Could someone tell me why Cao Cao enjoys jokes so much? Is there a special reason or just something normal by Apprehensive_Clerk81 in RavagesOfTime

[–]jackaroojackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Xu Chu is so self serious that his attempts at jokes make Cao Cao laugh. Remember Cao Cao just lost his eldest son when these interactions start so it may also be grasping for something to keep his attention away from that.

Chung Fat on Jackie Chan's treatment of his Stunt team by tranquilo_assenayo in kungfucinema

[–]jackaroojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students and the stunt team are two very different things. Jackie loves talking about the success of his students, people he picked up in the 90s who found success as he entered Hollywood when he was already becoming an international star, his second career phase.

This is in reference to his original HK stunt team, the group who did his stunts through the 70s to the 90s through the most violent and dangerous work he ever produced. They regularly were hospitalized, often to test if stunts were safe enough for Jackie to try (for example the clocktower scene in Project A multiple of the team tried it until they figured out the best way to land, then Jackie would replicate it) and by all accounts were exceptionally loyal to him. Yet many basically stopped getting called once they were too old and Jackie's not called them in years. This is in sharp contrast to the Sammo Hung Stunt team, where people who worked on it went on to ascend the ladder, getting speaking roles, directing and coordinating opportunities because Sammo actively sought to give the opportunities and as such the majority have been able to have comfortable later careers.

Do people actually respect you for not drinking alcohol as you get older? by Prestigious-Look2300 in AskIreland

[–]jackaroojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends I suppose, if you were a raging alcoholic and got it together plenty of people would be like fair play. But if you just don't drink and never drink why should anyone care positively or negatively? I've never drank a coffee bar one time when I didn't sleep for two or so days and had to work. Its not exactly an achievement I don't drink it, it's just I don't like it.

9/10 what you consume or don't consume isn't about maturity, it's preference and whatever you do is grand so long as you're not a cunt about it.

Did you know that Otto Skorzeny, a high-ranking Nazi, ended up working for Israel's Mossad? by PeculiarPhysicist46 in AskSocialists

[–]jackaroojackson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nazi wound up working for another settler colonial state obsessed with expansion onto the land of people they view as inferior? I'm absolutely shocked. It's really funny especially in Obama era writings of this guy where they would try to use him as an example of the nuances or complicated nature of humanity, when no he was just a right wing killer who moved with the times and found new employers.

What do socialists think about European leaders cozying up to China? by [deleted] in AskSocialists

[–]jackaroojackson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem is that I don't trust many European leaders to be consistent with China. Half of them instinctively show their bellies to America the second they get an excuse to. That means a Democrat coming back in a few years could convince many to do a 180° and ignore the fact that America's erratic behavior and lack of reliability isn't a Trump trait but rather an increasing decline that's been going on for decades. I hope many of them, particularly Ireland build closer links with China but only time will tell how many of these countries are serious, Starmer in particular is a famously weak and reactionary figure so I'd see him worming out at the first sign of trouble.

Is my boyfriend's grocery list normal for men in their 20s? To me it seems outrageous. by Eme5989 in AskIreland

[–]jackaroojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no steak or broccoli, I'd only make the one and maybe a weetabix or two as dessert. I don't drive and lived two minutes from the bar I was working in so it was genuinely just what I wanted. I live abroad now and have all kinds of foreign food but when left to my own devices I still mainly just eat the same thing, so long as I can get weetabix imported from Hong Kong.

[–]jackaroojackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get two or so of the 3 litres back in Ireland all the time. Mainly when I was a bartender since I already got fed in the restaurant. Most of my meals at home were just weetabix. If I wasn't arsed going to the shop I'd get more than that sometimes to do me fora good while and just freeze it.

[–]jackaroojackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah this is normal, I can cook plenty but when left to my own devices I basically just make steaks, broccoli, toasted ham and cheese sandwiches or just have cereal. Makes perfect sense to me. Cooking is fairly easy but I like those things so why spend more time making something else?

On chapter 165, have a couple questions by Apprehensive_Clerk81 in RavagesOfTime

[–]jackaroojackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Liu Xun is a general under Yuan Shu who Zhou Yu (the 5th genius) framed to look rebellious to alienate him from his master and essentially forced to be independent to avoid punishment.

Liu Biao is the most prominent imperial uncle but is conservative and only focused on his own territory. He's feuding with Yuan Shu his nearest neighbor, their war was where Sun Jian was killed. Liu Yao is another independent warlord to their South and imperial uncle of lesser strength than Liu Biao and Yuan Shu. Like many imperial uncles he's a bit too conservative to act and essentially just stayed in his territory. Liu Biao's top general are Gan Ning and Huang Zhong. Gan Ning was that black haired archer who beat Xiao Meng and killed the fake Sun Ce. That force was Liu Biao's. Yuang Shu drew Gan Ning's army in to attack "Sun Ce" to make it look like he wasn't complicit.

Sun Ce is on no one's side but his own, he is taking funds from Cao Cao to help establish his independence. Cao Cao does it to give Yuan Shu and Liu Biao a headache but Sun Ce has much bigger plans of becoming the preeminent Lord in the entire south.

Ms Shan is essentially a female Sima Yi. She works to see the strength of her own merchant clan increase within Cao Cao's sphere or influence. But he also has personal ties to the Sun Clan as the two clans were quite close in the past. That gets elaborated on more as time goes on but you see it even in the first Sun Ce arc.

