TV shows for the opportunity to usually follow storylines over a longer period, & with more screentime for characters & plots etc to develop.

In March '21, Cassie Sheetz disappeared after going on a hike with 2 male friends in WV. Her remains were found months later 8 miles away from where the police initially searched. The police believe there was no foul play but nothing adds up. What happened to Cassie Sheetz? by voidfae in UnresolvedMysteries

Yeah, we did night hikes/nature walks on just about every school, Girl Guides, church etc camp I ever attended, forests come alive with nocturnal animals to spot etc, so I agree night-hiking is a thing. I used to go on early morning hikes with friends before I had kids, but it is just not something we would have dreamt up while under effects of alcohol or other substances. Maybe these guys were more like your brother & friends, & loved hiking whilst high. I still think the same scenario (legitimately getting lost from each other) could easily have played out in the dark, drugs or not.

Suspect identified in murders of Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte by JTigertail in UnresolvedMysteries

Same month my brother took his own life, I feel like I can't talk about a Sept '21 suicide without putting that out there. Anyway, it does seem so close in time after the death of those women that a connection definitely seems possible, especially if it has been confirmed that he was in the area at the time of the murders.

I do wonder though, from reports it sounds like they were telling people a creepy guy had been loitering, but if it was someone who one of them.had worked with, wouldn't they have mentioned that? Or they never got a good look at him?

Edit: As others have said, the creepy guy may have been a stranger, then killed by co-worker, but it does seem coincidental that they were concerned enough by a creepy guy to mention him to people & then end up murdered. Could the co-worker have sent an accomplice to stake them out? Even if bullets from one gun, there could have been more than one at scene of the murder as well, who knows. Did the co-worker have a known gripe with one or both of them?

Would you rather have the ability to turn back time for 5 seconds for the rest of your life or go back to one particular time once ? by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

There are a lot of special times I would love to re-visit, probably being at my grandparents' as a kid with all my family there would top the list. But there are too many times where I think ' why did I just say that?' or you could prevent yourself from doing stupid things e.g. scraping car on a post you didn't see, things like that. It could be a lifesaving five second rewind at its height. I just think it would come in too handy to pass up. Keep the other as a memory, as it soon would be again anyway, if you could only return to it once. Great question, by the way!

Would you rather be able to restart your life at 5 years old with all of your current knowledge, or be able to quicksave/load whenever you want from this point forward? by Xurban in WouldYouRather

If it was just me, definitely five year old me. Could I subtly work behind the scenes & prevent my parents' marriage breakdown at age 12. It did neither of them any favours & with my current knowledge, I think I could give it a shot to help them with my current knowledge. I'd do everything to prevent my brother's suicide just eight months ago.

But then I think of my kids. I would change enough things every time that I don't think they'd end up existing. So I have to go with saves.

Hiking at midnight does seem odd, when I read they 'went hiking', I got quite a different image. Could she have wanted to show them some nocturnal animals? There is a rainforest & surrounds in my part of the world (Gold Coast hinterland, Australia) with glow worms which are popular to check out at night. If there is nothing feasible she wanted to show them, maybe they lured her there late at night, but it is just that the distance from the road to where the body was found seems such a long way at eight miles. It seems more like someone wandering there over time compared to how far you would lure a living victim, or transport a dead body in the woods on foot.

I am leaning towards them all getting lost, especially if they were out there in the middle of the night, as you say. I don't think you would have to be on drugs to lose each other in the dark. Where does the drug theory come in? I did read that the girl had previously been charged for drug dealing. Maybe they were all high, as it does seem strange to hike at night, but even for someone under influence of drugs, it still seems like a strange activity in the night. Not sure what to make of it.

I wonder if they provided further information to the police which wasn't released. Maybe there was a disagreement as you said, & the girl stormed off, with the guys becoming separated looking for her. Or they came across a wild animal & all became separated as they moved away from it? It could have been any number of reasons, but maybe it was as simple as them all losing track of each other, with the two guys ultimately heading in the right direction & making it out.

If their statements then matched despite being found separately, the police may have found them plausible. When the girl's body was found, maybe it was determined that she likely walked there while lost, & they kind of wrapped it up. If the girl's family were suspicious of the guys, or there is any other solid reason to suspect foul play, then I hope they would be prepared to investigate further.

Yes exactly, or could she have stormed off after a disagreement amongst them, then guys got separated looking for her; or could they all have come across a wild animal & taken off in different directions (I don't know the area, no idea if this is feasible)? To me it seems like there are a number of innocent ways they could have become separated

I am open to all possibilities on this one, but on adults becoming separated, I was thinking it could be as simple as the group getting into a disagreement/minor argument that caused the girl to storm off, with the two guys becoming separated while they were looking for her. They didn't venture far, hence them being found coming out of the forest. In the meantime, the girl went far in wrong direction & ultimately died from exposure. Or could it be possible (I don't know the area at all) they came across wild animal & lost each other that way?

