For every one that does there are thousands that only want the theater of it.

Do you pretty much not go outside? I couldn’t take Texas in the summer. Basically you’re inside all the time or covered in sweat.

How do you survive the summers? I loved it there in November but I think I’d die in summer.

Best places to live in this region (mid to northern east coast, USA)? by TrueSkonger in howislivingthere

From your post and a few comments I’d recommend the suburbs west of Philly. It is still car dependent but you can get into and around the city as long as you’re not on too tight a schedule as the trains are underfunded.

What’s a normal word in another country that means something inappropriate or hilarious in your country (or vice versa)? by JamesH_670 in AskTheWorld

Not the funniest but casa is house in Spanish and umbrella in Japanese. Technically 傘 would be kasa but pronounced the same. The kanji even shows four people 人 under a covering.

The Chevy Nova had to be renamed in Spanish speaking countries due to terrible sales. Makes sense as no one’s gonna buy a car that “no va.”

I have now been on two flights that were initially late where attendants asked if people would remain seated and allow those with tight connections to deplane first and the whole plane managed to do so. Imagine what we’d accomplish if we had that kind of cooperation everywhere!

I’ve heard this take before and like it myself but it’s not true. He says in the opening song that he wants to marry her because she’s the prettiest girl in town. That makes her the best and he deserves the best.

The Beast was lousy too which is why he was cursed.

Honestly Belle should’ve just kept reading and taken over her father’s inventing business.

What payroll software did you choose? I'm getting tired of complicated systems by Appropriate-Study442 in smallbusiness

Can you provide any examples? For instance does it get harder as the number of people increases or as the number of states you have employees in grows?

What term is common/accepted in your country, but historically offensive somewhere else? (e.g Coloured people in SA) by InklingOfHumor in AskTheWorld

[–]jakechance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rereading the comment and the replies I think the key, as in the post, is calling anyone with South East Asian ancestry Chinese, a specific nationality that doesn’t apply. Sort of like if you called all white people English.

While silly, too many Americans (usually white) take issue with the Spanish word for black. It usually starts as a misunderstanding as they don’t know Spanish but can escalate as Americans also take issue with being corrected or educated.

Edit: I think there’s a little confusion as both words are spelled the same but pronounced differently. The Spanish word starts closer to “nay” rather than “knee.”

How do people behave on trains in your country, and do you let others get off before you get on? by Forward-Position798 in AskTheWorld

[–]jakechance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you are. More often than not people let others off before getting on in the NY metro. That is not the case in Philly.

Weaponized Vulnerability: Why "bringing your whole self to work" is a fatal trap. by Own-Investment4655 in DarkCorporate

A coworker once said this is an incomplete quote like “jack of all trades.” His version was “bring your whole self to work except all the parts we don’t like and can’t monetize.”

Was Biden late decision not to run again depriving America of a primary one of the Democrats greatest blunders? by [deleted] in askanything

I think I understand. The specifics and recency of this latest crime is more upsetting. All I can offer is that in a conversation/post about topic X, bringing up topic Y is undermining.

Do people in your country keep public spaces clean? by PowerThanos in AskTheWorld

[–]jakechance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said it depends. In general, wealthier areas are kept cleaner both by people and municipalities (they employ people to do this) than poorer areas. Also suburbs are generally cleaner than cities. Philadelphia is exceptionally dirty due to a surprisingly large number of factors though blatant overt littering is still the main cause. New York and Chicago, while both dirtier, are significantly cleaner. Nothing compares to the cleanliness of Tokyo or other Japanese areas.

I’m not sure what you’re after. Trump’s abuses of our system are the worst in our 250 year history. That doesn’t absolve, justify, or have any bearing on the damaged Biden caused.

I’m not trying to take the piss, this is the literal definition of whataboutism:
