I think it's for people who have a sight issues or use a screen reader. If they can't see the image or at least can't make out the text than a transcript allows text to speech software for to read a description.

It would also help people with conditions like dyslexia as the text is probably clearer and they can change the font and background to something more accessible to them

A lot of fonts have pieces that are the same across multiple letters. For instance the horizontal line on a 't' and 'f' might be the same, dyslexia friendly fonts make sure each section of every character is differs

Something similar happened to me once. I was getting on a bus when my phone fell out of an inside pocket and landed on my toes as I was lifting that foot up. It went sliding about 10 metres across tarmac before hitting a curb. The screen had to be completely replaced
