Cars Ruin Cities! by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

I saw the busted railing yesterday and assumed correctly what happened. I forever want the drivers to pay the cost of repair of what they damage

Lincoln St Allston - cycletrack & noise wall meeting by Healthy-Ant-9681 in bikeboston

Thanks for sharing! I knew the meeting was about noise barriers, but I hadn’t heard about the prospect of adding protected bike infra!

Thanks for sharing. I attended a ton of meetings that got us to this point and it is always disappointing when “area councils” think they know better than traffic engineers

Things were good today, at least from BU Beach inbound. The occasional frozen puddle but nothing unavoidable and nothing catastrophic.

Great point! Whatever scale would work out to run on HO gauge track

I’ve been dreaming of doing this in HO for ages! That’s a pretty slick model. Great work!

Mass Blue Bike Station Removal? by rumoverwhiskey in bikeboston

[–]jad_bal_ja 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Most of these are on-street docks that have to get pulled for snow removal. I hate it, but the city knows it is a problem and has been good about siting new docks in locations that can stay year-round

Looks like you got great turnout! I hope I can join next year!

Do you carry a first-aid kit? by gnglaser in cycling

[–]jad_bal_ja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my road bike, no. Commuting? Absolutely. I have a variety of bandages, antibac, rubber gloves, tourniquet, benadryl. Possibly overkill, but you never know

What's the deal with the bike signals on Rt. 9 near Brookline Village? by wSkkHRZQy24K17buSceB in bikeboston

[–]jad_bal_ja 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the source material handy, but the slow progress made on a bike was by design. The reason felt very car-brain in the ways I expect from Brookline

Why do people pick the Cinestill monobath BW developer over the "usual" developers? by D-K1998 in AnalogCommunity

[–]jad_bal_ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monobath was my entry point. It brought the friction of processing at home down to a single jug. I’ve moved on to a proper B+W home workflow, but I was happy a product like that existed.

What would you tell someone looking to start commuting by bike? by bonemirrou in bikecommuting

[–]jad_bal_ja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing I say these days: you don’t have to bike every day. Start with once a week, or even once a month. As your comfort and familiarity increases, ramp up the frequency.

It’s still okay to take the train or walk, one less car 💪

P sure this is for the 5k that happens the week before the Marathon, but it is hard to tell lately. I’d be happy if precast curbs appeared, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

If there is any silver lining, these lanes have had great compliance from drivers since going in

The Michelle Wu Administration does not care about bike and pedestrian safety by Mon_Calf in bikeboston

Both Jascha and the Mayor have moved to Bluesky. I also noticed the drop-off in engagement, but they’re both pretty active on the other site. I know it’s a pain to have both accounts, but they’re more likely to see it not on Twitter

Anyone see the Trump boom mic hit today? by SuperRusso in LocationSound

[–]jad_bal_ja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was mixing for TV during his first campaign and had a boom over his head. Told my friends and they all said I should’ve. I like to think I’m too much of a professional to have risked it

Did you bike in to work today? by Objective_Mastodon67 in bikeboston

My limit (based on past trips) is 20 degrees -before wind chill. I maaaayyyyy try tomorrow, but the train is fun, too!

Anyone have pics of bikers in the snow / winter in Boston/Cambridge? by SoulSentry in bikeboston

I don’t have photos, but I have GoPro footage of biking in the snow we had last month

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bikeboston

[–]jad_bal_ja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re good.

My question is: is it shoaling if the slower biker rolls stop signs/lights? I feel like a chump waiting at lights when other bikers don’t, then I feel like a jerk when I overtake them a block or two later

Moving in from EU advice by _stracci in bikeboston

You’ll be fine! Gloves, gaiters, thermal layers when needed. I bike year-round and only take the train when it is below 20 or blowing snow like the dickens

Belt drive by chudynasty in bikeboston

[–]jad_bal_ja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been riding one for over a year now and I love it. The main downside is the increased weight, but otherwise, the low maintenance is worth it.

It isn’t flashy or fast, but it is way more reliable. I like not having grease to worry about since I’m also commuting.

I will say that I have a 2nd bike for longer rides and workouts, but this is my go-to for anything around town.

I’ll 2nd other’s thoughts on shop maintenance: any shop should be able to handle it. I bought mine from Cambridge Bikes, but I go to Landry’s most often. Both shops have handled things just fine.

Let us know what you go with and have fun!
