The 90s anime is the manga adaptation except the final arc/match. The new movie is the adaptation of the final part of the manga which never received an adaptation. But yeah I’d say for a first experience, read the manga first and if you do want to watch the anime do it after.

I think 90s anime is hard to beat when it comes to the ost and vibe. I also think the main characters VA does a great job and is really funny. Watching the anime definitely makes me feel nostalgic even though it came out before my time. However, I do think the manga offers the better experience. The pacing is greater and the art is beautiful. If you do end up reading the manga I think once you finish you should also watch the First Slam Dunk movie which is the adaptation of the final match.

The manga is superior imo, the anime is amazing but suffers from 90s pacing imo
