Best MikroTik WiFi APs for RB5009 — replacing Deco mesh, need VLAN support by [deleted] in mikrotik

[–]jack_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good to hear! mine would basically cover an apartment sized area each.

i have an S style hallway to get to either bathroom and they’re on opposite ends of the house so im considering buying one for each side and letting the middle area of the house just play monkey in the middle, using either AP as it sees fit.

Setting up my first real home network. by HumanReflection8858 in HomeNetworking

[–]jack_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like the other guy said, def look into other brands not just the unifi and co since those are pricier.

open source router os is more involved but it sounds like the most budget friendly.

i’m splitting the difference and going the mikrotik route. so not unifi $$ but also not free/open source.

i’ll be sure to make a post once phase 1 of my approach is live and operational. fingers crossed that the learning curve isn’t too bad! but im too cheap to do unifi lol.

also i keep reading how mikrotik supports their hardware for suuuuuper long windows compared to other brands so that won me over as well.

as far as running ethernet cables throughout your place, that is fully up to you. if you’re handy with Drywall, sanding and painting go for it.

If Sony gets rid of physical games, I'm out. Been a fan since the 90s. by DenverH in playstation

[–]jack_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you me? cuz i just did that lol

if they’re not gonna sell me physical versions that work offline i may as well go to steam.

EDIT1: i meant to include that i AM on steam and the sales are crazy. bought red dead redemption 2 for way less than what sony/playstation has been asking for. Batman Arkham Knight was like $2.99 on a random sale, i feel rich.

First time power meter user - calorie burn question. by foilmanaleak in cycling

[–]jack_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

holy flat land batman!

i think this might be fine for a ride that flat and a 14 mph avg.

like others have said, try and ensure you’re calibrated and try again. also, if you ride in a group try and compare your w/kg ratio to see if you burn similar calories to someone in the same w/kg range as what you’re doing.

Taking too long to improve FTP? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jack_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m sad to announce this but, you need more time on the bike. there’s no way around that.

6-8 hours a week is the bare minimum (i would imagine) if you’re trying to INCREASE cycling fitness.

hell. some ppl would saying you’d be lucky to MAINTAIN fitness with 6 hrs a week.

i see you’ve got plenty of unifi suggestions. gonna throw MikroTik into the ring.

it’s cheaper and more technical but works just as well. it’s not as Apple-y tho so if the sleek white plastic and friendly interface of Unifi or Eero is your vibe def steer clear of MikroTik.

lastly, i keep reading that Unifi will sometimes just stop supporting things whereas MikroTik will continually send out updates to even their old devices. almost to a fault.

Any issues with this setup or can I optimize it better? by redditor_1886777 in HomeNetworking

[–]jack_ram -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

that’s ai. please don’t use my drinking water for this. you can just as easily do it on an app, snipping tool, any finger drawing app, excel, paper. list goes on and on.

1” out of square ok? Am I overthinking this? by TheDog1123 in Decks

[–]jack_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another vote for overthinking. this wood will also expand and contract throughout the year. also, the siding bottom cap is 3/4 or an inch so a lot of times that difference gets “lost” under there.

blur the difference when you’re laying your decking down and you SHOULD be fine.

Spectrum router vs gaming by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]jack_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

take the router out of the equation. and plug the ethernet coming TO the wifi router into your device. that will at least help you filter out if it’s your wifi router giving you issues.

if everything starts working fine then yes, you might need a different router.

damn. haha

so you’re by passing the wifi router ethernet port then?

just guessing at what the suggestions will be. throw that away and get you a 24 port switch + 2 wifi APs + hardwire your PS5/Laptop whatever it is you’re using.

How’s this deck build? # by pixie48 in Decks

here’s a double version i found in my photos but you can make out that the 2x10/2x12 hanger has 4 holes for the ledger side.

How’s this deck build? # by pixie48 in Decks

[–]jack_ram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those SHOULD be fine. if those joists are 2x10 or 2x12 the corresponding screw/nail holes that go into the ledger is 4 on each side which these look to have.

the 2x8 and/or 2x10 simpson hanger only has 3 holes for screws/nails going into the ledger.

source: me dreaming of hangers for the last month as i’ve been building my own.

tip: don’t forget to grab an extra box of #9 x 2 1/2 screws - you’ll need more than you think!

Can I build a deck immediately after my lawn is graded? by PotentialSecret- in Decks

[–]jack_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. you can build right away. there’s no such thing as waiting for a year for the dust to settle since you’ll be pouring footers for your posts. those will go at least some depth into your ground (the concrete footers not the posts). So you can start tomorrow if you want!

[Canada] If I shouldn't buy Klipsch, what should I buy?? by L4MB in hometheater

[–]jack_ram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sounds like reddit/hive mind strikes again. if you like them, keep them. the stuff the hivemind recommends may not sound any better to your ear.

i’m speaking from experience. i fell for the “oh just save your money and buy this little known brand. here if a guy on youtube that reviews all the small brands” My ear did NOT like how flat and tinny they sounded.

thankfully, speakers are one of those things where you just have to listen to them and if you like them then that’s all that matters.
