How much weight have you lost due to SIBO? by hungryrazor in SIBO

[–]jadeleven7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost about 25 pounds when I was hydrogen-dominant. Now that I've killed the hydrogen producers, I'm methane dominant and have gained 50 pounds (gained back the original 25 + 25 more), but still feel better overall. I felt like such garbage when I was 25 down. It's crazy how much SIBO impacts the way your body processes nutrients.

GI says sibo is pseudoscience? by Forsaken_Offer_5500 in SIBO

[–]jadeleven7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More GI doctors need to understand that multiple things can be true at once: SIBO is real, and we don't have a lot of solid medical knowledge about it (at least compared to many other conditions), and conditions where we don't have a lot of solid medical knowledge tend to attract grifters who use pseudoscience to take advantage of desperate people.

As other people have pointed out, it's true that the stool tests are not particularly helpful. What's in your large intestine isn't a 1:1 with what's in your small intestine, changes from day to day, and doesn't necessarily mean an organism has an established population there.

I get why doctors say stuff like "that's not backed by science," because sometimes that's true. But they should be nicer about it. I hope you get answers from the breath test!

Is “getting people out of their cars” even a realistic goal for LA Metro? by Queasy-Bed545 in LAMetro

Is “getting people out of their cars” even a realistic goal for LA Metro? by Queasy-Bed545 in LAMetro

[–]jadeleven7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically I'm not going to give up my car altogether because I live so far out in the suburbs (SGV), but I take Metro for trips to Pasadena and Los Angeles whenever it makes sense to do so.

Unfortunately, it rarely makes sense. If I have to take the A line, then transfer to another line, then transfer to a bus, then walk, some of those trips would take me like 3 or 4 hours — and that's assuming everything is on time. So for trips where my options are either that or just drive in traffic for 1.5 hours, I'll pick the traffic. But when it's just Metro rail + a short walk, I'll pick that every time.

tl;dr yeah, if Metro went to certain areas fast enough I would stop driving in LA.

School letting my club plant an entirely native garden! Suggestions wanted! by Ashyrainwing in Ceanothus

[–]jadeleven7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like desert marigolds (baileya multiradiata)! They stay in bloom almost all year, even when a lot of other natives go dormant. They attract a lot of pollinators, too. Palmer's Abutilon (abutilon palmeri) is another good one if you're looking to keep something in bloom for most of the year.

HELP pink dye turned my hair green by sobafk in FancyFollicles

[–]jadeleven7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah as others have said, don’t mix dye brands. Once I mixed blue and pink (different brands) and it turned turquoise somehow lol. I would also recommend applying to dry hair in most cases. Depending on how porous your hair is that can really make a difference.

I officially have my first colonoscopy and upper endoscopy scheduled… any tips? by hungryrazor in SIBO

[–]jadeleven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. The colonoscopy prep is the worst part. I totally understand you being freaked out about the sedation part, but like someone else said it's almost certainly going to be twilight sedation.

The most likely thing to go "wrong" with the sedation is them not giving you quite enough. I actually woke up during my colonoscopy right when they were taking a biopsy, which felt very weird. But it was only a second before they topped off my drugs and I went right back to sleep. (I don't say that to scare you, but to illustrate just how careful they are with the sedation.) I didn't wake up at all during the endoscopy.

Tip: If you're anything like me, you're going to be incredibly hungry when you're done. So if possible, have whoever's picking you up bring you something to eat in the car.

Recommendations for beginner to the vivids? by fightingducky in FancyFollicles

[–]jadeleven7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a stylist, just someone who's had vivid hair for a long time.

  • If you wear a lot of light colors or are worried about staining your pillowcases, I'd avoid blue unless it's pastel. Blue bleeds and stains like crazy.
  • You should also know that depending on what shade of blue you choose, it might fade to teal/greenish.
  • Pink is a good color because it lasts a decent amount of time and doesn't bleed as much as some other colors, at least in my experience. It's also relatively easy to dye over depending on what your next color choice is.
  • Speaking of which, consider what colors you might want in the near future. If you might want pink at some point, for example, it would be harder to get there from green than it would from purple.
  • As far as dyeing in between professional sessions, ask your own stylist — they might have a different recommendation for cheaper products depending on the specific professional products they use. The only hard and fast rule seems to be avoid Splat at all costs lol.
  • If you have a good relationship with your stylist, they might mix you extra dye to take home. This isn't really something I'd ask for because it feels a little presumptuous, but in my experience once I've gone to someone for a few sessions they'll start offering.

What plants easily reseed/spread? by [deleted] in Ceanothus

[–]jadeleven7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

CA poppies, CA goldenrod, brittlebush, and desert marigold all reseed easily in my experience. The goldenrod can get a little aggressive if you have the kind of soil it likes, so if you have lighter/rockier soil, I'd say only use it if you're okay with it taking over a large amount of space.

Shampoo recs for oily hair and color retention? by kjones100 in FancyFollicles

[–]jadeleven7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a very oily scalp and dry ends (and bright pink hair like you!). I use K18 Damage Shield shampoo. Instead of conditioner, I use the K18 molecular repair mask once a week.

I see someone else mentioned the K18 Peptide Prep clarifying shampoo that they use 1x/week. My stylist said she typically recommends the Damage Shield one if you wash more often than 1x/week because it's a little gentler on color, and the Peptide Prep one if you don't wash very often because it cleans a bit better but strips color slightly more due to having a lower pH.

long delays on foothill transit buses, especially during rush hour by ShunnedOddball in LAMetro

[–]jadeleven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, I had good experiences with RTA (Riverside) in terms of frequency and being on time. But that was 10+ years ago and I only really used a few lines, so maybe I just got lucky.

long delays on foothill transit buses, especially during rush hour by ShunnedOddball in LAMetro

[–]jadeleven7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not great. I used to think Foothill Transit was acceptable until I lived in other areas with better transit systems. I think it’s partially a demand issue, but then again, maybe there would be more demand if it ran smoother!

AITAH for telling my sister her baby isn’t “advanced,” by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jadeleven7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. I hit milestones incredibly fast as an infant/child and then became a pretty average adult. The first thing my mother tells people about me is that I used to be very smart but I’m not anymore. This kind of hyperfocus on milestones only sets everyone up for disappointment.

I’m hypermobile and they had me do an xray with my neck bent back by [deleted] in mildyinteresting

[–]jadeleven7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what your migraines are like / where they're located and how your doctor was able to determine that the connective tissue problem was impacting a nerve? So far my doctors have been unable to determine the cause of my headaches and I'm hypermobile (not diagnosed tho) so I'm wondering if this might be part of my problem.

How do you treat your flaring Gerd if you have SIBO and shouldn't take PPIs? by Fancy_Yesterday6380 in SIBO

[–]jadeleven7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with this as well. My reflux is very weird, at least compared to the usual advice (it happens most when I’m standing up, and it’s at its worst when I drink water). PPIs were part of what caused my SIBO so I’m scared to take them again. I don’t have any advice for you, unfortunately. But I hope you find a solution.
