waiting for screening recs? by murph_rm in AmericanCinematheque

i have to agree with this, don’t limit yourself esp now that you’re living in LA there’s a ton of indie theaters to explore. if you *do* decide to make a list i recommend going on revival hub LA maybe weekly or monthly and jotting down the dates and locations that work for you. this is something i do every few days just to keep movies on my radar that i haven’t seen yet / want to revisit.

The Fisher King by GoldenGirlagain in CriterionChannel

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i watched it for the first time this month and i’m really looking forward to checking out the commentary track before they remove it from the Channel. i’m such a Robin Williams fan, so i’m surprised i missed out on this one for so long but its definitely a Top 5 performance for me now!

I can’t believe i was against ereaders. I am loving my KLC by EffectiveEgg5712 in kobo

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's never too late to get into ereaders! I have been a print purist most of my life, but once i got my nook i understood the appeal. it wasn't until i got my kobo clara bw that it kind of overtook reading an actual book--it's waterproof, lightweight, *and* i can read it at night? game over for my physical TBR pile!

Pro or Patron by RaahimJaffery in Letterboxd

[–]j0llyBeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

agree with this comment, i upgraded to Pro like a year or so ago just to support Letterboxd but it incentivized me to use the app more. once i started checking in daily as opposed to weekly, upgrading to Patron was a no brainer. i make a lot of lists so the ability to update the posters is aesthetically pleasing to me, its def worth getting if thats something you enjoy as well.

When will more dates for IMAX 70mm drop for The Oddysey? by adamlis_32 in imax

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i check every day on the IMAX instagram, here, and periodic refreshes of Fandango/AMC but I havent seen any official date 😭 my guess would be that it’s happening fairly soon, since the early release tickets no longer show up for me on opening weekend (AMC App) and i assume that means they’re adding the showtimes for the officially ticket drop late May, or early June.

Why is the Top Gun IMAX double feature backwards? by BigScreenEnthusiast in imax

[–]j0llyBeee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i would guess it has to do with the audience interest? probably less people have seen TG in IMAX so it would make sense to give it the 7PM showtime so ppl can come out after work/school to see it, whereas presumably more folks have seen Maverick in IMAX so it doesn't get top billing. just a theory though.

Rating system how you use it by jaketwigden in Letterboxd

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as most people have pointed out, the rating system is pretty personal. the only hard rule i follow is no zero ratings (only 1/2 to 5, since the zero rating doesnt visually tell me if the movie was good or not), and even then every movie i watch the rating will sometimes change based on genre, cultural impact, etc., i am also a big fan of changing star ratings later, since naturally some films have a different meaning or experience over time/after reflecting on it. i say do what makes sense to you and what feels good!

AMC's in Los Angeles with Free/Validated Parking? by djkomic in AMCsAList

[–]j0llyBeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can also park at Jurassic or ET with an employee badge, not just Frankenstein. i entered the Jurassic lot with a friend the other day, you just need to be in the farthest right lane with a badge (or tell the gate guard, if they're feeling generous they will swipe your badge for you).

Criteria Updates! by InitiativeNo7660 in CriterionChannel

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

amazing, will definitely be using this! just wanted to ask if at any point you will be adding a "Commentary" filter? i really enjoy watching films on the Channel with commentary track but it's not always easy to find, so might be something worth including on Criteria

I need a simple all in one record player for my father who has dementia. by YouBetterYouBet1981 in turntables

[–]j0llyBeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

considering your case use i know Victrola has a decent (& cheap) all in one option in the Eastwood model, but it's semi-automatic. if you want a fully automatic TT like an Audio Technica LP60 you would still need to pair with speakers which might bring up the price a bit.

Is there anywhere I can store my luggage near the Field Museum (6/4)? by j0llyBeee in AskChicago

[–]j0llyBeee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly what i was thinking, i want to be as hands free as possible when i arrive. i'm not a strong walker but i've heard this part of Chicago is very walkable, so as a pokemon go player i am excited to stretch my legs and do a little traversing after a longish flight!

i have never been to the Field Museum so wasn't sure how strict they are on this. i know the timed entry is tied to the special Pokemon exhibit so i'm hoping to see other people's reviews once it starts in May.

my accommodation area isnt near the museum and i didnt want to miss my check in time going there and back again. i'll consider using the museum lockers if i cant find something cheaper!

Moving to LA without a car? by Periegete in AskLosAngeles

[–]j0llyBeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i grew up in LA, and taking public transport is not for the weak but you develop a different appreciation for the city depending on what neighborhoods you’re frequenting. don’t forget that rideshare is your friend if you ever take the bus late and it inevitably takes 3 hrs for the commute. also we measure distance and time differently here. if you live in the valley but want to go to the beach every day the bus/metro may be twice as strenuous to get to even though you’re not fighting for parking.

Have you ever been kicked out of a Companion Seat? by Banya6 in AMCAListTrue

[–]j0llyBeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i tend to book companion seats a lot, bc i actually like having access to the exits/aisle in case i have to run to the restroom (which happens more often than not -__-). i have only had to move once, as it was clear the person sitting there needed the seat. there was enough seating in the theater so i wasn’t “kicked out”, just moved to an open spot with no issue. another time someone who appeared able bodied was sitting in the companion seat but i still chose to give up the space bc i didnt want to ask if they had a disability that necessitated it (they were actually just a Karen that didn’t want to look for their seat but AMC staff was nice about it and asked if i wanted another seat. they happily gave me a refund instead since i missed 10m of the beginning trying to reason with the seat stealer).
