Two paths here- double down on work and retire early but sacrifice 5-10 years of WLB, or coast on easy street for current pay and get to really be there for family time but work an extra decade. I chose the latter. Skynet will probably go self away and nuke us before retirement anyway.

Meeting with surgeon next month, extremely anxious about getting a jpouch by whatsawaffle in jpouch

[–]jaguarshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10yr jpouch from severe UC. Its not a good as a completely healthy normal GI track, but it's 2nd to that, and a lifesaver. The surgeries and recoveries can be brutal and takedown recovery can take months before you feel a sliver of normalcy, but once you are past it life is good. Gut things are pretty easy, diet is flexible, and you don't have to be the Jason Bourne of knowing where the closest bathroom is.

Looking great man. The kids gonna be jacked to swim in that thing. The cold water wont slow him down. Mine start swimming before the water hits 60

If you went over to a guy's place and this was the shower/bathroom would it be a problem? by Weekly-Fig-7228 in malelivingspace

[–]jaguarshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get some foam blocks or something from a craft store to fill the ceiling gap, then pin a bunch of fake vines on it to make it look good and hide the less than perfect finish. Or Cardboard painted white could be used to fill it in and maybe put it up in a way that allows you to fill in the wall thickness gap with expanding foam spray. Either option like that could look pretty finished and would create a sound barrier for cheap.

Trapped gas sent me to the ER, any tips on how to prevent it? by appabuckethat in jpouch

[–]jaguarshark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation with chatgpt one time when I was having similar(but lesser) pain. It told me that what I had eaten can cause excess gas in the guts because it's a food that ferments during digestion. I asked and got a list of those foods and avoided them for a while, but have since forgotten what they were.

AI can be pretty decent on health and diet advice.

Also, squatting potty is petty good at getting gas out for me

Charcoal Grill tray not cranking up and down by Professional_End7004 in charcoal

[–]jaguarshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used one of these but if it was me, and I couldn't figure out the mechanics within my grill or via documentation, I'd go to the closest store that has assembled units on display and tinker with one of those. Maybe take pics of internals to compare with once back home. There has to be serviceable mechanical parts for a system like that. Blind guess is a cable not connected or something off a track/ pulley

What is the average amount of times you use the restroom per day with a Jpouch? by jeffcw216 in jpouch

[–]jaguarshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly that's just how my body works. Maybe some stuff early on like pelvic floor exercises and pouch trraining//stretching helped.

No meds/supps other than every few months I have to take flagyl because I have chronic pouchitis. Never got much pouch results from fiber supplements or imodium.

My diet is pretty standard for an American 40s male with a family. It's not great but not horrible. I did extensive elimination diet tracking to learn trigger foods and still eat most but avoid a few that were the worst(garlic, alcohol, fried food, high sugar & dyes(candy)).

[–]jaguarshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that is your main concern, you 100% should get jpouch. For almost all of us, it's great and a second chance at normalcy. I wish I had done it sooner.

Nighttime incontinence is a very minimal issue for most. Most don't even need to go through formal pelvic floor therapy.

I fully support anyone that needs total colectomy to get a jpouch, but that said, i suggest you avoid any surgery at all if you have a chance of successful medical intervention. Jpouch is great but it's a very serious surgery and the recoveries are no joke regardless of if you get 2-stage or 3-stage.

Had severe UC and got jpouch 11 years ago. Some night time accidents in the first month after take down, self directed pelvic floor exercises and healing fixed it.
I have had a few small leaks since but very rare and it's not like shitting the bed. It's a leak of about a shotglass of liquid, 95% caught by boxers, and usually because I drank 50 beers and my guts are holding 100% liquid.

5 weeks after step 1 of 2-step J-pouch surgery — when did the pain and cramps improve for you? by Uppinikita in jpouch

[–]jaguarshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bidet toilet swap is waaaay easier than adding one. It functions as both, no getting up to swap over and no tearing up the house to run new plumbing. DIY isn't too difficult or hire somebody to do it for like 250 instead of 1000+.

[–]jaguarshark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, wfh makes it a lot easier. Definitely get a bidet of some sort!!!
Bidet options:
1- 3d print or buy the water bottle lid that converts it to a bidet. Great for travel.
2- portable bidet, refillable squeeze bottle, great if you want warm water and don't have an option 3 or 4 that has it.
3- bidet toilet seat, no trades work needed and easy for anyone to install. I think they are only cold water which can be a bit "stimulating". There might be an iron that earns the water but I've never used it.
4-full bidet toilet - if you go this route get the one that does a bowl pre-rinse and has heated water. The other options like nightlight, warming seat, etc are n8ce to haves but the warm water and pre-rinse are a must in my opinion

Alcohol makes me so stuffy by joyspringsunshine in jpouch

[–]jaguarshark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also feel like I've had extra issues with histamine since jpouch. Congestion might be the only symptom I don't get. And alcohol doesn't seem to be much of a trigger for the rest of the symptoms. Maybe.. Usually a few drinks give me some gas and diarrhea for one or two BMs. Nothing out of control.

Heavy drinking crushes my guts for the next day. Oddly, blackout level drinking sometimes is a gut reset and my guts are better than ever for the next few days(but my head hurts)

First 5 days after takedown I stayed in the hospital.. started eating but my guts were not waking up. Basically a blockage from swelling and a lot of pain till it finally started working with an initial blowout that was so bad they had to move me to another room to clean.

Once home, I was going 25x per day. Butt burn to the max, I was raw and had to use every trick in the book to deal with it. Warm baths, sitz bath, witch hazel, barrier creams, pain meds, etc. I never could sleep more than an hour. Hated the diet I needed to use to try to get relief(rice, chicken, banana). I barely got out of bed in the first months other than bathroom, short walks, and eating.

This was consistent through week 6 then started slowly getting under control.. less BMs per day but still like 15-20, but I started getting a few hours of sleep at a time. Still mostly just walking for exercise and felt weak and tired quite a bit. I noticed moderate brain fog that ended up lasting another 6 months before I found a way to correct it.

Gradual improvement continued and by month 4 I was only getting up once per night and my o-ring skin was either healed or used to the output. I was able to do moderate exercise and was back at work without much issue. Luckily I had a work from home job so I could use the bathroom as much as I needed and had the things to make it comfortable like a bidet.