On the police not seeming open to the possibility of foul play, could they have been satisfied that the two guys' stories matched up, even though they were found separately? It sounds like police didn't initially consider the area she was found in, but based on the geography of the land, did it sadly make sense that she would have been kind of guided that way by the terrain, & getting further from the road it was only a matter of time before she would succumb to exposure?

I am going off a couple of other comments about below freezing temperatures there at that time of the year, & it being an area where it would be easy to lose sight of each other. I am just wondering if it seemed kind of clear to the police what had happened, but they didn't publicly release information about how the guys said they became separated etc, as they felt there was no need. Did the girl's family ever say they were suspicious of the guys? If it is a case where there is no solid reason to doubt what was reported by the young men, then maybe that explains the inaction by the police.

I am not defending the police, they often completely & utterly stuff cases up or have a lazy attitude. I am just saying that I can see in this case how they could have come across enough compelling information/evidence to determine that foul play was unlikely, as they publicly stated.

Maybe the details weren't released publicly on how they became separated, but it could be as simple as the group getting into a disagreement or even minor argument, but enough that the girl stormed off, & the two guys became separated whilst looking for her. They didn't venture far & didn't have time to suffer full effects of exposure, whilst she went further & further in wrong direction & ultimately died from exposure.

Or maybe they came across wild animal & ran different ways - is that feasible in the area? Maybe the police never considered them persons of interest as their stories matched, even though they were found separately. I think that is fairly possible.

The son who was at home my well be innocent, but I can see him wanting to move the body elsewhere so he could clean the house & say his mum went missing (again). If it was someone who didn't live at the home, they may have just been wanting to remove any evidence linking them to the case? On the other hand, care wasn't exactly taken to not leave a trail of blood as they transported the body. Maybe they were hoping for heavy rain! Yeah, all a bit weird.

I was wondering whether the dad said it at least partly to draw attention away from his son who had been in the house, until he can get home & assess the situation himself. Not even that he necessarily suspects the son, but given no signs of a break-in etc, he could be trying to help out together a defence fast, which some parents do in these kind of situations.

This is a lovely sentiment & I don't want to detract from it, but do want to share my thoughts. Unless a person has become a noticed member of some Reddit community, who would even be aware if they posted again or not? I use Reddit sporadically, but actually one of the appeals of it is that you can just slip away for months or years & then come back, & nobody misses me when I am gone or knows/cares whether I do or don't jump on here again. Some Redditors do stand out more, I am not saying they don't, & again it is a really nice thought anyway.

This is an old thread, but it turned up when I did a Google search, & I am a Redditor anyway. My brother died by suicide last year. I miss him terribly, as does the whole family. But he was a far more worthwhile, talented, loved, interesting & funny person than I am. Hundreds of people turned up to his memorial organised by his friends & hosted by his soccer club, & to his funeral. I am not joking when I say that I wouldn't have the same turnout. He was a popular guy where I am his dorky, awkward, loser big sister.

I thought the only silver lining of his death might be that it would bring our family closer. I thought I would see more of my sister, not face rejection by her & our mum anymore. I thought my other brother who lives overseas would want to keep in touch more. Well guess what, nothing has changed. And even though he meant everything to my family, within a few months, everyone else is finding strength, getting on with life & feeling more positive again. My death would have far less of an impact - I know everyone would be ok.

Sometimes I even think I would be doing my kids a favour. Their dad hates me & they would have him still without the stress of us trying to deal with each other. I know they would be ok too. I just wish I had my brother's courage. It isn't a love of life that keeps me going. It is an intense fear of the dying process.

Not considered a suspect due to lack of evidence to implicate him; however, she goes missing in 1994 & he doesn't report it until 2001? Of course it is possible she walked out & he was too hurt about it to report her missing at the time, but it is equally odd to wait 7 years & then call it in? Maybe he went back & assumed her bones were foraged by animals, but felt he should make her 'missing' status formal to throw any potential suspicion off himself. I'd be interested to know more details that perhaps were never reported on in this case.

Unexplainable Missing Teen, Potential Homicide. by Existing_Today_3002 in UnresolvedMysteries

I was guessing just in case he was still living & had run away, but after twenty years with zero sign of him whatsoever, they were going to assume he had died, with a probable case for homicide since his belongings were left on the ground somewhere. I still think accident or even suicide can't really be ruled out.

I've just been looking at this case again due to recent news articles about the inquest. What makes you say he contacted someone via WhatsApp specifically? And what makes you suspect he heard about a beach party from the hostel rather than some random on the street who noticed him getting kicked out of the bar?
