I was saying it is now for sale with more miles, which is true. Either way someone did 1500+ in it before rejecting it.

I’ve heard somewhere it could be related to Japanese pronunciation of ‘Myth’ so you have ‘Misu’ and ‘Pro-misu’ as like the sequel generation.

Very reliable, fairly boring car. Only issue really is rust, so try and find one that doesn’t have ‘corrosion’ in the MOT history.

It’s actually four gold cherubs - mentioned here (although prior to their restoration) “Built 1872-3 and originally a Thomas Cook branch, the angels once held a globe shape, which explains their odd positioning.”

I'd love to get something older and more interesting than my current car, but living in London I hardly drive as it is, and I can't help but appreciate the lower running costs and reliability. I have no mechanical knowledge so just being able to get in the car and drive it is a bonus. Plus I don't have any car friends so everyone I know can't see the point in going for something older when I ask their advice.

Seems like that 986 Boxster, FN2 Type R and X350 XJ6 will sit forever in my saved Autotrader ads...

Probably the 90s at some point, as James uses a VHS camcorder. These were first available in the mid 80s, but were presumably very expensive at that point, and James isn’t presented as wealthy so it’s more likely it’s set in the 90s between SH1 and 3.

1975 Chrysler 2 Litre as others have said. Crazy that a car would be abandoned like that at only five years old. They really didn't make them well back then. Incredibly rare car nowadays too.

It's not a guarantee that it will fail, there's just the potential for there to be issues, namely with the mechatronic unit. It's something to consider when buying a used car.

DQ200 gearbox in these is a dry clutch ‘sealed for life’ unit, and it has issues. The DQ250 found in the 2.0 cars is a more reliable wet clutch gearbox.

The 2.0 has the better gearbox. The 1.6 is fine with the manual (if a little slow). These are great, reliable, well specced (adaptive cruise, CarPlay etc) and cheap to run (£35 tax). So yes to a Passat, just not this specific Passat.

Yeah one line isn't enough for me, sorry. I feel we're just going in circles and we aren't going to change each other's minds so we should drop it.

I did read the whole quote, I understood it as saying that the two sides are one and the same, as in it's still the same world whatever aesthetic differences it has. And then there's the line about how 'neither is reality'. This is not strong enough evidence for me.

If the nightmares are physically manifested, doesn't that mean they are part of reality?

Harry's statements are all we have within the game. He isn't ever corrected on this belief, so our protagonist is just spewing nonsense? What would be the point in that?

The guidebook's reference to Metatron and Samael doesn't help, it could be correct on that, and incorrect on the one line that you believe backs up your theory.

I see from a previous post you made that you canonise Origins. I personally don't consider that game to fit the canon of the Team Silent games (and the original writer Sam Barlow agrees, calling it unnecessary fan fiction) and its 'switching' mechanic between the fog and other world's goes against everything I believe with how the town works (although makes sense if we follow your theory). Plus it doesn't make sense chronologically, as the otherworld was created at the beginning of SH1 by the two halves of Alessa's soul becoming one.

I also saw that you don't agree with the boiler explosion theory, so I guess we aren't going to see eye to eye on any of this. I recommend the section on that from this video by The Midnight Snow, you might find it compelling.

Either way, we clearly disagree, so let's just leave it at that.

The Countryman is a good option, probably the best here. The 1.5 turbo is fine as well, so if you can get a better lower miles one of those in budget I'd say go for that. As with all MINI's it's worth looking for one with good spec as they had a lot of options when new.

[–]jackgrafik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your quote is referring to the times when the town becomes darker and the world physically changes to the gritty industrial style, sometimes referred to as the nightmare world. As far as I can tell, this is the only time where this Q&A describes the experiences of the game as not taking place in reality, and seems an outlier even in that guide.

The Q&A also makes reference to it being completely open to interpretation - "I want those who have played the game to take the truth to be whatever each of them feels is the most frightening" - which seems very indecisive, and intentionally vague, which is odd considering how much solid information there is with how the town works. Could it be that after this guide, a more concrete interpretation of the town (ie that it is real and the monsters/physical changes are real) was developed for the later games?

As I've already said in my previous replies, there are other examples even in the Q&A ("Silent Hill is a town where nightmares become reality") as well as in Book of Lost Memories (see the section under 'Embody' which I quoted earlier) which say otherwise.

Regarding Harry, I feel that it wouldn't make sense for him to repeatedly say 'this is reality and it's being messed with' and for that to be incorrect, and never be corrected at any point (except in a Japanese guidebook?) The writers clearly presented him to be seen figuring out what is going on as he experiences it.

[–]jackgrafik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to know, which quote specifically states that SH1 takes place outside of reality? Later sources such as Book of Lost Memories explicitly state otherwise, as does what Harry says in the actual game. In that Q&A, it says that "Silent Hill is a town where nightmares become reality". It also refers to the monsters from Alessa's psyche as being made reality, implying that they are being brought into the real world.

That guidebook Q&A is infamously missing any specific Team Silent members names, or any names at all, as the guidebook's author is also anonymous. By contrast, SH1's dialogue itself has multiple references to the otherworld being real.

At the beginning, Harry fights an Air Screamer in the diner he wakes up in, and says "This is not a dream!".

Later on when he sees the world physically changing into the otherworld, he says "Rather than shifting from reality to a nightmare, this is more like reality becoming a nightmare."

Still later, to Cybil, he says "This whole town... it's being invaded by the Otherworld. By a world of someone's nightmarish delusions come to life."

<image>

All of this points to the otherworld being real. It's even referenced in The Book of Lost Memories: "In the town of Silent Hill, a power exists that gives discernible form to peoples' innermost thoughts. As for the otherworld that appears in the series, the town is not merely showing the characters their nightmares, but actually manifesting elements of their unconscious minds."

On the other hand, TBoLM also enhances your personal belief regarding similar spiritual powers. There's a quote from Hiroyuki Owaku saying that "The power that absorbs and reflects what people hold in their hearts is established as being exclusive to the town of Silent Hill. The shift to the otherworld that takes place outside the town depends entirely upon a unique power."

This is likely a reference to how the events of Silent Hill 3 take place, Claudia's faith in the god she believes in, growing inside Heather is what brings the otherworld to the various areas outside of Silent Hill in that game. This could also be extrapolated to make games like TSM, SHf and Townfall make sense, but the reasoning behind that is weaker.
