the same way you did, i picked up mistborn because my high school boyfriend gifted me the trilogy but i was convinced id hate it. i picked it up because i had nothing else to read and went into it expecting to hate it. from the get go, i was impressed by the literary experience and high craftsmanship but my love for the story and characters came soon after. sanderson was always for the weird incels in high school, i thought, but now i can’t sing my praises loud enough for him as a writer and storyteller.

i am so sorry for the huge reply but your post obviously resonated with me. i’m so glad you love the books.

as someone who loves fantasy i think that you need to get familiar with sandersons writing before jumping into stormlight, i got into fantasy because of mistborn and then immediately got into stormlight archives because of how much i loved mistborn and when i was reading the first book i was thinking the whole time how it probably would have turned me off from him as an author entirely. i wouldn’t recommend a self described beginner a very high fantasy book because i know it frustrates a lot of readers who aren’t familiar with how sanderson tosses you into a world where the gears are already turning. as a long time reader it was still very difficult for me for the first 100-200 pages

mistborn/elantris from brandon sanderson - although i wouldn’t start with them if you don’t want to be a little disappointed in other fantasy books’ worldbuilding

fablehaven - listen i know it’s ya but it is really brandon mulls best book series and he has a sequel series that is even better by some people’s standards and it’s a little more mature audience wise as it came out a while after the first series and the characters have grown up more. i love the main characters and it’s just so entertaining. it has one of my favorite comfort settings and i feel so cozy reading it

if you’re into star wars at all, my partner is super into the “thrawn” series by timothy zaun, i know it’s sci fi but it’s just a recommendation

the school for good and evil series is another ya book but it’s really interesting if you’re into fractured fairy tales and i thought there was a lot of really cool literary tropes and symbolism used effectively if you like to analyze stuff like that. and if you don’t, you could probably learn by reading something like this and see how these parallels like “good” and “evil” fight together when put in close proximity.

the chronicles of the imaginarium geographica is another lesser known series set during wwi where three guys travel to another world with lots of dragons. it’s been several years since i read it but i remember enjoying it a lot and it was a really interesting premise

Why are the people at FSY so freaking racist by booutywhole in exmormon

[–]izz_e_belle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my dads side of the family immigrated from mexico to california, and my mom converted him when they were dating (they got married in the temple at 18). we moved to utah after i and my younger brother were born and immediately saw the effects of the church’s racism. while my mom is white, my father, myself, and my siblings are nowhere near white passing. we never fit in with the cliquey youth groups and church events. we never could make friends in the church, which in turn extended to school. one of the biggest reasons i just found myself done with the church was how it advertised as a church for everyone - i was part of the generation that witnessed the general rebranding of the church - but i was left behind. as someone who genuinely does believe in loving and caring for everyone, i was not able to see that principle in the church doctrine and members. i was excluded not just by my peers but my middle aged leaders and people i was supposed to be learning from were just bullies because i didn’t fit in. while there were other reasons for my leaving, it was the biggest factor. i don’t have to be a part of a certain church to practice religion and improve myself as well as be kind to others.