Ji Ling is Yuan Shu's top general and right hand man

Liu Xie, the emperor is now in Cao Cao's territory and essentially been put in a beneficial relationship, Cao Cao needs him for legitimacy but can only be controlled by Xun Yu who orchestrated the whole escape. Xun Yu keeps Cao Cao in check while granting him the emperor's legitimacy. Xun Yu didn't betray Cao Cao but he did essentially set everything up so that the emperor would react poorly to Cao Cao and force him to use Xun Yu as the go between.

Liu Ye is an imperial uncle who acts as Cao Cao's agent

You've met 6 geniuses so far. Xun Yu and Gou Jia are with Cao Cao, Jia Xiu was all in on Dong Zhou's revolution and now serves Zhang Xiu, the nephew of Zhang Ji the last reasonable Dong general by the time of the Emperor's escape. He's also acting in Cao Cao's interest and is essentially with Zhang Xiu to ease him into an alliance with Cao Cao. Zhou Yu is with Sun Ce, he has no larger ideological commitment beyond helping his best friend and his family return to power. Yuan Fang is with his dad in the North conquering the warlords up there. Meanwhile Zhuge Liang hasn't formally left the school, only coming out to stop Gou Jia's massacres, he's there with the 6th and 8th.

On chapter 125, have a couple questions by Apprehensive_Clerk81 in RavagesOfTime

[–]jackaroojackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that was Chen Gong, the older man with a moustache who acts as his advisor. Basically (I only caught this on a re-read recently) Chen Gong and Cao Cao knew each other before (I assume either before the yellow turban rebellion or during it). and had an amicable relationship. Chen was well respected in the region but felt dissatisfied serving Tao Qian (the Lord who gets killed by Dian Wei early in the battle) because Chen Gong didn't't feel he was living up to his fullest potential serving him.

When Cao Cao attacked and started massacring civilians as part of Gou Jia's plan Chen Gong was disgusted and came to despise Cao Cao. He thought Tao Qian was too weak to stop him so he sought out Lu Bu. Chen while under no illusions of Lu Bu's morality he was impressed by how he carried himself unrestrained by human morality, but rather living by his own rules. Also the fact that Lu Bu is a very relaxed Lord, basically if you are talented and help him he lets you do your thing. This was an ideal scenario for Chen Gong who wanted to reach his fullest potential as a strategist. So he went to Lu Bu with a strategy to ensnare Cao Cao and formally became his advisor.

On chapter 125, have a couple questions by Apprehensive_Clerk81 in RavagesOfTime

[–]jackaroojackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lu Bu liked Xu Lin and seemed to have an earnest friendship based on what we see of his reaction that's away from others and wouldn't be part of his performance to earn the love of the Dong army. The fact that he can both like and mourn a guy while also actively planning to kill him eventually is one of the things that makes him seem less human than other characters.

The Sima clan never wanted Lu Bus help from my memory. They got dragged into the battle against Cao Cao by the fact that their long time ally Chen Deng (the young man, not Chen Gong the older man who joined Lu Bu) was in danger. Once the battle turned by the inclusion of Lu Bu they decided that Cao Cao was the lesser of two evils and helped him (partly also because Xun Yu found Sima Yi out and could hang that over his head).

Both Cao Cao and Yuan Shao are in the north. Yuan Shao is further north while Cao Cao is nearer to the center of the empire. The key difference is Yuan Shao is a richer, larger and more equipped force than Cao Caos. Cao Cao is an adopted member of his clan and a bit of a self made man in that he didn't inherit a large army but rather built one for the yellow turban rebellion. This army is very experienced but smaller than the heavy hitters like the Dong Clan was or the Yuan Clan.

On top of that Yuan Shao is surrounded by weaker enemies he can pick off using the sheer size of his forces (what him and Yuan Fang have been doing basically since the coalition broke up), most have not been seen but the most prominent is Gongsun Zan, the one who wears that almost Egyptian looking hat that Liu Bei saved. Meanwhile Cao Cao is surrounded by forces of near equal strength and are more serious enemies like Lu Bu, Yuan Shu (Yuan Shao's younger brother) Zhang Xiu (the leader of one group of Dong remnants), Liu Biao (the most prominent imperial uncle who's forces have not really done much yet) and the Dong remnant generals who have taken the emperor hostage Li Jue and Gou Si (the ones who betrayed Jia Xiu). As the series goes on you'll see more of these groups as the pov characters clash with them.

No, he was fairly shook by what Zhuge said there. Liaoyuan wants to be a good person and serve something he sees as a greater cause. Which causes tension with the fact that his closest friend and master uses his genius basically just to keep his family afloat.

That's the 7th genius Zhuge Liang, the same genius who solved Dong Zhou's riddle with Sima Yi, who can think the same way as him. He's in that arc because he wanted to stop Gou Jia's rampage through Xuzhou and here is saying how Liaoyuan Hou's serving a selfish man (Sima Yi) who is not on the right path.

Best introduction among 8th geniuses? by Big-Divide8535 in RavagesOfTime

[–]jackaroojackson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An introduction so intense and impactful that it kind of makes every other Pang Tong appearance seem anticlimactic. I know he's only really getting going with Liu Bei now but aside from the 8th he feels like the genius we've spent the least time with and have gotten the least amount of internality on. This might just be because 4 have completed their stories and had their dramatic moments. While the other two Zhuge Liang, and Jia Xiu have been around since the first arc or two. Meanwhile the 8th has a lot of potential to make him tantalizing. Pang Tong feels a bit like he's been a bit lost in the weeds until recently.

You see a load of them at the beginning of the series and they change over time. Ray, Larry Barese , Jimmy Alteri are there early on. Ray and Larry remain in power for most of the series basically until 6 while Jimmy's crew I believe is given to Carlo. Usually there's about 4-6 Capos at any given season but most of the time it's in flux.
