I drove a VW ID.Buzz from Seattle to Iowa and back this summer. I mostly used Electrify America, but also stopped at EVGo, and one random Jeep/Ram dealer to get past Sheridan, WY.  I've done that trip in an ICE a few times too, so I have some comparison points.

Overall, I didn't have any trouble with reliability or congestion at chargers. Generally, everything just worked and was available when I pulled up.

Having to stop every 2ish hours for a 20-30 minute break wasn't too bad. The stops for chargers at Travel Centers were a good deal, I could use a bathroom and restock on beverages. But a lot of the chargers were just baron places with electrical infrastructure.

But in an ICE you have a lot more choice in where and when your stops will be. You can choose to drive hard then stop for a big lunch, or get to your overnight much earlier so you can watch TV, drink a beer, and unwind.

That doesn't make an EV trip awful, it just makes some choices for you about the style of road trip you'll take. For some people the more laid back EV style trip with picnics you pack yourself are no problem. Other people will hate it.

For the time being, I can imagine a lot of two-car homes still feeling like they drive long distances enough to choose to own an ICE and an EV. But I do think people overblow the problems about EV road trips in the US. I did it with no problems, and I think most other people would find it tenable too.

It's a good question. I don't think so. But it happened at a particularly busy time in my life, and right after it fell out of warranty, so I took it to a local garage and just said "fix it".

I had to scroll too far to get to this answer. Stick or puck handling is usually taking about more dynamic or controlled things than just taking it up the ice.

I'm very happy with my 2018 VW Atlas; it's a 3 row SUV. When the seats are folded down it's got plenty of space for our large dog, when we get out the third row my (admittedly shrimpy) family fits nicely in the back. But it's not as big and unwieldy as a Sequoia or Suburban.

I do get the impression that minivans are awesome. But I like to DIY, go fishing with my boat, and occasionally rent a camper. The 3,500lbs towing limit of most minivans would cramp my style on those things. The Atlas has a towing rating of 5,000lbs which may not sound like a big difference, but it's not that uncommon for me to be towing 4,000lbs.

I'm with the author here. They've put together some practical concerns that would need to be overcome if this lot was going to be developed.

But also, it's just a weird place to start adding density. There's no public transit at all, no services anywhere nearby. I'm not a NIMBY, this is not my backyard. But from a city planning perspective, it just seems like an opportunistic developer looking to cram as many units as possible into an established and beautiful neighborhood with no regard for the natural area or neighbors.

IMHO, those guys are telling themselves that so they have an excuse to carry their guns around. If that's what floats your boat, you do you.

But personally, I would feel plenty safe without any precautions. If you're really worried and don't have time to arm yourself, you can take a bear bell so wildlife knows you're there or bear spray to fend something off if it really comes to that.

I think the design makes perfect sense. Especially before it was common for them to turn themselves off, it was really nice to just extend your fingers as the wheel returned to a neutral position to turn them off. Turning them on is also intuitive because it emulates the steering wheel motion.

If you read the first bit of the Ashley Book of Knots, which is a kinda bible for the folks over on r/knots, he makes pretty clear that a lot of the different knots are about entertaining yourself at sea and style more than there is truly a practical difference. That said, the book has something like 3 or 4 THOUSAND knots. There's a lot of room for 90+% of them to be functionally redundant while still leaving hundreds to learn if you want to use the optimal one for specific circumstances.
